Nice work

They just called big and small?

Lose any MVL teams?

No for both. There are only 1 or 2 teams close to Zanesville's size and none close to Logan's. The majority of MVL schools wanted D4 and D5 schools for expansion.

Cambridge wanted in the league, but the MVL schools did not want to expand beyond 12 teams or Cambridge would have been in.

They think Cambridge and Zanesville are “city “ schools. MVL is not an option for either.

exactly..but the term they used is "inner city"..that's comical.

Opinion: If any of the 12 MVL teams decide to go elsewhere, I am very, very confident that Cambridge would receive an offer to join.

Fact: The MVL schools decided to expand by 3 teams if 3 schools of the size desired and acceptable location (basically neighboring a current MVL school) were available. If only 1 or 2 teams were interested, the MVL was going to stay at 9 teams. Meadowbrook, Coshocton, River View and Cambridge all met the criteria and applied. All were found acceptable by the MVL and the first 3 schools that were asked (Meadowbrook, Coshocton, River View) all said yes. If any had said no, Cambridge would have been asked.

Opinion: So why was Cambridge 4th on the list. Can't say for sure but I have a guess. Coshocton and Meadowbrook are smaller schools. More schools view River View as a team they could beat in multiple sports as opposed to Cambridge. I never heard any derogatory comments about Cambridge during or after that process.

Editorial:
Tri-Valley was not a big school when they joined the MVL in the 1960s. River View and Sheridan were mostly bigger schools than Tri-Valley in the 1980s and 1990s. Over the years the number of students attending Tri-Valley has stayed consistent while most schools in the league have experienced a decrease. If Tri-Valley ever left the MVL, there is no way they would ever get voted back in. So it is a pipe dream for any school TV's size or bigger to think the majority of the MVL schools (which are smaller student populations) are going to vote them in. A certain large area school can come up with all the reasons they want, but IT IS ABOUT SCHOOL SIZE (not that I couldn't find other reasons if I wanted to be THAT GUY). Logan is too big and too far away. Warren is an acceptable size, but too long a trip for a league that is used to 90 minute trips being the LONG road trips.

Thanks for the explanation Teach..always very informative. I do believe that your "opinion" section is spot on regarding RV. And what's crazy is RV demanded they be in the smaller division in ECOL for competitive reasons but now they will be in larger division in MVL.

Meadowbrook is actually larger than Cambridge (412 to 417) w/ Cambridge slightly higher in boys. The perception would be different but facts say otherwise. And considering that Cambridge also brings swim teams and soccer teams should have made this a no-brainer in favor of Cambridge. I'm not upset about it, just confused.

I was repeating what I was told from a representative from one of the MVL schools in regards to the "inner city" comment. I was told this from the first round of meetings a few years ago when expansion was turned down. Anyone with any exposure to Cambridge knows this is ridiculous in regards to landscape and perceived behavior of players/fans.

I'm thinking it was about 6 years ago when only Cambridge applied to league. MVL would have went from 9 to 10 teams. Small schools wanted to split big/small if a 10th team was added. Big schools did not want that. Really wasn't a push back on not wanting Cambridge; league just wasn't ready for divisions and votes not there to go to 10 teams and not have divisions.

It was 3 to 4 years ago when the MVL got serious about adding teams and going to divisions. I think if you go back and look at school size then Cambridge was certainly bigger than Meadowbrook as compared to now.

Divisions in the MVL is based on student population in HS per ODE/OHSAA numbers. If River View wanted in, it meant large school division. If Meadowbrook wanted in, it meant no more OVAC. MVL has a rule that league teams can only be in MVL. No negotiating. Accept it or turn down the offer and watch Cambridge take the spot.

If BobcatQB's attendance numbers are accurate, Cambridge might have been in the small school division. Not sure Cambridge or the small schools would have been happy with that.

Very true, would have zero interest in the smaller division. I took the numbers from the OHSAA website for 2019. Yes, we would have been larger before. We used to be pretty consistent around 245 boys.

3 comments. 1. Cambridge would have been fine with the smaller schools. Their current scheduling in football and basketball reflects that today. 2. It took the MVL 50 years to expand, don’t expect that to change soon. 3. Finally , Cambridge was not excepted into the league for various reasons. One reason left out is , supposedly, is their visitors locker room is very small and at one time in bad shape. Some teams supposedly dressed before they departed for Cambridge ?

The MVL expansion seems to have been well planned and appears to have a good chance for long run stability. Still I find it strange to read Cambridge and Coshocton being described as "small schools" when thirty to forty years ago they competed in once premier conferences like the Cardinal Conference or the Central Ohio League. I guess being out of state for extended periods of time makes you unaware of how community demographics have changed.

A school not being voted into a league because of a football locker room? Come on, that’s ridiculous. Been in plenty of visitors locker rooms, ours was certainly comparable to many. Heck yes it was small and cramped..and I’m sure it was on purpose.

That being said, the locker room was moved 3 years ago to the original home locker room which is about twice the size.
