Top ten is tough. The Hoan could probably give a pretty good list of guys he coached consisting of at least 6 of the top ten.

As stated, it begins with Howard Baker and the gap is huge going into second. I don't know of any school in our area that has someone at the top of there list of allums that was at the top of their craft like the Bake, in any sport. He was probably one of the best 5 or so players in the game. As a soph and first year varsity player at tOSU led his team to a National Title earning co-mvp of the team. In the match mentioned by radioman previously he finished third in the foursome. Nicklaus was only 18 but still was one of the best players in the world, even at his age. Palmer had just won the Masters that spring playing some of his best golf in his life and Dow F. was the reigning US Open champ. 3 of the 4 best players in the world at the time and Howard more than held his own beating Dow on his home course. Howard still owns several records at the OSU golf courses and is definitely top 3 all-time at tOSU.

I'd like a list of teams from GAHS that have made it to the state tourney since 1939. Guess I'll have to call Milhoan. He's got a better memory than me. Of course, he's a few years younger.

Just talked to former GAHS golf coach John Milhoan and this is what he had on record in state tournament play by GAHS

1939
1963
1971
1974
1976
1977
1978

Coach Milhoan said the best finish for one of his teams was in 1971 when the Blue Devils finished 8th in the state with a 686 score. Rusty will check but he thinks GAHS placed sixth in the state one year. He will let me know for sure on Tuesday.

Talked to current GAHS assistant coach Rusty Saunders and this is what he had, but will double check with me Tuesday.

1997
1998
1999
2011

That would be 11 times the Blue Devils have reached the state golf tourney.

Jottings,

Three questions for you.

1. If you did the last story on the GAHS golf team going to state, how come you needed to contact 3 coaches for this information?

2. How come you don't know how they finished in '98?

3. Perhaps most significant, why is this your first "report" on the GAHS golf team this year that went 83-1 this year and won the SEOAL title?

Hmm :122248

It's been 12 years since I retired..Lost some of info on computer. Coach Pope now back in Jackson. I knew Coach Milhoan and Saunders would have info up-to-date. Apparently the school has not updated its championship banners. In fact, all the school flags that were at the old gym have been misplaced or something. We've been in the new school almost two years and they have not been put on display.

Had you checked Gallia's golf files, you would have seen several posts this fall on the Blue Devils golf team

By the way, Gallia's cross country team is taking part in the SEOAL meet at Jackson this evening. Is the course located near the new high school? Got a grandson on the boys team.

Have a good day.

Jottings,

The new course is at the high school. I guess me, Keyser and Craig will all get to see you there.

BTW, I counted two posts this fall.

One looking for district results and the other wanting to know what happened at Ironton. That's several?

Gotta add nick saunders, aka white tiger
And as far as best team ever, this past years
Group, will rank as one of the best , if not the
Best ever at the academy.
