Blue Devils finish second in SEOAL play with 6-2
record; ends regular season action with 9-5 record

Host Gallia Academy High School defeated Logan 4-1 Thursday evening on the GAHS Athletic Complex tennis courts to finish the 2012 regular season action with a 9-5 overall record and 6-2 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League mark, good for undisputed second place in this years race.

Thursday saw Gallia’s freshman Christian Connor earn his first No. 2 singles win of the year in typical fashion—three sets.

Alex Gagucas-Riley Nibert (sectional doubles teammates) won at first doubles while Kelle Craft-Zack Stewart completed the win in No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Sean Saltzgaber, who played doubles all season, was inserted into singles play against the Chiefs Thursday, and he came through for Coach Alex Penrod’s crew.

After Saltzgaber lost his first set in a tie-breaker, he battled back to win the second round rather easily. According to Penrod, in the third set Saltzgaber’s legs began to cramp, but he would continue to serve and stay on the baseline.

Down 5-1, Saltzgaber battled back for an amazing 7-5 victory over Logan’s Fuller.

Gallia’s Jared Lester lost his No. 1 singles to Clay, 6-2, 6-1. Connor Christian won his No. 2 singles over Fuller, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Then came Saltzgaber’s 5-7, 7-4, 6-2,7-5 victory over Logan’s Morgan in the No. 3 singles.

In No. 1 doubles, Gallia Alex Gagucas-Riley Nibert beat Bartholomew-Gregory, 6-0, 6-2 and Kelle Craft-Zack Stewart down Logan’s Limgerisk-Polly, 6-1, 6-0.

After 14 regular season matches, Gallia’s Lester and Nibert are 13-1, Christian 10-3, Gagucas 8-5, Craft 7-4 and Lester 5-8.

Gallipolis will now prepare for the 2012 sectional tournament.
