Ohio's Bassett says he's going pro

Ohio junior guard Armon Bassett has decided to forgo his senior season at Ohio University and will try to take his basketball game to the professional ranks.

The Indiana transfer, who starred in his only season with the Bobcats, has decided to go pro after averaging a team-high 17.1 points this year.

Bassett helped lead Ohio to one of its most memorable seasons ever by putting together his best games at the end of the year, carrying Ohio to a Mid-American Conference Tournament championship and a first-round upset over Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament.

After averaging 30 points in the five postseason games, Bassett’s pro stock might never be higher. Making the jump to the NBA would be a stretch, but Bassett likely will play overseas.

Bassett first made the announcement about his decision on Facebook.com by posting, “This is my final week in Athens.” (His page is restricted to "friends.")

Ohio University Intercollegiate Athletics and head coach John Groce would not comment on Bassett’s decision, and Bassett could not be reached for comment.

Is he signing an agent? Cause he might have a shot at returning if he doesnt.

OU was lucky to have him for the time they did, after leaving Indiana in the Kelvin Sampson debacle.

Let us get stories straight, Bassett flunked out of Ohio University and had zero chance of being eligible next year. Best of luck to the young man, but he failed on the student part of student-athlete.

I don't think he's quite NBA talent yet, but there are likely good opportunities for him to play overseas. Good luck in the pros; wherever you end up.

I think if he goes over sees and works on his game he could make the move to the NBA in a few years and have a successful career

I understand the student part of it but what I was saying above was just about the "basketball" side of it, Very talented player who brings it on the court and has no clue about studies. You get a handful of kids in college nowadays that go pro after 1 or 2 years and are set for life and the rest that give up on school probably go back home and are never heard from again unless something bad happens. Most of the "regular" student population would love to have college paid for with books, meal money, traveling and the like but some athletes just don't figure it out until it's too late and they realize they aren't being idolized anymore.

You gonna go to class and do his work for him!! There is a reason why this kid has been to 3 different schools.

Good luck to the young man. He attended college to advance his sports career...not is academic future.

Bassett enrolled for classes on Monday (week after classes started), however he is still ineligible at this time and the program will not comment on his future at this time.
