Artiicel: Lakewood 41 Berne Union 14

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night in Hebron, Ohio the all of a sudden powerful Lakewood Lancers did battle with a Berne Union team that had only five seniors on it. When all was said and done, it would be another Lakewood win,41-14, The Lakewood starting defense did not give up a score, the back up unit was scored on twice.

The Lancers would go to the air for their first score and it came on a 20yard strike from,Scott Painter to Brett Sjoquist, with 8:21 left in the first. Pinter would do the holding and strong footed John Hoffman made good on the point after kick to make this a,7-0 game.

The Lakewood defense would get into the act when,Alex Poling put Logan VanGundy on the ground for a 7-yard loss at the 7:13 mark of the quarter. From there the Rockets would punt a short time later.

Lakewood needed just 4-plays to score the games first points and they would better that on their 2nd score. This time they needed just 2-plays. The score came on a 65-yard pass from Painter to #2 Cameron Downs. The pass was beautiful and hit Downs in stride. Painter might be listed at 5-9, but never underestimate his play as a quarterback. The kid can get it done, with both his feet and strong arm.
The score and point after kick gave the Lancers a,14-0 lead, with 4:17 still left in the quarter.

With 2:57 left it was the Lancers mighty, mighty defense that brought the large home crowd to its feet. David Moody got to quarterback Zane Mirgon, for a short loss. Moody had a nice game on the defensive side of the ball. List at 5-10-195 and a linebacker, the Junior seems to have a motor that does not stop and plays like he weighs 225 pounds.

Berne Union did a quick kick with 2:23 left in the quarter, when they had Zane Mirgon took snap out of the shotgun and punted it. The Lancers blitzed on the play and was called for roughing the punter. It would be one of the few mistakes the Lancers would make all night long.

In the 2nd quarter, with 10:39 showing on the clock Jacob Durfey blasted Brody Weidner, the Rockets ball carrier for a 5-yard loss. The Lancers defense seem to play with something to prove in this one. At the 10:14 mark Brody Weidner was picked off by the Lancers Tristan Warthman.

The Lancers would end a 3-play,90-yard drive with a 75-yard run by Chase Shaffer, with 8:52 left in the half. The point after was missed, leaving this 20-0 game.

The Lancers lit up the score board again with 4:16 left in the half, when Painter galloped 57-yards for the score. The point after kick made it a 27-0 Lancers lead. The drive 3-plays,72-yards.

The Lancers Nathan Stepp got to Weidner and held him to no gain with 3:07 left in the half.

The Lancers John Hoffman just missed a 37-yard field goal at the 1:37 mark of the quarter. The kick had plenty of distance but was a little wide.

With just 1:42 going in the third quarter the Lancers got a nice run by,Peyton Morrison for a first down. The kid used a nice move to move the chains. The 13-play, 57-yard drive ended with a 1-yard plunge by Shaffer. The point after kick made this a,34-0 game.

With 3:44 left in the quarter the Lancers defense was at it again when,Moody and James Waters held Weidner to no gain.

The game became a,41-0 contest on a 28-yard run by Shaffer and another point after kick by Hoffman. Doing the snapping was Christian Fahy and Painter did the holding.

The Lancers got back to back sacks on Mirgon. The first one was by Nathan Stepp and the 2nd one was by Bailey Orr. The first unit for the Lancers never allowed the Rockets offense to get anything going. The young Rockets effort was there but they were outmatched in a large way. One has to give it up to those young men from Berne Union or never giving up, even when the game was over and had been for a long while.

1:06 after the back to back sacks the lancers got another one, this one was from Moody.

The Lancers to have a 47-yard pass from Painter to Branson Hinkle with 6:56 left in the game, but a late flag nullified the play. The flag was late and very, very questionable. I think the refs had decided the Lancers were not going to score again.

Berne Union scored late twice. The first one with 5:18 left in the game and came on a Mirgon to Nathan Romine from 76-yards out. The second one came on a 38-yard run by VanGundy, with 1:30 left. Both point after kicks were made by Jacob Ricker making the final score,41-14 Lakewood.

Lakewood got a nice first down run by Jacob Maynard to give the Lancers a first down at the 2:27 mark of the quarter.

Gavin Powers recovered a Lakewood fumble with 2:02 left. Maynard was the Lancer who put the ball on the ground.
