But you have to admit the system is better than it was when only 4 teams made playoffs and you go 9-1 and don't make it then you have to wonder are we really playing a schedule that we need or play one that you can go 7-3 and make playoffs it's a double edge sword but I like the system it does reward you for playing to your level or better in competition play lower level teams you beat them yes but you have to hope no one else does because it can come back and bite you in the end.ironman02 wrote:This year is probably a good example of why Jackson's schedule needs to be improved a little. I'm not trying to get ahead of myself because the playoffs are a LONG way off, but this is just a hypothetical.
Anyway, it looks like Jackson almost HAS to go 9-1 or better to just get in the playoffs. Waverly and Vinton County are offering little help. Ironton offers a bundle of potential points, but it looks like St. Charles is going to struggle to find many wins. Wellston may be able to help out, but many of their TVC games will be tough tests.
I guess you could say if Jackson doesn't go 9-1 or 10-0, they probably wouldn't be able to compete in the playoffs, but I would be sick if this team didn't get a chance to play in Week 11. They need to earn that right on the field, but it's partly not even up to them. You can only control what you do yourself, but with the playoff system we have, you have to be conscious of those other circumstances as well.

It would be beneficial for Jackson to schedule down next year! I can't see any of the Rockets transferring to Jackson next year!!JIronmen1120 wrote:ive heard jackson has already added athens and wheelersburg weeks 4 and 5 next year so week 3 would still be open... portsmouth west, ironton, sheridan, logan elm.... id love to see one of these teams added

Re: vinton co drops jackson in football
good opportunity for jaxson to schedule a bigger school in this slot on the schedule.

Good to see that the Athens philosophy of "ducking and running" from SEOAL schools is still alive and well in the TVC.

I agree that Logan Elm - Jackson would be a good matchup..... right now they have Zane Trace week 3....Jackson would be a lot better game!. I would think that LE is looking for a good quality nonleague game since Canal Winchester is leaving their league in 2013.

I'm not sure what your objective is by the "duck the competition" comment, but I question your assessment of our scheduling practices. I don't believe "ducking" anyone has been a consideration in the past but I could be wrong.
I have access to the people who do the scheduling and their primary concern is usually travel. This is the case for all sports. Our Athletic Department in general, and Our Athletic Director specifically have worked long and hard to continue to turn our budget around precluding the necessity of pay to play. I know that in a perfect world competitive concerns would be the only concern, but this is not the case. Pay to play not only hurts your competitive ability, it prevents poor kids from participating or puts a much greater financial burden on their families.
As a fan, I like seeing the Ironmen play comparable opponents. I also enjoy the rivalries we have had over the years with Wellston, Vinton County and Waverly. Those programs are not doing real well right now, and the talk of school size takes the center stage. Its all about Jackson beating up on smaller schools. Vinton County is comparable in size, and, by the way, Jackson is a rural school as well with a land mass within the school district comparable to Vinton County and Logan. There are alot of potential athletes in all three of these districts who simply live too far out in their respective counties to be able to participate in interscholastic athletics but those still count in the OHSAA divisional breakdowns. Athens' current dominance in the TVC hasn't lasted quite long enough yet for the nit picking to begin at them for beating up on smaller schools, but if their success continues, it will inevitably follow. No one likes getting beat up all the time by the same team, and no outsiders like seeing it. Soon they will be calling for Athens to schedule bigger schools or even move to a bigger conference, should their winning ways continue.
The Jackson teams in 2003 & 2004 won playoff games with a regular season that began with Wellston, Waverly and Vinton County. It just happened that those teams were all good teams as were Athens, Gallia, and Logan. You can upgrade your schedule to appease your detractors and "prepare" you for the playoffs, but starting out 0-3 isn't very conducive to making the playoffs, so it really doesn't matter how "prepared" you are for week 11 when you've already turned in your equipment and begun conditioning for basketball/wrestling.

Jackson ducked competition? They ducked Logan to 0-4Paladin_II wrote:Long, long overdue. Waverly should do the same thing. As should Wellston. But no one is saying there are bright folks in SEO. VC is better off in the long run. Schedules should be COMPETITIVE.
Jackson ? Depends on who they replace with. If its their usual "duck the competition" route, I won't be surprised.
Re: vinton co drops jackson in football
heard a rumor that VC is wanting to leave the TVC Ohio and join the SOC I with Oak Hill, Ports. East, F.F. Green, Symmes Valley, and Ports. ND. Anybody else hear about this?

I think a Jackson - Athens matchup would be good for both teams. It would give them a better idea of where their teams actually are early in the season. Both teams might also need it to get the necessary playoff points, as well as more respect for playing a tougher schedule.

I would love to see NY and Jackson play again. They haven't played each other since 1994.

Jackson is a growing community? Are we counting pizza shops or students? Do we even have more boys than VC? Didn't the last numbers that came out show that we were losing students from our district? Maybe i'm reading the wrong info...

It looks like we are showing 24 more boys than VC for 2012/2013. I don't call that beating up on smaller competition. Now Waverly and Wellston could use that excuse but even Waverly is within reasonable numbers.

So we avoid competition yet play in a league where Logan has 183 more boys than us, Warren has 61 more, and Chilli has 44 more, and if Marietta had stayed I think they had about 100 more. I love your logic. We can't play smaller schools but it's okay for those teams to play us little dogs in the league?Paladin_II wrote:Long, long overdue. Waverly should do the same thing. Don't think he is reflecting on school size just the state of the programs.ironmen1987 wrote:So we avoid competition yet play in a league where Logan has 183 more boys than us, Warren has 61 more, and Chilli has 44 more, and if Marietta had stayed I think they had about 100 more. What would you do if Jackson goes 8-2 and don't make playoffs blame the state or blame the schedule?
All he is saying the teams you have on schedule are not strong teams and do nothing to help in the long run they are down and have been for several years.
Look at NY played Logan a much bigger school good 1st level points but secondary points will be very little.
And the league games are league games don't like playing Logan or Chilly or Warren then go Independent that augment that is all right for them holds nothing they are League games.
So play them lesser teams and be like Athens and have a great season but miss the playoffs but don't cry that you did because you played a lesser schedule.

Re: vinton co drops jackson in football
I am more concerned with our local schools being able to stay in their budget than I am with the number of playoff games. We never use to make it before they added the extra four teams. You can't screw up the entire athletic program just so a handful of kids MIGHT get to play an extra game. If Jackson has to pay to play then we could lose athletes and be in bad shape real quick. You think VC is struggling now wait till they lose even more athletes when they have to start charging. You can't control the talent that other schools put on the field. These kids love to play against their friends and relatives in our local schools. It's suppose to be about them, not about a bunch of middle age, over weight guys trying to hold onto their glory days through their kids.

Won't be Jackson filling the west spot, West picked up chilley for 1 year.

I would rather have picked up Jackson for a long term than just a one year deal with anyone.West Side Pride wrote:Won't be Jackson filling the west spot, West picked up chilley for 1 year.
