Trimble played Nelsonville every year starting in 1970. That would be 39 games tying them for second

Trimble is tied for second with Belpre, having played each year since 1970. NY is 25-12-2 all-time against Trimble. Every year that Belpre has been on the NY schedule, Trimble has been there as well. The difference being only the games between 1978-1992 were TVC league games with Trimble. Between 1980-1992, the game was the Week 10 match-up between the two schools. When Trimble wins this game, it is nearly always a close contest. NY's wins are more often than not blowouts. 9 out of the 12 wins for Trimble were by 10 points or less. The Trimble wins by more than 10 points were: '70, '80, and '85.

We are now down to fourth place on the countdown........any guesses?

We are slowly getting to Athens, but the Bulldogs are not fourth or fifth. Reason being that between 1970-1982, the Buckeyes and Bulldogs did not play each other. The non-league series resumed in 1983, the first game since the Buckeyes left the SEOAL after the '69 season.

However, if you took into account the old Nelsonville Greyhounds and the NY Buckeyes combined, Athens would be the number one opponent of all-time. They have played each other since the beginning of organized high school sports except for the years 1970-1982. Unless you count Pomeroy/Middleport/Meigs combined, that would be more games since Pomeroy and Middleport were both league games for the old Nelsonville Greyhounds, meaning two games each year, to Athens' one game. I don't know if the Greyhounds played The Plains and Chauncey-Dover enough to overcome that difference. The Plains and Chauncey-Dover were the two non-league rivals for the Greyhounds in most years. But that was basicly half of the old Greyhounds schedule right there.....Pomeroy, Middleport, Athens, The Plains, and Chauncey-Dover. Plus, Jackson, Logan, Gallia Academy, and Wellston. Back then, it was a 9 game season for the Greyhounds in most seasons from what I have gathered so far. But again, I am NOT including the games for the old Greyhounds in the list - only games since becoming Nelsonville-York.

I will give you all a hint......4th, 5th, and the two teams tied for 6th all-time are current TVC OHIO rivals. No current league rival is below 6th place on the all-time list.

Impressive. 10 out of 12 in terms of rankings. You are off on the number of games played for each though from 4-12.

Fourth place goes to the Alexander Spartans. NY and Alex have played each other 37 times, every season since 1972. This is the infamous undefeated streak for the Buckeyes. NY leads the all-time series 36-0-1. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in '74, and that tie is the closest taste of victory Alexander has had against NY. NY has scored at least 40 points in 18 of the 37 games, all of which have happened in the last 30 games of the series. The first seven games of the series were not as high scoring. This was a league game in the old unified TVC from '74 - '92. It then became a non-league game for four years when Alex was in the Hocking Division. When Alex switched over to the Ohio Division in '97, it once again became a league game, which is still the case today.

10 out of 12! Not bad.

I can't do any better. But if I had to guess, I would switch Wellston with Athens on my list.

Fifth place goes to the Wellston Golden Rockets, with 36 games played. NY is 27-9 all-time against Wellston. This rivalry originated with the Nelsonville Greyhounds in the 1920's. When NY consolidated in '67, the Buckeyes and Golden Rockets played three league games in the SEOAL. The two teams did not play for the five year period between the '70 and '74 seasons. The two then played seven non-league games between the '75 and '81 seasons when NY was a member of the TVC and Wellston was still a member of the SEOAL. Wellston then joined the TVC in '82 and the teams have met as a TVC league game every year since, with the exception of '91.

In '91, Wellston thought it was going to have to cut its sports programs because of lack of funding. Wellston called off all of it's games that year, but at the last minute, had enough funding afterall. However, most teams had already committed to playing other schools by that point, so Wellston had a random schedule in '91. NY replaced Wellston with Columbus Bishop Ready on the schedule that year and pulled off a huge win over Bishop Ready.

Obviously, if the old Nelsonville Greyhounds were included in these statistics, Wellston would be near the very top in terms of total number of games played.

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games
2T. Trimble - 39 games
4. Alexander - 37 games
5. Wellston - 36 games

Thanks for the Greyhounds statistics Jottings.

Gallia Academy is the only former SEOAL league rival that NY has not played since leaving the SEOAL. I have often wondered how the two teams would have matched up over the last 40 years. The series ended a few years before NY turned around its football program, and the two schools never had a chance to play since the turnaround. I think this would be an interesting non-league matchup in the future, even it was only for a couple years.

Moving on to sixth place on the all-time list, there are two teams tied with 29 games played each. The first team is the Athens Bulldogs. NY leads the all-time series 18-11. The first three games played were SEOAL league games for the '67, '68, and '69 seasons. Between 1970 and 1982, the two teams never played each other. The series resumed in 1983 as a non-league game with the winning team receiving the Doc Kroner Trophy each season since. Starting with the 2008 game, this became a league game once more in the TVC Ohio. During the 25 games of the non-league matchups between 1983 and 2007, the Buckeyes and Bulldogs played each other in the opening week of each season 23 of those 25 year. In '87, and '88, NY and Athens met each other in Week 10 instead of Week 1.

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games

Also tied for sixth place on the all-time list is the Meigs Marauders. The history of NY vs. Meigs is very similar to that of NY vs. Athens. In fact, not only are Meigs and Athens tied for sixth on the all-time list, they have played NY in the exact same years as each other! NY vs. Meigs was a SEOAL league game in '67, '68, and '69. The two teams never played each other from 1970-1982. In 1983, Meigs joined the TVC and this has been a league contest every year since. The results of the games are almost identical with Athens as well. NY leads the all-time series with Meigs 17-12.

So Meigs and Athens have played NY in the exact same years as each other, and the only difference is that Meigs has one more victory over NY than Athens in the all-time series. Meigs actually won the first 9 games played against NY, and NY has won 17 out of the last 20 games played.

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games
2T. Trimble - 39 games
4. Alexander - 37 games
5. Wellston - 36 games
6T. Athens - 29 games
6T. Meigs - 29 games

You are right! (Miller and Warren are actually tied for 10th place). I am going to provide statistical info. for these remaining teams today and tomorrow and then on Tuesday I'll have a brand new trivia question.
