2018 Playoff news and notes. State Finals Edition!

Post by LucasDavenport »

Going to start a thread for discussion on anomalies, outliers, rematches, and general playoff craziness.

Division 1 is interesting this year to say the least.

Only 1 undefeated team will enter the playoffs: Colerain (10-0). Only 7 more survived with 1 loss (Canton McKinley is 8-1 and plays undefeated Massillon Washington tomorrow afternoon so this might be reduced to 6 by Saturday evening).

Region 3 participants Miamisburg, Pickerington North and Lancaster can all be a little envious and should be allowed to express some geography bias. These 3 teams finished 9th — 11th and out of the playoffs in Region 3. All 3 would have qualified in Region 4 as 6th, 7th and 8th. All 3 would have qualified in Region 2 as 3rd, 5th and 6th and any of the 3 would have been 8th in Region 1.

Region 2 qualifiers Westerville Central and Toledo Start (7th And 8th) defeated only 1 Division 1 team total. Westerville Central beat 0-10 Grove City in week 2. Toledo Start only played 1 Division 1 team and somehow after starting 1-4 stumbled in at 6-4. Toledo Start’s 6 wins were over 2 D2, 3 D3 and 1 D5 teams whose overall record was 22-37. And they made the playoffs in Division 1 with an average of 15.2697. They would have finished 12th in Regions 1 and 3 and 9th in Region 4.

Colerain’s reward for finishing 10-0 and 1st in Region 4 is a rematch with 8 seeded St X. Colerain defeated St X 14-12 in week 2 in by far their toughest contest of the season. 3 seed Elder faces 6 seed Moeller in a rematch from week 7 which saw Moeller post a 24-21 win.

Hilliard Davidson’s reward for finishing 1st in Region 3 is a week 11 battle vs Huber Heights Wayne. The other 2 Hilliard schools qualified as well. 3 seed Hilliard Bradley faces 6 seed Pickerington Central and 7 seed Hilliard Darby faces 2 seed Clayton Northmont.

Region 1 has found it’s 8 qualifiers but some shuffling can and probably will occur in the seeding before settling by Saturday night.

In Division 6 Region 21: New Middletown Springfield finished 9-1 and an average of 15.95. Their only loss was to 10-0 McDonald. They finished in 10th place and out of the playoffs. Best record not to qualify honors to you Mr New Middletown Springfield Man.

They would have qualified in Division 1 Region 2....

Canal Winchester also went 9-1 and with an average of 22.45 finished 9th in Division 2 Region 7.

And, yes they would have qualified in Division 1 Region 2.... in 3rd position and would have played a Home Game.

The 8 teams who did qualify in Region 7 have a combined record of 72-7.

Staying in Division 6 Region 21:

Perennial power Kirtland had 5 shutouts and gave up a total of 32 points.

No team scored more than 7 points against Kirtland.

Kirtland scored 409 points this season. Therefore they outscored their opponents on average 41-3.

Division 5 will have a slightly different story this year.

Last year’s final 4 was Pemberville Eastwood, Canfield South Range, Middletown Madison and Wheelersburg. Only 1 of those 4 can advance to the State semifinals this year. Eastwood and South Range did not qualify and Madison and Wheelersburg are both in Region 20.

Teams to watch out for this year are:

Region 17— Orrville, Labrae and Akron Manchester

Region 18—Genoa Area and Anna

Region 19—Johnstown-Monroe, Meadowbrook and Ridgewood

Region 20— Wheelersburg and Madison.

Sticking around in Division 5, 9th place honors in Region 20 go to Minford who started 5-0 but finished at 6-4 with an average of 12.6. The Falcons play in the 5 team Southern Ohio Conference (2) and 3 of the 5 teams qualified for the playoffs. Minford finished 0-4 in SOC2 play and dealt with injuries over the final weeks.

Portsmouth started 3-3 but closed with 4 straight wins to move up to 7th in Region 20 with an average of 13.65. Portsmouth finished 2-2 against the 4 playoff teams on their schedule.

Neither Portsmouth nor Minford would have qualified in Division 1 Region 2..... cause I know you were thinking it.

Staying in D5 Region 20. Middletown Madison finished 10-0 and 2nd with an average of 23.05. They played 0 teams who qualified for the playoffs and their opponents finished with a combined record of 39-61.

Wheelersburg (9-1) was 1st in Region 20 with an average of 29.75. They encountered 6 playoff qualifiers and finished 5-1 in those contests. Their opponents finished with a combined record of 63-37.

And yes. D1 R2. Both.

Huge game on Saturday Night between Lima Central Catholic and Lucas

If Lima Central Catholic wins they will move to 1st in Region 24 which places Coldwater 2nd And Marion Local 3rd. The MAC heavyweights would then face off in week 12 and only 1 would advance to Regional final.

Also if Lucas loses it drops them to 2nd in Region 27 and alters Franklin Furnace Green’s path as Green is 7th seeded and currently is opposite Harvest Prep. Harvest Prep moves to 1st if Lucas loses and Green would travel to Lucas for their week 11 game. Harvest Prep is a 2 hour bus ride and Lucas is more like 3 1/2 hours...

Canal Winchester was all set to keep playing Athens this year. Called late, broke the contract, which forced Athens to find a game week two. The Bulldogs were lucky to add Fairland, but ended up losing to the Dragons 35-31. Canal Winchester instead played and beat Olentangy Berlin who finsihed (1-9) ... After the dust settled, Canal Winchester finished with a sterling 9-1 overall record BUT missed out on the playoffs in Division II, Region 7. Fairland on the other hand rode those 2nd level points from Athens into the playoffs with a subpar (6-4) record ... I'd say the Canal AD and coach have to be kicking themselves for backing out of that week two game versus Athens. lol

Fun stuff! Reminds me of how excited I used to be about the playoffs each year! Sometimes, life rolls you some different personal dice that take away your focus and you have to follow to get along.

This was a good post to remind me of how much I miss my years 35-50. The last 5 have taken me in a different direction, so thanks for this post! I really enjoyed it & love this site!

Let's just start with Waverly being in Region 16 for third year in a row. That is not the region they should be in. 15 is southeast Ohio and where Waverly belongs. Both Unioto and Westfall are further west than Waverly geographically and The Columbus schools and even Circleville would make more sense in the West Region.

Any one in 16 care to move to 15?

Everyone raises their hand... Waverly raises both hands!!

There are annual tales of teams with sterling records getting left out of the playoffs and the opposite. Any playoff system using a harbin like system rewards both strength of schedule and wins over fan's eyeball evaluation.

One of the ways to reduce surprises in playoff qualifiers would be to qualify the top 32 teams in points in each class state wide, regardless of geographic region.

Another would be district schedules to determine playoff qualifiers, as in Kentucky.

The first would leave many SE Ohio teams on the outside of the playoffs. The second would likely see teams with losing records make the field.

No system is perfect so the status quo looks good.

A better name for this thread would have been

“Speak Nerdy to Me”. Internal nod of head. A change is in order!

Division 6 Region 23

The SVC power play!

Paint Valley (10-0) finished 1st with an average of 23.1879 and host Grandview Heights in week 11. Over/under on Grandview Heights Couples discussing moving to Bainbridge in Retirement because they realize it’s God’s country is 12.

Frankfort Adena (7-2) finished 5th with an average of 17.7222. There is no truth to the rumor that Adena AD is negotiating with OHSAA on moving down to 6th. “We beat SE and truly would enjoy it if THEY went to Shadyside”

OHSAA points to Last year in College Football when Auburn defeated Alabama and their reward was an extra opportunity to NOT make the Playoff.

Monday morning arrives and Adena AD finds a care package from Auburn AD who understands the situation as only he could.

Southeastern (7-3) finished 6th with an average of 15.5232 and will travel to Fort Frye unless They are upset tonight by a basketball school. But, hey Kentucky is a football school now so who knows? If Fort loses then SE travels to Galion Northmor.
Either way SE fans and families will be crossing one of those 2 destinations off of their bucket list and are very thankful they aren’t destined for Shadyside.

By the way Shadyside’s field is by the Middle school and you enter the town via Time Machine which funnels you back to a kinder gentler time.
