Article: Reynoldsburg 28 Lancaster 7

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night I made to drive to Lancaster, a short 20 miles to catch the game between Reynoldsburg and Lancaster
Reynoldsburg enter 8-1 with a three game win streak. Lancaster came in 6-3, but in a six game winning streak.
This was also for the league title. A win for Lancaster and the league was all theirs, a loss meant tying with Reynoldsburg for the title. More importantly a win would put Lancaster in the state playoffs. A loss and the Golden Gales would need a miracle to get in. Reynoldsburg was in and knew they were hosting no matter what occurred in this contest.

The first big play would come in the shape of of interception by the Purple Raiders Camby Goff on a pass thrown by Tyler Monk.
Geoff returned the ball inside the five, but the refs ruled he stepped out of bounds at the Purple Raiders twenty six yard line. I could not tell from watching the replay on TV, after I got home and re-watched the game.

Mike Whatley would connect with speedy Princeton Hoskins, who took the ball to the seven yard line, Then it was a six yard gain from Courtland Bullard III to set up a one yard score from Guy Cowans-Wright, to make this a 6-0 game, with 7:39 left in the opening quarter. The point after kick from Cocy Goff hit the right upright and caromed off to keep this a 6-0 contest.

The Golden Gales went back to the air at the 3:07 mark and this time the result was a eighteen yard gain, with Curtis Young bringing in the pass. Facing a third and seven, at the 1:27 mark Young hauled in a pass and with it a thirteen yard gain. The drive ended with Phillip Slater(NOT ON EITHER ROSTER)missing a thirty four yard field goal, with 11:50 left in the half.

The two teams would trade sacks on each team next possession. For Lancaster the trio of,Curtis Young, Reese Burwell and Owen Snyder got to Mike Whatley, for a loss of five yards. The Purple Raiders got their sack from the duo of Khyrek Woods and Jeremiah Burton.
The Golden Gales though, would recover from the sack and work the ball down to the Purple Raiders one yard line. From there Alex Widener followed Vince Albertini into the end zone to lock this game up at six apiece. The point after was good, to give Lancaster a 7-6 lead, with :59 left in the half.

At the 9:11 mark of the third Purple Raider, Mershawn Rice a Purdue University recruit dropped a pass that hit him in the hands and would have been a fort yard touchdown. Rice would start his redemption with an fourteen yard catch to move the ball to the Lancaster twenty five yard line, with 8:32 left. Then Whatley connected with Camby Goff for a nine yard gain, on third and six. The drive ended at the 5:26 mark, when Cocy Goff connected on a twenty yard field goal, to give the Purple Raiders a 9-7 lead.

Lancaster would get a nice thirty seven yard finger tip catch from Casey Finck, at the 3:36 mark of the quarter.
Eleven seconds later, Jake Richards picked up nine yards, then on a third and two call, with 11.9 seconds left the Golden Gales would get a thirteen yard catch from Finck, on a nicely thrown ball from Tyler Monk. The drive ended with :22 left in the quarter when Widener was stopped on fourth and one from the Reynoldsburg five yard line by Jeremiah Burton and company.

Mershawn Rice, who continue to redeem himself after the drop would find himself wide open and this time he made the catch and did not stop until he had gone ninety four yards for another Reynoldsburg touchdown. Rice would not be done in this one as he saved his best for last on the other side of the ball. The point after kick would make this a 16-7 game, with 11:47 left in the contest.

With 8:55 left in the game, a bad snap on a punt caused the ball to bounce back to Emmanuel Crawford caused Reynoldsburg punter to take off running, after he was able to field the ball and he would come up just short of the yards needed for the first down.
The Purple Raiders defense would come up big with a interception by Evan Jenkins at the 7:40 mark. A play before Jenkins just missed a pick in the end zone. He would pick up twenty four yards after making the pick.

At the 7:30 mark Hoskins picked up twenty seven yards on a nice catch. The Purple Raiders would have a touchdown called back at the 7:05 mark because of an illegal man downfield.Shaun Strickland would have been credited with an acrobatic catch if not for the flag.
The drive ended on downs, as the Lancaster defense refused to yield anything more.

With 4:57 left in the game, it would be all Reynoldsburg defense, with three big plays being recorded.
First it was a fifteen yard sack on Monk by Ke'Shun Moorer. Then, as I stated earlier Rice, who saved his best for last made a pick and took it 99.5 yards for another Purple Raiders score. He would break three tackles on his way to pay dirt. Then another pick six by Breyon Eddings, would end the scoring to make this a 28-7 final.
