A few stats from WIRO.

Wheelersburg......10 - 3 - 15 - 18 - 12 = 58
Ironton..............4 - 11 - 15 - 16 - 7 = 53

Burg
Stegman...23, (21 in 2nd half)
Criagmiles...17 (5 3ptr's)
Miller...8
Shankweiler...7
Whitely...2
Ward...1
Sht...? (no stats given)
3ptr's...8 (didn't give amount taken)
FT...11/25, 44% (this has got to improve)
REB...? (no stats given)
TO's...18

Ironton
Greene...18
Sweigert...10
Waginger...8
Morris...8
Koch?...5
Eliott...2
SHT...? )no stats given)
3ptrs...2 (didn't give amount taken)
FT...7/14, 50%
Reb...? (no stats given)
TO's...17

Big win for the Pirates, but they have got to get better at the FT line. They could have put this game away early in the OT if they hit their FT's. Still a good solid win by the boys after falling behind by 8 points in the 3rd quarter and battling back to get the win.

Congrats to the Pirates on the win...you guys played hard and fought back and deserve the win.....The comment about they could have put this game away early in the OT if they had hit their FT's could be said for the Tigers as well....if the Tigers had hit their foul shots in regulation there would not have been a need for OT.....but we know how big that little word if is.....

Keep your heads up Tigers......get well Mike Lamb...sure did miss you tonight....also Tigers need to work on those foul shots....that has been a big weakness for a long time....

Once again congrats to the Pirates......

Good to see Trojan Dave and one of my former students who is now a Pirate....

I agree Rhiannon. It seemed like neither team wanted to win the way they were shooting their FT's tonight. Ironton shoots 50% and the Burg shoots 44% and I think the Pirates missed 8 in the OT and Ironton missed 2 that could have won it in regulation.

I'm sure both squads will be working on that a lot more in practice this week.

Amen to that Burg_Grad_77....It seems even the college teams struggle with foul shots..

Once again congrats to your Pirates....

Good job Pirates. I knew Barrick would have this team winning big games. I just thought it would take a little longer then this. Man I wish Lang was healthy.

You can never count out a Tom Barrick-coached team in ANY ball game. He always has his players believing they can win IF they play as hard as they can.

It always kills me to see a guy consistently hit a 20 to 22 jumper with someone draped all over him, but then struggle at the FT line with no one even close to him.

Nothing new here, the Burg is usually not a good shooting team. I don't know if they work on other things all week and it shows in shooting percentage. It seems if they worked as much on offense as they do on defense they should be better than they are. ANYWAY A WIN IS A WIN.

I can GUARANTEE you that Wheelersburg works on shooting, especially foul shooting, EVERY practice. Each player will shoot anywhere from 15-20 fouls shots during various periods of practice, plus on many days you must make 20 or more (with a certain pct.) at the end of practice before you can leave.

I would disagree that Wheelersburg doesn't work on offense. There is A LOT more to offense besides shooting!! Look over the past 15 years at Wheelersburg's possession scoring pct. and you will see that is very high (they work extremely hard on getting second and third chances). That is the key stat.

Guys how many times have we seen foul shots win and lose games? Its just like kicking in football around here, win or lose by 1 or 2. It's like nobody practices it, but we do. You hear coaches say we shot hundreds but it does not show in games. It looks like we are going to have 3 good schools to follow this year up to and during tournament.

This is a young Burg team that is working on many things and will get to the offense. I think they are doing really fine for just having 1 player having minutes played in varsity level. I seen the same you did as just standing around at times or more on one side of the court, but it will come and when it does Burg will be a fine ball club. If you can box out and play team ball while shooting making baskets you can stay in a game with anybody

They did not get a lot of points off of offensive rebounds tonight but got enough (~7-9 points). Ironton had nearly double Wheelersburg's offensive rebounds and had at least 15 points off offensive rebounds. But the Pirates worked hard on taking good shots in the second half and it showed. After they shot 36% in the first quarter, 14% in the second quarter, they then shot from the field: 50% in the third quarter, 83% in the fourth quarter and 67% in overtime.

The Pirates were 5/5 on 3-point shots in the fourth quarter and overtime combined and hit 8 of 18 overall.
Oddly enough, the Pirates shot better from 2-point and 3-point range than they did from the free throw line.

Free throws were only 10/25 (40%). Ironton was 7/14 (50%) from the line.

Wheelersburg led by as much as seven and Ironton twice led by eight but both struggled to substained it.

While Wheelersburg had slightly more turnovers than Ironton, they had none in the overtime which was key to that period.

Watched the game with biggdowgg, FIDO, pfloyd, Ironmike, and got to chat with Rhiannon and Amen Corner.

I thought both teams played very good defense, and both teams could have won the game in regulation with better free throw shooting.........Tyler Craigmiles came up big for the Burg with 5 three pointers.......several of them late in the 4th quarter with Ironton trying to protect a 6-8 point lead.........

Very slow start to the game offensively............big win for the Burg as they continue their road trip............

... "the game that no one wanted to win" - neither team wanted to put us (the cheap seat guys) out of our misery ... a combined 18 for 40 from the line ?!! I'town hits just ONE more in regulation - Tigers get the "W" ... Wheelersburg should have opted to let Tyler Craigmiles shoot ALL of their 16 FTs in overtime from behind the arc - Burg wins by 20+!!! ... I thought we were still watching the half time shooting challenge when either team went to the line ... bottomline IF either one of these 2 teams are going to advance in the Survive and Advance Season the FT shooting has to improve ... okay now that I have gotten that off my chest LOL ...

... BOTH teams played outstanding defense (most of the game) ... Ironton did a great job pressuring the ball, tripling up on Stegman every time he even "looked like" he was going to get a touch ... probably one of the quickest teams I have seen so far this season ... when the offense catches up with the defense in the same game ???!!!! "I pity da team!!! (they are playing)" ... I'town had 4 players in double figures (Green/Morris/Schweickart/Waginger) ... foul trouble hurt the Tigers with Kochendoefer getting in early foul trouble - seemed to take him out of his game offensively (couldn't take the ball to the rim) ...

... Wheelersburg ... can we just come out and say it - Coach Barrick IS one of IF not THE best coach in Southern Ohio ... the Burg doesn't have the best talent this year - yet ( the boyz are youngsters at the varsity level right now) ... Coach Barrick has the Pirates playing solid offensively ... they control the tempo of the game by having every possession going through Stegman ... good team defense - again nothing special just fundamentally solid - and yet they put enough pressure on the opponent to take them away from spots on the floor they want to get to ... Coach Barrick's TEAM will/does keep themselves "in the game" bringing in the clock as an ally ... making the game a "final" possession(s) type game - advantage Wheelersburg with Craigmiles on the perimeter(5 treys)/Stegman in the paint and on the baseline (23 points) ... will the Pirates win out - probably not BUT they WILL BE in any game the play with Coach Barrick court side ...

... lastly - it was great to meet up with the Portsmouth contingent - biggdowgg, trojandave, FIDO ... a pleasure to meet Alabama Mike, Ironmike, ... tigertownturkey - when I first started doing all of this I DID keep stuff on napkins lol , but as you posted I had to go to "the BIG napkin" especially for a game like the one last night - had they been napkins I might have thrown them away in the first quarter - slooooooooowwwwwww start ... it was also good to see Coach Davis from Chesapeake - keep up the great job with those Panthers coach so far outstanding stuff coming from the 'peake this season ...

Wheelersburg usually does shoot free throws better. Their lowest game percentage as a team this year has been 59%. vs. the 10/25 yesterday (40%)--that should have been 5-7 more points on their usual shooting-- remembering that they missed 3 front ends of one-and-ones. Prior to this game, for the season, the only varsity player shooting less than 50% was Craigmiles at 2/5. He shoots 3-pointers at about the same percentage. ;) Andy Stegman is the best at free throw shooting but he is the only player with varsity experience and he gets to take a lot (27/36). He was only 7/10 last night and is usually more an 80% shooter. The rest of the team (usually >50%) was 3/15 (20%).

But as a group, they need to do better on free throws. I cannot doubt that they and the coaching staff are aware of that. Although a junior, Craigmiles did not play basketball last year and he is in a catch-up mode on his shooting. As a whole, this group is very young and inexperienced, though athletic, and are trying to learn many things at one time. I have confidence that they will continue to work on this aspect and will improve.

I thought we played the worst game of the season so far. I've never seen our guys that cold. I'm glad we got it out of our system. Also, it would've been nice to see Lamb in the game to help out w/ Stegman. That would allow us to guard the perimeter better. I doubt anybody will get that hot from 3 land than what we saw last night. That dude was on fire. Granted we still should've won even as bad as we played. Wheelersburg has 1 guy that could crack our starting lineup but they played great team ball and are well coached and hustled to make up for a lack of other things. I hope and pray that we can meet up again at the Convo.

Last night was a big win for the young Pirates. No, it was not pretty from the free throw line but an ugly win is better than a pretty loss any day of the week.

It was good to talk with fido, pink floyd and biggdowgg. The other guys showed up after I had to leave the cheap seats.
