When there is a wall you go over it. Or in this case throw over it like NY done against FF. Or you get to the outside and turn on the Jets and NY has a couple of Jets And and A 747!!! Going to be a Good one!!!

Been seeing a lot of posts about how Nelsonville’s speed causing trouble for Coal Grove. I wouldn’t be over looking the speed of Coal Grove. Kyle Sites, Joey Workman, and Evan Holmes all have excellent speed. Sites and Workman was apart of that 4x2 team Coal Grove sent to regionals last year I believe. I’ve really been impressed within Aaron Music, since the Gallia game he’s really stepped it up completely. Playing great ball right now. I love seeing the excitement this community has shown for this team and the excitement the players have shown for the game of football. This coaching staff has really made a difference in these players. Defense will be the key in this one. The frontline for Coal Grove is like a wall, and this secondary is the best I’ve seen out of coal grove in years. Not making a prediction, just hoping for a fun, clean and injury free regional final for both teams.

ROLL COAL & GO BIG GROVE let’s keep it rolling boys!

I agree with keystone. I bet Jackson isn't even scored on in this one. It helps that they have the home field advantage.

Buckeyes travel to Jackson to face Hornets

By Kevin Wiseman Messenger sports editor
Nov 14, 2017

The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes have history with Coal Grove Dawson-Bryant High School.

The first time the Buckeyes and Hornets made the state playoffs, they squared off in a regional final in 1981.

Nelsonville-York rallied from a 12-0 deficit to gain a dramatic 14-12 victory, as Dawson-Bryant missed a field goal late in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes went on to win the state title that season, as Dawson-Bryant had to settle for a regional runner-up finish.

Now, the two schools meet again, and once again a regional title is on the line.

No. 1 seed Nelsonville-York will face No. 3 seed Dawson-Bryant on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a Division VI, Region 23 final. The game will be played at Jackson High School’s Holzer Field at Alumni Stadium.

The Buckeyes are 12-0 after a 26-20 overtime win over Fort Frye. The Hornets are 11-1 after a convincing 46-22 victory over previously unbeaten Southeastern last week.

Nelsonville-York and Dawson-Bryant are in the Elite Eight of Division VI, and are two of 56 teams across all divisions that are still playing football this week.

The Buckeyes are 12-0 for the first time since 1981. There are only 20 teams in the entire state that are still undefeated.

Nelsonville-York will be playing in a regional final for the sixth time in program history. The Buckeyes won regional titles in 1981 and 1982, and finished as runner-up in 1994, 1997 and 1998.

The Buckeyes are in the playoffs for the 17th time, and are now 10-15 all-time after winning three games over the last two seasons. Including the playoffs, Nelsonville-York is 20-1 in its last 21 games after starting last season 1-2.

It will be the second season in a row that Nelsonville-York has played a neutral site playoff game at Jackson, as the Buckeyes lost to Wheelersburg last year in a Division V, Region 19 semifinal at Alumni Stadium.

Dawson-Bryant is in the playoffs for the 11th time, but the first since 2012. The Hornets now have a 7-10 playoff record after two wins this season.

Like Nelsonville-York, Dawson-Bryant has won two regional championships. The Hornets advanced to the Final Four in 1983 and 1990, but have never appeared in a state championship game.

Nelsonville-York finished third in the Division VI Associated Press poll, while Dawson-Bryant was tied for 11th.

Elsewhere in Division VI, Rootstown (12-0) faces Kirtland (12-0) in a Region 21 final. Findlay Liberty-Benton (11-1) and Jeromesville Hillsdale (9-3) meet in the Region 22 final, while Maria Stein Marian Local (12-0) faces Coldwater (9-3) in the Region 24 championship game.

The OHSAA will announce later in the week how the regional champions will be paired in the state semifinals, which will be played on Friday, Nov. 24.

Hornets prepare for Buckeyes with state semifinals on the line

By RICK ELMORE

COAL GROVE, Ohio - A berth in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division VI football state semifinals will be on the line at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the Coal Grove Hornets meet the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes at Holzer Field at Alumni Stadium in Jackson, Ohio, for the Region 23 championship.

Both teams are vying for their third appearance in the state semifinals.

The No. 3 Hornets (11-1) and the No. 1 Buckeyes (12-0) feature several members of the Associated Press All-Southeast Ohio District team, including defensive player of the year Kimo Baldwin of the Hornets and the Buckeyes' co-offensive player of the year Garrett Maiden.

Baldwin helped lead a Hornets defensive performance last week that handed Ross Southeastern and district co-offensive player of the year Carson Stauffer, their only loss of the year in a 46-22 regional semifinal win at Lucasville.

Aside from Baldwin, the Hornets defense also placed fellow linebacker Sam Angelo on the all-district first team defense. Defensive tackle Joshua Waulk and running back/defensive back Kyle Sites received special mention.

On offense, Coal Grove placed ends Jeb Jones and Darin Bloomfield on the all-district first team offense along with quarterback Nate Harmon who finished Friday's game 8-for-13 passing for 188 yards and three touchdowns plus 70 yards rushing on 13 carries.

The Hornets also got offensive contributions from Baldwin and Sites who both rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Sites rushed for 109 yards on seven carries.

Including Maiden, Nelsonville-York had three players on the all-district first team offense and three on the first team defense. Donovan McCollister, End; Keegan Wilburn, running back and quarterback Maiden were the Buckeyes on the first team offense while the defense was led by defensive end Tyler Speelman, linebackers Ronnie Wend and Colt Yinger. The Buckeyes' placed Jonathan Richards and Shakim Williams, both wide receiver/defensive backs, on the special mention list.

The Buckeyes, who finished the regular season No. 3 in the Ohio Division VI AP poll, went to overtime in their regional semifinal last week to defeat Fort Frye, 26-20. A season ago, while playing in Division V, Nelsonville-York advanced as far as the regional semifinal and lost to Wheelersburg.

Both teams are lead by Southeastern District co-coaches of the year. Rusty Richards of Nelsonville-York and Evan Ferguson of Coal Grove shared the award with Evan Gallaugher of Ross Southeastern.

Hornets, NY have impressive offensive stats

By Jim Walker

They say that the only statistics that matter are the number of wins and losses.

Still, the statistics are filling up for the Coal Grove Hornets and Nelsonville-York Buckeyes who meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Jackson for the Division VI Region 23 championship.

Both teams have seen their skilled players put up impressive numbers, but each team knows how well the interior line plays on offense and defense will be the determining factor.

Coal Grove is led by junior quarterback Nate Harmon (6-2, 185) who is 56-of-94 passing for 933 yards and 10 interceptions. He has also rush 119 times for 806 yards.

Junior running back Kyle Sites (5-8, 160) went over 1,000 yards on the season in last week’s 48-26 win over Southeastern. Sites had 160 carries for 1,011 yards on the season and has scored 12 touchdowns.

The Hornets top receivers are senior wide receiver Sam Angelo (6-4, 205) with 19 catches for 329 yards and four touchdowns while tight end Jeb Jones (6-4, 210) had 18 receptions for 292 yards and four scores.

Senior linebacker Kimo Baldwin (6-1, 230) is the teams’ leading tackler on defense. He was named the Southeast District Defensive Player of the Year.

Coal Grove (11-1) is making its 11th playoff appearance and has an 8-10 playoff record all-time.

The Hornets are 0-3 in previous meetings with the Buckeyes. They lost a 14-12 heartbreaker in 1981 in the first round and Nelsonville-York went on to win its only state title.

N-Y won 20-13 in 1997 and 17-14 in overtime in 1998.

The Buckeyes are 12-0 on the season and began last year 1-2. They are currently on a 20-1 run with the lone loss coming in the playoffs last season.
The Buckeyes have three top runners led by sophomore tailback Keegan Wilburn (5-10, 170) who had 1,161 yards on 146 carries for an 8.0 yards per carry average. He has scored 12 touchdowns.

Senior fullback Colt Yinger (5-11, 185) has carried 104 times for 949 yards and a 9.1 average. He also has 12 touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Garrett Maiden (5-10, 165) was a starting wide receiver the past three seasons.

Maiden is 100-0f-177 passing for 1,846 yards and 21 touchdowns. He has thrown seven interceptions.

Maiden has also rushed 103 times for 644 yards – a 6.3 average – and he has 12 touchdowns.

Maiden has several targets at his disposal.

Wilburn has 29 catches for 589 yards and nine touchdowns.

Senior Chris Cook (5-10, 160) has 23 receptions for 541 yards and four scores and senior Jonathan Richards (6-2, 170) has 18 catches for 293 yards.

Senior Shakim Williams (6-1, 175) has added 11 receptions for 210 yards and three touchdowns while Yinger has nine grabs for 135 yards and two scores.

Senior linebacker Ronnie Wend (6-0, 170) leads the defense with 207 total tackles including 65 solo stops. Williams has 34 solo tackles and 92 overall while Yinger has 134 stops with 23 solo tackles.

Senior Tyler Speelman (5-11, 180), junior Colton Snyder (5-10, 190) and Yinger have combined for 24 sacks.

Richards leads the secondary with five interceptions and Cook had three picks.

Running clock? Get real. You needed overtime to beat Fort Frye. Scored in the final seconds to beat Vinton County. The only way you beat Coal Grove is if the Hornets beat themselves with mistakes and turnovers.
