Chillicothe tops Gallipolis, 33-21

Second place Chillicothe downed host Gallipolis 33-21 in a low-scoring Southeastern Ohio Athletic League makeup game Monday evening on the Gallia Academy hardwood in Centenary.

The triumph left the Cavs with a 10-5 season record and 9-2 SEOAL mark. Gallipolis dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-8 inside the league.

Gallipolis, weather permitting, will host Jackson Tuesday evening in another SEOAL tripleheader. Chillicothe will travel to Logan.

Chillicothe’s defense held GAHS scoreless the first 6:21 of play in the initial period until Jarod Golden’s tapin with 1:39 left. Chuck Calvart’s goal with 59 seconds left in the quarter cut Chillicothe’s lead to 7-4.

John Troester’s jump shot (7:21) cut the Cavs lead to 7-6 to start second quarter play but goals by Mike Turner and Jalen Ragland gave CHS a 11-6 lead with 4:46 left in the half.

Troester hit a three-pointer (4:07) then Malik London’s goal put CHS on top 13-9 at the 3:41 mark. Corey Eberhard’s trey pulled GAHS within one, 13-12 at the 3:28 mark, but CHS ended the period with a four-point run to take a 17-12 first half lead.

Chillicothe actually put the game away in the third stanza by outscoring Gallia Academy, 10-2, to take a 27-14 lead into the final period. Calvart’s short jumper (1:37) was the only Blue Devil goal in the quarter. London had two goals and Turner three for CHS.

Nick Mitchell’s two free throws (7:52) and Ethan Moore's layup (7:11) cut Chillicothe’s lead to 27-18, and later, Golden’s short jumper (3:45) pulled GAHS within eight, 29-21, but the Cavs outscored GAHS 4-0 during the final 2:10 of play to earn the victory.

Turner paced CHS in scoring with 14 points. Malik London added seven points and Ragland six. For GAHS, Troester was tops with five points. Golden and Calvart added four each while Mitchell and Eberhard each had three points.

Gallipolis was eight of 32 from the field for 25 percent. Gallipolis was two of 12 behind the arc. The Gallians were three of six at the line for 50 percent. GAHS had 22 rebounds, six each by Golden and Troester. GAHS had 15 personals and 15 turnovers.

Gallipolis’ freshmen rallied from a 32-18 deficit in the second half to down the CHS yearlings, 37-35. Jim Clagg’s layup with 1:30 left put the Gallians up 35-33, and his foul shots with .02 left clinched the triumph.

Chillicothe led 32-18 with 5:22 left to play in the game, but GAHS outscored the visitors 19-5 to post its 11th victory against five setbacks. Chillicothe dropped to 7-5 on the year.

I would imagine that's the score Oz was looking for, just on the other end of it.

I don't think that you can win many ballgames shooting 25% from the field.

GAHS had no answer to the Cavs half court press... We spent all our energy just getting across mid court.... Then we forced a lot of shots..... The Cavs missed a ton of open shots in the first half.... Could have been very ugly at halftime on a better shooting night by the Cavs..... The Cavs were bigger,Taller, faster & stronger...... We just got beat by a better team, no shame in that......

I would think a low scoring game like that would be hard to watch. lol My first impression was they met up for a football scrimmage.

It will never happen, but this game is a perfect example of why the high school game needs a shot clock.

I agree......few others do but I just don't see a problem with a 45-50 seconds shot clock

Shot clock would not have helped the low score in this game. Poor shooting really by both squads, difference was in the offensive rebounds by the Cavs.

I agree 100% with that !!

I also will never understand the "let'em play" crowd that invariably comes on here after a game (especially after a loss) and complains that the stinkin' officials let the game get "outa hand". When officiating gets mostly subjective, that's what happens every time. Those same people say that the game would be nothing but a foul shooting contest if the refs called them as they see them. If that's the case, go back 30 years ago when they DID call the games tighter (by the rules) and you will see that there were no more players "fouling out" then than there are today. Once the players learn that the refs are going to call them, they learn quickly to stop committing them and you will get a much more fairly called ball game. IMO

gahs4ever wrote:I doubt it. Scores back in the 20s, 30s and 40s were routinely played in the 20s and 30s. But I cant remember anyone in this area held that low in years. South Webster people will remember a Holgate team in the final four that won games like this routinely. In fact, when Aldridge was a soph, Webster held Holgate scoreless for an entire quarter and Holgate came back to win the game 31-28. Here is the championship game result:

its a challenge to put that ball in the hoop
