16 Team Playoffs worth it?

Post by LetsBeReal »

It’s been a hot debate so far.
Correct me if I’m wrong but these are the upsets by region and at the bottom are total wins by each underdog seed…. The #9 seed went 18-10 👀

1:1 12
1:2 14,12,10,9
1:3 9
1:4 9

2:5 12,11,10
2:6 9
2:7 12,11 ,10,9
2:8 9

3:9 9
3:10 9
3:11 9
3:12 10,9

4:13 9
4:14 10
4:15 13,9
4:16 15,9

5:17 9
5:18 12
5:19 15,9
5:20 11

6:21 10
6:22 10,9
6:23 12,11,9
6:24

7:25 13,9
7:26 15,14,13
7:27
7:28 14,13,11,10

16-0-28
15-3-25
14-3-25
13- 3-25
12- 6-22
11- 5-23
10- 8-20
9- 18-10

I don't mind the expanded playoffs...claiming "made the playoffs" and "playoff team" have lost a bit of luster but looking at those stats that's nearly 50% of the games won by the 9-12 seeds. If I remember correctly when the coaches voted on expanding, they voted for 12 teams and OHSAA said no, 16

Also allows teams to play harder schedules without a whole lot of chance that they won't make the playoffs

The 9-12 seeds won 37 games and lost 75. They won 33% of the games. Not a good showing.

Doesn't Maryland let every school in the playoffs?

I say let everybody in and then start playing two regular season games per week. Can you imagine the money that the o h s a a would make. And also, all the orthopedic surgeons would also see. An increase in business.

Shoot, let's make it double elimination.

You can now throw away your old playoff t shirts.
And stop selling them.

Regular season? What for? Make it like travel ball. Teams just travel to tournaments every weekend and play 5-6 games each.

Let’s just do what WV does and let in so many teams in each division and do it March madness style

3 fifteen seeds won so that hurts the argument to go to less teams.

Oh, so 3 out of 28 justifies it? See where those 3 are after week 2.

NO one lower than a 5 seed made the final 4 last year. Top 8 worked great until COVID came around and OHSAA got greedy.

2021: #9 Portsmouth 38, at #8 Zane Trace 22
2022: #9 Portsmouth 28, at #8 Union Local 26
2023: #15 Portsmouth 50, at #2 Fairland 38

Portsmouth is the one of the few schools that as a lower seed outside the top 8 has won 3 years in a row at the higher seeds' field.

The Trojans lost at Ironton in week 12 in 2021 and 2022. A lot of teams would have lost at Tank Stadium in week 12 vs. the Fighting Tigers. The 2021 game was won by IHS 17-6, only 10-6 in the 4th quarter.

Too many teams. If you are going to water it down so much, change the regular schedule to 9 weeks. Teams that make the finals will play 15 straight weeks. The NFL at least gets a Bye week. 8 teams was perfect, in fact, I thought college should do the same, even with 1-4 hosting. Obviously, this is a way for the OHSAA to make more money and the health of the kids is a non-factor. I bet there were a lot of basketball coaches of teams seeded 11-16 extremely worried about some of their players.

To many teams 8 was just right yes a nine seed will win once and awhile.
Portmouth winning at fairland was a different they both was conference foes and was familiar with each other.
* is plenty

Most states allow all teams in.

If you want them all in, play 8 regular season games. 10th week , those who get beat by 20-50 in first playoff game can pick up an extra game to make it a 10 game season. This whole ohio playoff system today, is a complete Joke.
