70% of Americans now consider divorce to be "morally acceptable," the highest percentage ever to hold that view. In 2001, only 59% considered divorce acceptable.

Americans are not expecting any relief at the gas pump. Indeed, 86% say they expect gas prices, now averaging over $4.00 a gallon, to top at $5.00 a gallon sometime this year. One year ago, only 28% thought it possible that gas would hit that mark.

Most Americans favor changing federal regulations to permit oil drilling off the coast of California, Florida, and other states. 67% support oil explortation off the coasts while 15% oppose it and 15% are undecided. 64% think that if offshore drilling is allowed, gas prices will go down.

Nearly half of all Americans say race relations in the country are in bad shape, and three in 10 acknowledge personal feelings of racial prejudice. While 60% of blacks say the election of Barack Obama would help race relations, only 38% of whites hold that view.

73% of Americans agree with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of individuals to own guns. Yet just 11% want gun laws to be less strict than they are now, while 49% want strickter gun laws.

Americans are more far more likely to have tired marijuana or cocaine than people in 16 other countries surveyed, including the Netherlands,France, and Colombia. 42% of Americans say they have tried marijuana at least once,while 16% have tried cocaine. In the Netherlands, which has far more lenient drug laws, only 20% had tried pot.

People are more willing to talk about their sex lives than about finances. 81% said they are reluctant to talk about credit card debt with someone they recently met, compared with 78% who will not talk about intimate relationships and 58% who won't discuss health problems.

Americans who live in the Western U.S. are less likely to believe in God than those living elsewhere.86% of Southeeners say they believe in God, compared to 83% in the Midwest, 80% in the ears, and 59% in the West.
