Pocket Aces' Top 10 Pro/College Games of 2007

Post by Pocket Aces »

Wow, this was a really tough list to narrow down.....the pis%er is that I know I have left off/forgotten some doozies, but here we go with my top ten games of the past year.....note that these are not necessarily the most important/meaningful/"superfan" games of the past year (hence the exclusion of OSU's 2 championship losses), but my favorite games from an entertainment standpoint.

Let the debates ensue.....if you don't like my picks - MAKE YOUR OWN LIST! :-D

(1) 5/31/07 - Game 5, Eastern Conference Finals - Cavs 109 Pistons 107 (2 OT)

Lebron goes OFF with 48 and puts the Cavs on his back as he single-handedly owned the Pistons down the stretch....big shot after big shot - one of my favorite games of all-time....the legend of LBJ truly begins.

(2) 3/17/07 - NCAA Round 2 - Ohio State 78 Xavier 71

This one was for the ages....watched the game at Chili's at the Charleston Town Center prior to a youth AAU game.....a good friend of mine is the biggest XU fan on Earth and I was seriously concerned about him jumping off the bridge after XU collapsed down the stretch.

Ohio State trailed 55-44 with 7 ½ minutes left, and was still down 61-52 with 2:54 left.

(3) 3/22/07 - NCAA Regional Semis - Ohio State 85 Tenny 84

Yet another SICK Buckeye comeback as remotes across Ohio had to be repaired after OSU's pathetic first half performance....to make matters worse, the Bucks were losing to stupid Bruce Pearl....the second half was a different story however, as Ron Lewis once again took over....Bucks went on to dominate Memphis in the Regional Finals to advance to the Final Four.

(4) 10/6/07 - LSU 28 Florida 24

Not a fan of either squad, but easily the best NCAA football game of the 2007 season was played in early October in Baton Rouge....hard hitting, risky play-calling, athletic playmaking....this game had it all....plus Florida covered the spread ;-)

For what it's worth, this was the only legitimately well-played game that I saw LSU play all season.

(5) 11/24/07 - Anaheim Classic - USC 57 Miami (Ohio) 53

The man (OJ Mayo) takes on THE MAN (my favorite NCAA hoops mind - Charlie Coles) in a cornucopia of hoops enjoyment.....backscreen after backscreen by Miami to set up the coach's dream - Tim Pollitz, while OJ's athleticism and hoops knowledge gets put to the test by the less talented, but far superior-coached Redhawks squad.

Had to tape the game as the 1230 am start was past pawpaw's bedtime....hated to see Miami lose the game, but USC earned the victory.

(6) 10/18/07 Rutgers 30 USF 27

Ray Rice and crew catch USF off their big upset of WVU and play a highly entertaining football contest with numerous trick/huge plays under the Tursday night ESPN lights.

Continued the year-long theme of number 2 squads biting the dust.

(7) 12/5/07 - Wazzu 51 Gonzaga 47

Another college hoops purist's wet dream as two of my favorite programs meet in a late night affair. Tony Bennett versus Mark Few - you know it's gonna be about defense and half-court offensive sets!

Just a fantastic game to watch.

( 8 ) 10/1/07 - One-Game Playoff - Rockies 9 Padres 8

I still can't believe that the Pads (and Trevor Hoffman!) choked this game away in a contest full of controversial calls.

(9) 11/20/07 - CBE Classic - UCLA 68 Mich State 63

Kevin Love's coming-out party upstages Drew Neitzel's sick stomach as UCLA rallies to beat Sparty.

(10) 9/16/07 - Browns 51 Bengals 45

Great game to watch! Check the defense at the door, bro.

As Chris Berman says, "I remember because I was there!". Whenever Ron Lewis hit the three to send it in overtime I about jumped on the backs of some Ohio State fans sitting in front of me. Definitely a tremendous game and awesome atmosphere. I wish I could relive that moment again! ;-)

Oklahoma vs Boise State? The list seems to favor teams from Ohio. But boy was that Cavs game amazing.

It wasn't all that a great game, as much as it was a great finish. It was still a good game though.

But where is Colts vs. Patriots AFC Championship.
