GAHS wins one of three tennis matches

Gallia Academy High Shool's tennis team won one of three matches this past week.

The short-handed Blue Devils lost a non-league match at Marietta on April 20, 3-2, then dropped a 3-2 match to defending league champion Portsmouth on Monday, April 23 before beating Ironton 5-0 n a non-league match Friday evening, leaving GAHS with a 6-5 record with three matches remaining in regular season play.

According to Coach Alex Penrod, Kelle Craft and Jared Lester, No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles have missed the past three matches and Zack Stewart, No. 2 singles has been out with an injury.

Gallipolis has a league match at Chillicothe on Monday, april 30 and two league matches left with Logan on May 1 (at Logan) and a makeupmatch at home against Logan on May 3. GAHS is 3-2 in league action.

At Marietta, Cline defeated Craft, 6-,6-0 in No. one singles.O'Conner downed Christian 6-1, 7-5 in No. 2 singles and Mason beat Gagcus 6-1 7-6 and 7-3.

In doubles, Gallia's NibertSaltzgaber downed Hazelton-Presben, 6-1, 6-2 while Marietia forfeited No. 2 doubles.

Against Portsmouth.Violette downed Lester, 6-0, 6-0, Hatcher beat Gagcus, 6-4, 6-3, and Gallia's Christian beat Hicks, 7-5,7-6 and 7-4.

In doubles play, Nibert-Saltzgaber lost their first match of the year, to R. Shugert-Z. Shugert, 6-3, 6-2, Gallia's Craft-Sebastion beat Meriwether-Otney, 6-3, 6-2.

At Ironton yesterday, Gallia's Christian beat Waddie, 2-6,6-2,6-1. Ironton forfieted No. 2 singles and Gallia's No. 3 singles also won by forfiet.

In doubles action,Nibert-Saltzgaber beat Fields-Wilson, 3-0 (injury) and Gagucas-Lester beat Bowles-Cosby, 6-1, 6-2.

After 11 matches, Gallia's Nibert-Saltzgaber are 10-1 on the season. Christian is 7-3.
