California to allow pay for play
California has passed a law allowing college athletes to profit from their name, likeness, and image. Thoughts? I think the NCAA is behind the times on this. My biggest issue is this...
I'm ok but you must apply your earnings against your scholarship and your vacated scholarship needs to be applied to others who cannot profit from their identity.

Re: California to allow pay for play
This is going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
If athletes at California schools exercise their new rights, that will be a violation of NCAA rules. Will the NCAA ban California schools from NCAA championships or even regular sesaon schedules?
Will Congress take up the issue and make the California law nationwide, effectively blowing up the NCAA and any pretense of collegiate amateur athletics?
Will this force the P5 conferences to resign from the NCAA
and form their own governing body for "professional" collegiate athletics, doing away with scholarships and the pretense of student athletes ?
Scholarship football and basketball athletes receive valuable scholarships for their services and I am sure under the table benefits. Yet you could argue they really are indentured servants given they generate millions of dollars for their schools and the athletes cannot directly profit from their effort. Interesting times we live in.

Heard Mark Cuban say last night if this gets through it will be the beginning of the end for college football. I agree with him. They will never have enough money and will always be squabbling for more. It also might make already high ticket prices skyrocket.

Not to mention the recruiting advantage the state would have. The days of the SEC dominance would be short lived!

All the best athletes will go to California schools. The NCAA could ban them but the NCAA will lose that fight. Everyone will watch the California schools and treat the NCAA schools as mid majorOmega wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 12:24 pm This is going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

NCAA will fold like a cheap lawn chair. This will happen and no, the SEC won't let left coast schools get a leg up. Every state in the south will pass similar legislation.

Is the State of Ohio going to join California?

Re: California to allow pay for play
Gene Smith said he was against it, but I bet he would quickly change his mind if it was enacted out there.
Re: California to allow pay for play
I do not think Smith is a proponent of the California law but he is part of a NCAA committee studying the situation.

Another odd thought, could player "profit" trickle down to the high school level?
