Marching Band or Concert Band?

Post by techwired09 »

I know that a lot of bands do their halftime shows with concert instruments, such as tubas, and percussion having chimes. Logan band does not do that, and most of us don't see the reason why. If you do it, why? and do you like it? If not, would you want to?

Logan is not a competition band. Most bands that have all of this equipment on the sidelines are called corp style bands.

Logan is what I would call a Big Ten style marching band. What they do, they do very well and I for one enjoy it a lot but, they could not take those shows to competition and do well. Having said that, I also would guess that this is the reason they have such high numbers in membership. They are by far the largest band in the SE Ohio region. I thik kids enjoy this style of marching because it is a lot more fun.

I also like the corp style bands. Some of the things that these kids are able to do is amazing. Athens Marching Band was incredible last year. I haven't seen them yet this year but have heard they are very good.

I do have to say that I think the band could do quite well at a competition, our only fault would be difficulty with our drill. The reason being that we do try to create 4 different half-time shows each year. This obviously makes us not as good if you look at perfection, but it is quite impressive. LHS Band puts in a lot of time and hard work.

I was afraid that someone would take it that way. Believe me when I tell you Logan;s band is very good. Unfortunately, contests today are TOO focused on things that are happening in DCI (Drum Corp International) and bands like Logan are not rewarded for what they do. Personally, I think it is not fair but I know this to be a fact.

I went to a conference for judges and every judge there said they did not know how to judge majorettes. They didn't understand what a finger twirl was (not that I do either) but my comment to them was that if all the twirlers are doing it the same way then that is how I would judge it.

Please understand, I am not taking anything away from Logan. They have a fantastic program that is hugely successful and every kid in that band should be proud to be a part of something that special. I know when I watch them coming down the street at the Parade of the Hills it is quite a site indeed.

Well all the Logan Band members will thank you for that comment.
Can't wait to see everyone's bands at the Festival of the Bands on Saturday!

Logan puts on the best competition of the year. It is so much fun, the kids have a blast. Unfortunately no fire extinguishers this year with the new turf. I cant wait to see the stadium. I have driven by it and it looks awesome. Your school is great also. I hope you didn;t take my comment wrong about The Chieftans. They really are phenomenal. I love it when Nelsonville TV Cable shows them at halftime when they used to do Logan games.

If you can't march with the instrument it shouldn't be on the field and if you can't carry it don't call yourself a marching band. If you have to drive the instruments on the field you are a walking band. I applaud the Logan Band. I have heard they create four shows a season versus one show for the other schools.

I would agree that bands have gottne out of control with what goes on the field. But, they are to be applauded also. Remember, those are our kids out there on the field. I went to a contest yesterday at Ohio State and was happily suprised to see festival bands there. These are bands that do not compete for a rating but rather put on a show that entertains and pumps up the crowd. I wish Logan had been there. I was thinking about my comments on here and to be honest I had never been to a show like this.

Logan would have been perfect there. It was fun to see the high stepping bands come out and entertain us. God knows I needed after sitting through the avant garde shows all day.

The funny thing was, the crowd responded to the festival bands more than they did the contest bands. I hope in the future Logan thinks about going here. It is quite an experience to play and march at the Horse Shoe.

I really wanted to be in Logan watching the Festival but had to stay behind in C-bus. It was fun and I did get to go and watch some of the bands from the skybox. That was amazing. I heard that the Logan Festival was a blast.
