OHSAA division assignments for '18

Post by carbon_dated »

With the competitive balance thing and all, has the OHSAA finalized the divisions for its schools next year in football?
Was told at gun show Shadyside moved up to D-5 in football. btw, got a sweet deal on a muzzle loader.

No, will not happen for awhile, for one you have to get the transfer numbers and rosters numbers before you can count the competitive balance numbers. No way, anyone from Shadyside knows any of this at this point.

It's every two years right? If so things should stay same as 2017. Changes will come in 2019 season...am I correct?

Appreciate the correction because I found it hard to believe in the first place he would know his school's status already.

Divisions are now redone each year.

Student enrollment count for each school will stay the same as previous year but competitive balance number will change.

So any teams could be moved for next year lol..so Burg or any team could be moved to a new division each year throwing teams and regions for a loop every year. That sounds exciting

Realignments are done every 2 years. Will not be another one until 2019 season

Not anymore. Your overall/base count is done every 2 years, but each year they will add numbers to your base count depending on your roster and if those players add more to your base number (not sure the exact numbers, but kids that live out of district add to it and if they live out of district and moved in after 7th grade adds even more I think). So every year we will have new numbers and possibly new regions/divisions.

My bad I was reading last years rules and I just read about the competitive balancing and you are right it will be done every year and no team can move up or down more than 1 division per year

The board reviewed and approved the divisional breakdowns and tournament representations for the 2018 fall sports that are affected by competitive balance, which include football, volleyball, girls soccer and boys soccer. The lists of schools in each division will be posted at OHSAA.org on Monday, Jan. 22, with a press release. In addition, the board also approved a modification to the business rules for competitive balance, which removes the previous regulation that allowed a school to move up only one division due to competitive balance.

If I'm reading that right, a school can move up more than one division now? So... a Div. V school can be moved up to Div. III? That sounds crazy to me.

Yes you are reading this correctly. This was done because with Competitive Balance formula a school enrollment could increase to where a two division jump is possible. This happen with Toledo Central Catholic in 2017 football season. TCC male enrollment was 235 and had a competitive balance of 200 so adjusted enrollment was 435. The enrollment number of 435 is a middle of road Division 2 school but because TCC was Division 4 in 2016 they could only go up to Division 3. Seems like it may not happen a lot but there are times just like that above the will happen.
