If it is causing flooding and the children won't be able to get home later because of it, you dismiss early.

actually Vinton County's Raccoon Creek rises fast in weather like this ... I think it was due to the flooding

It is coming down hard here. You'd better get out your rubber boots!

Thankfully it didnt all come at once fast enough to cause a disaster area.
Ever since Shadyside in 1991, forecasters make every attempt to warn our area about flooding early and often. Some even say we over do it. Especially flash flooding which is a different kind of animal because then it all comes at once. and that is scary for me because it is very hard to forecast when and where spring and summer thunderstorms will develop.
Flooding in our region is a very real and serious threat. Because of the hills and run off. People should take the alerts seriously, and I think most do. It was a good idea for area schools to call off class.
What was intresting about this flooding event is that Athens county did not get as much rainfall as Perry, Fairfield and Hocking. But run off from the Hocking Hills region goes into smaller creeks and streams in the Hocking River basin. and these smaller streams all meet together and flow into larger creeks around the Glouster, Nelsonville and Athens area.
So while Perry and Fairfield got more rain, Athens County gets more flooding because it all flows in that direction.

I am going on vacation with my son's family . We are leaving on Saturday. Do you think there will be any problems getting across the Ohio River at Gallipolis and going to the West Virginia turnpike?
