2017 Ohio State Buckeyes - Champions Year in Review

This will be a thread highlighting all the championship level teams from Ohio State, whether it be at the conference or national level.

For a second year in a row, Ohio State finished runner-up in the final Director's Cup standings. In addition, the Buckeye men's programs won the 2016-17 Capital One Cup for the top male athletics program in the nation.

Men's Volleyball

National Champions

MIVA (Conference) Champions

The 2017 season included the continuation from the 2016 season of a 42 match winning streak. The Buckeyes also successfully defended their 2016 national championship by winning their second in a row. In addition to all of this, Nicolas Szerszen was named the National Player of the Year and the national tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Synchronized Swimming

National Champions

North Regional Champions

The Buckeyes claimed their 30th national title in program history in synchronized swimming. Numerous athletes won national titles in a dominant performance, and National Athlete of the Year, Emma Baranski, earned four national titles on her own en route to the Buckeyes national championship performance.

Fencing

National Runner-up

Midwest Conference Champions

The Buckeyes had dominated the Midwest Conference Tournament by winning six individual titles, and a team championship. Although fencing is a men's and women's combined sport, the women's team from OSU dominated their competition. Following, Ohio State earned runner-up at the NCAA Championships.

Wrestling

National Runner-up

Big Ten Champions

The Buckeyes chipped away at a Big Ten title by defeating then #1 Penn State at the conference championships. Although the Buckeyes defeated Penn State at the conference championship, they were unable to do so at the national championships as they finished as national runner-up. Kyle Snyder earned his second national championship in the heavyweight division as he capped of an undefeated season.

Men's Lacrosse

National Runner-up

The men's lacrosse team completed their best season in program history in 2017. For the third time in the season, the Buckeyes faced off with Maryland (regular season, Big Ten tournament, NCAA Championship), this time it was in the national title game where they faced their conference foe, pushing them to a tight fourth quarter game, but ultimately falling and claiming the national runner-up finish.

Men's Gymnastics

National runner-up

Big Ten Champions

The Buckeye gymnastics team capped off their second consecutive Big Ten title in 2017. Then took that all the way to the national championships where they claimed a runner-up finish.

Women's Tennis

NCAA Final Four

Big Ten Champions

The women's tennis team at OSU finished off another dominating season on the courts. Claiming the 2017 Big Ten title in dominating fashion, without really even being phased in the conference tournament. The Buckeyes then went on to the national tournament cruising through play until the final four where they eventually fell. But, Francesca Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase claimed the national doubles national championship in the mean time.

Men's Tennis

NCAA Final Four

Big Ten Champions

The Buckeyes continued their dominance in 2017 by claiming their 12th consecutive Big Ten championship, both regular season and tournament. The Buckeyes advanced all the way to the final four of the NCAA Tournament before eventually falling in a close match.

Women's Golf

NCAA Top 5 Finish

Although this women's golf team didn't win the Big Ten title or the national championship, they did break down some barriers in the program with a great season. They had top 3 performances in both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Regional. They then qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished off the season with a 5th place performance.

Women's Rowing

Big Ten Champions

For the fifth consecutive season, the 2017 women's (there is no men's rowing in the NCAA) rowing team claimed the Big Ten Championship and carried it back to Columbus. In the NCAA Tournament they were also trying to claim their 4th straight national title, but ultimately fell short of that and finished 5th.

Women's Basketball

NCAA Sweet 16

Big Ten Champions

In the 2016-17 season, the women's basketball program returned back to national title contention, staying in the top 10 for most of the year. OSU was led by 1st Tm All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year, Kelsey Mitchell, to yet another Big Ten Championship and ultimately a Sweet 16 finish in the NCAA Tournament.

Women's Soccer

Big Ten Champions

The fall 2017 season for the women's soccer team saw them claim the Big Ten Championship in the regular season, outright, for the first time in program history. They were booted in the first round of the NCAA Tournament though, unfortunately. They were led by All-Americans Morgan Wolcott and Nikki Walts.

Cotton Bowl Champions

Big Ten Champions

It was the fall of 2017 that the Buckeyes finished the season at 12-2. They not only won the Big Ten Title game, their 36th in program history, but they also claimed a bid and a victory in the Cotton Bowl.

Pistol

Women's Aggregate National Champions

Although pistol is another one of those combined men's and women's events at the national level, the women's pistol team did quite well. Using aggregate score, which the NRA does, the Lady Buckeyes claimed their fourth aggregate national title in program history.

In addition to conference and national championships for the Buckeyes in 2017, they also earned numerous victories over "TTUN" in numerous sports (These scores include all of 2017, both spring and fall):

Baseball: 1-2

Men's Basketball: 2-0

Women's Basketball: 1-0

Football: 1-0

Men's Golf: Ohio State (3rd) - Michigan (9th)

Women's Golf: Ohio State (3rd) - Michigan (5th)

Men's Gymnastics: 1-0 (And placed higher at Big Ten tournament)

Women's Gymnastics: 1-0 (And Michigan placed higher at Big Ten tournament)

Men's Ice Hockey: 4-2

Men's Lacrosse: 1-0

Rowing: Ohio State finishes higher than Michigan at Big Ten Tournament

Women's Soccer - 1-0

Softball: 1-2

Men's Tennis: 2-0

Women's Tennis: 2-0

Wrestling: Ohio State finishes higher than Michigan at Big Ten Tournament
