At this point, I doubt many of us need anything to get us fired up for football season, but here's a look back that may be of interest...

(Following is believed to be true but cannot be guaranteed)

Most state titles
9 Cleveland St. Ignatius
8 Newark Catholic
7 Cincinnati Moeller
6 Versailles
6 Youngstown Mooney
6 St. Henry
6 Cleveland Benedictine
4 Delphos St. John's
4 Maria Stein Marion Local
4 Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary
3 (11 teams with 3 each)

Most appearances in the finals
13 Newark Catholic (8-5)
11 Cincinnati Moeller (7-4)
10 Cleveland St. Ignatius (9-1)
9 Versailles (6-3)
9 Youngstown Mooney (6-3)
8 St. Henry (6-2)
8 Ironton (2-6)
7 Cleveland Benedictine (6-1)
7 Columbus St. Francis DeSales (3-4)
7 Mogadore (3-4)
6 Canton McKinley (3-3)
6 Cincinnati Princeton (3-3)
5 (5 teams with 5 each)

There have been over 720 teams that have competed over the period 1972-2007. Of those, 159 have made it to one or more championship games, with 91 winning at least one title.

Interesting... among the schools with 4 or more titles, only 3 are public schools. And, all 3 of em come from the MAC.

The funny thing is, the MAC conference in western Ohio for high schools is probably better than the MAC conference for the colleges!!  I would think that Coldwater would be on that list somewhere also. Last year at the state finals when they beat Cardinal-Mooney was one of the best football games I have ever been to.

I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY, THINK THOSE CATHOLIC TEAMS DON'T RECRUIT, YOU ARE CRAZY. NOTHING AGAINST MY CATHOLIC FRIENDS, OF WHICH I HAVE MANY. IT'S JUST A FACT. PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINPLY CANNOT HANG WITH THESE GIANT SCHOOLS.

You are correct.

Coldwater has been in 4 finals (1998,2000,2005,2007), winning twice (2005 and 2007).

Catholic schools "recruit" as much as public schools. Kids go to the parochial schools the same reason they go to Ironton, bait.

Tradition, coaching, fan base, etc. Plus, you get one HECK of an education at a lot of those schools.
