Rio Grande Holiday Tournament

Post by Ironman92 »

7th and 8th grade

8th grade (Thursday 5:15)

Logan vs Waverly
Portsmouth vs Barboursville

Logan vs Waverly could be fun. Logan has stud player Myers, nice size to go with him and solid guards. If they can handle Waverly’s intense pressure this could be a good game. Waverly has the better team but Logan has talent and are very well coached. Wouldn’t be surprised if Logan has already scouted Waverly.

I know nothing of Barboursville. Last year’s 2 WV teams weren’t very good but Barboursville is a big school or part Cabell Midland could have some nice athletes.

I’ll be surprised if Waverly doesn’t win convincingly in the finals. I’ll guess they beat Logan by 15 in the semis.

Curious if tournaments like this count 1 or 2 games against the number of games that teams are allowed to play? Maybe this is a good way for teams to get a couple extra games

I honestly don’t know. Last year we had virtually no league and played in this tournament....then played in tournament at end of season and put us up to 18 games. I think some had 19 games. This season we have our new league so some teams and this tournament were dropped. Last year this tournament wasn’t very competitive. This year should be a bit better but 4 totally new schools competing this year.

Is Futhey back yet for Waverly? Heard he was out recently in their loss to Southeastern. Hoping his ankle injury wasn’t too bad from the Minford game.

Futhey went our first minute of the second half against Minford and was out for the SE game.
Markham has been playing hurt as well.
Word is Futhey will be back for the Rio tourney, probably won’t be 100%.

His presence alone is significant. Logan has decent size. If Futhey plays, he’ll help. Hope for no set backs though if he plays.

Good game between Wavetly and Logan 8th grade.

Waverly won 46 to 42 in overtime.

Waverly led all game long and was up 36-28 with about 3:40 left. Logan battled back and sent it to overtime. In OT Waverly was unsuccessful on 2 attempts and then Logan had a chance for basically their first lead of the game but ref called double dribbling on Myers. Waverly took it down and Robertson pulled up on a quick 3 and drained it. Logan hit a basket at other end to pull within 1. Logan fouled and put Robertson on line for 1 on 1....he missed but Will Futhey flew in to steal the rebound and kick it back to Robertson who was fouled again...this time swishing both free throws to seal the game.

Refs struggled both ways. Waverly fans upset a lot and Logan fans scratching their heads a lot. Tegan Myers had a nice game for Logan and Mahaffey drilled some big 3’s for Logan. Robertson set up his teammates and drilled 2 3’s. Will Futhey controlled the paint blocking several shots and intimidating many other shots (several when he wasn’t in range to block) Wade Futhey drilled 3 3’s and was the X factor for this game. The biggest shot was likely a 25 foot 3 with a hand in his face at the halftime buzzer.

Very impressed with Coach Myers of Logan....his plays really got a lot of good open shots underneath, just didn’t finish several of them.

Waverly didn’t play great and they still beat a very solid Logan team.

Tegan Myers gonna be a very very good high school player. If Robertson gets to 5’9 he might be one of the best players in the state...regardless he will jump right in to varsity play next year.

I look for both teams to win by about 20 tomorrow.

Waverly won by 18 over a very good Barboursville WV team. Logan team was very good as well. Both Logan and Barboursville were very well coached and had some very skilled players. Will Futhey was back, not 100% but controlled the rebounding both days and that really helped the Tigers. Wade Futhey had big games both days and dropped key three point shots when needed. In the Championship game Wade Futhey got hit hard in the nose and came back down the court with blood gushing and dropped another three before going out to get the bleeding stopped. Trey Robertson and Mark Stully controlled the ball both days, their ball handling skills and knowledge of the game are already high school level! Trey Robertson also hit several threes in the Championship game. Trey was named All tourney MVP and Wade Futhey Waverly MVP.

Thanks for the recap, nothing surprising at all. Barboursville looked pretty good but didn’t look like they’d matchup with Waverly very well. Waverly’s guards are tough to play for the first time. Will is IMO the most imposing kid in 8th grade basketball around here and Wade hitting 3’s makes them a very tough matchup.
