Re: Best Girls All Time Team in SE Ohio

1975/76 Adena. Led by the great Cindy Noble, also Ruth Ann Ater and Mary Beth Speakman. They went unbeaten and won the first OHSAA girls tournament in Class A (only 3 divisions then: A, AA, AAA). Actually, in 3 years they NEVER lost a varsity contest, but there were no season ending tournaments in 1...

Re: "Youngest" School in SE Ohio area

Believe Adena and Zane Trace were "born" within a year of each other (1967 Adena? (1966 ZT for sure) first graduating classes)...making them the youngest in Ross County. Adena was a consolidation of: Frankfort, Clarksburg and maybe a sliver of the former Buckskin school district (Buckskin ...

Re: Your a new coach and can pick any Athlete in Southeastern Ohio History

Basketball: Neil Johnston. Was like a 6 or 7 time All Star in the NBA. Also, led the league in scoring 3 or 4 times. 1940-something Chillicothe Alum. Football: Elbie Nickel. Multiple All Pro Olineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Was named to their 75th anniversary alltime team a few years ago. Also ...

Re: State Tournament News and Notes. State Final Times and Matchups

Worm...meet fish. The words overwhelming does not exactly match the stats...but, ALOT more schools in the NE meaning ALOT more titles simply isnt the case. 2 of the top 5 alltime playoff champs are from NE (Iggy/Mooney), 2 typically from SW (Moeller/Marion Local), the other would be considered Centr...

Re: State Tournament News and Notes. State Final Times and Matchups

Speaking of carrying flags, it appears Kirtland is the only remaining NE Ohio team with a shot at a title this year (Lucas will not beat ML). A shame that part of the state can't represent a little better in their own back yard...am sure our "resident" expert will weigh in as to why this i...

Re: SEO HIGH SCHOOLS (ALL TIME STATE TITLES & R/UP'S, ALL SPORTS)

Can only assume you are talking "team" titles? If so, put Adena above Clay. The Warriors have 4, winning the first state volleyball AND girls basketball titles in their inaugural seasons, circa 1975-'76 led by future Olympian Cindy Noble. They returned and won another girls basketball titl...

Re: 1,000 point scorers

Said a while back, scoring 1K points in High School basketball is still a great accomplishment and the ultimate measuring stick if a consistent "scorer"...however its just not as rare as it once was. And, as a result, career scoring records at schools (both boys and girls) are dropping lik...

John Herrnstein (Chillicothe)

John was a 1956 Chillicothe graduate and went on to play baseball and football at the University of Michigan. Despite many outstanding statistical games at fullback for the Wolverines, multiple injuries ended his football career in his 3rd game in 1958. However, John would play baseball at Michigan ...

Neil Johnston (Chillicothe)

Neil was a 1946 Chillicothe Alum, and attended Ohio State where he starred in baseball and basketball. He signed a pro contract with the Phillies out of college where he pursued the sport for just over 2 years. Following a tryout in 1951, Neil joined the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA. He led the ...

Elbie Nickel (Chillicothe)

Believe Elbie was a 1940 or '41 Chillicothe Alum, when his post High School education was put on hold due to World War II. He starred in football, basketball, and baseball at the University of Cincinnati and was drafted in 1947 by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he had an 11 year career. Elbie was a 3...

Re: All Time Leading Scorers Update (2/3/19)

You are welcome. Seriously believe the list is FAR from complete. Imo, some of the more glaring omissions include players from: McClain, Miami Trace, Hillsboro, Circleville, Westfall and Washington Court House. Via many Google searches on the 'Net, these schools simply have nothing compiled for thei...

Re: All Time Leading Scorers Update (2/3/19)

Not trying to be picky, but Carvel Simmons and Ron Storer scored ALL their points for Frankfort, not Adena. And, Veris is credited with 961 career points for Chilly according the the now defunct Ross Co. BKB website (very accurate imo). However, great job and an endless amount of work/research goes ...

Re: Chillicothe All Time Stat Leaders

Attaining this info may be tough. Not sure what kind of archives one will find regarding the 1000 point club at Chilly. Certainly Humpty, Garin Veris, maybe Bayless and a few others. Don't want to count out Gordon Mickey and Neil Johnston either. Mickey played his college career at Indiana, Johnston...
