Game 8

The Vinton County Vikings and the Southeastern Panthers are neighbors; the schools are separated by 24 miles. The two schools share family, friends and a mutual respect for each other. So when the Vikings and Panthers get together it is more like a reunion than a heated rivalry.

However, each team wants to win and this year battle pitted the defending Tri Valley Conference champions against the defending Scioto Valley Conference champions. That was last season; like cousins at a family reunion each team played hard. It was the Vikings that were able to withstand the onslaught of the Panthers and come away from Larry Jordan Gymnasium with a 70-44 victory.

In the first quarter the Vikings were able to take a first quarter lead 15-9 and never looked back. The Panthers were not for the lack of trying as they were trying to score through attrition has they were able to put up 17 shots in the quarter.

In the second quarter the Vikings were scoring despite senior Ryan Stewart inability to get a three pointer to fall as he was 0-6 from the arc. His counterpart senior Andrew Eberts knocked down his open looks which allow senior Dustin Guthrie to get free from the double teams and score 14 points before half.

The Panthers were making things interesting shooting 30 shots most coming from 13 offensive rebounds they had in the first half. The Vikings saving grace was that the Panthers shot eight percent from the field and had four points in the second quarter. The Vikings led at the intermission 26-13.

After the half, Stewart was finding his range has he was 3 of 4 from the arc in the third quarter which helped the Vikings extended their lead to 21 points, 49-28.

In the final stanza, Stewart quickly connected on three more three pointers. He finished the game, after missing his first six, with a respectable 6 of 13 from the arc. He scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half to pace all players. Eberts added eleven points including three triples of his own. Guthrie finished with 18 points. Sophomore Steven Thompson recorded his first varsity points with a triple of his own in the final minutes.

The Vikings offensive output can also be attributed to the play of point guard Andy Grillo. The young sophomore handed out eight assists and stole four steals.

“We have a very unselfish group,” said Vinton County head coach Matt Combs. “We try to establish good inside-out balance, and I thought we were able to first establish Dustin (Guthrie) in the first half which led to some better perimeter opportunities for Ryan (Stewart) and Andrew (Eberts) in the second half.”

The 70-44 victory gives the Vikings an unblemished mark in eight tries. The Panthers fall to 1-9.

Game 9

Josh Kellough, who was the Scioto Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2006-07 scored 25 points and twin brother Justin had 24 to lead Huntington to a 61-57 win over Vinton County on Friday in a boys non-league basketball game.

The game between these two teams was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Ohio University Convocation Center. But due to inclement weather the contest was postponed.

The win by Huntington also snapped Vinton County's a 33-game winning during the regular season, as the Vikings was ice cold offensively in the first half.

Vinton County (8-1) fell behind early when (Josh) Kellough made 5 of 7 shots from the field in the first quarter to score 11 of his team 16 points. The Vikings were cold shooting 4 of 13 from the field and were only able to match Kellough's effort, 11.

From there it went from frigid to freezing; the Vikings continued their cold shooting and were only able to scrape together nine points in the second quarter. The usually reliable senior guards of the Vikings, Andrew Eberts and Ryan Stewart had only three points between them. The Huntsmen and the Kellough Twins managed to race out to a 13 point lead, Huntington had a 33-20 advantage at halftime.

"You can't spot a good team like Huntington a 13 point advantage in the first half and expect to win," said a dejected Vinton County head coach Matt Combs after the game. "But I am really proud of our kids. We battled back in the second half."

As cold as the Vikings were in the first half, they were as hot at the start of the third quarter. The Vikings took control in the third quarter behind three 3-pointer's by Andrew Eberts to outscore Huntington 16-2 and take their first lead of the contest at 36-35.

"We talked about cutting the lead in half coming out in the third quarter, not trying to all back at once." Combs said. "Runs like that will wear you down, and we spent a lot of energy doing it."

However, Vinton County trailed 43-40 going into the eight-minutes of the contest.

In the fourth quarter, Justin Kellough stepped up scoring 10 of his 24 points to help seal the win for the Huntsmen.

However, the Vikings leading 49-48 with 3:33 left in the game, when sophomore Andy Grillo left the game after suffering an injury. When he returned, Vinton County trailed by five at 55-50.

"My biggest concern as a coach now is how will we handle losing. We haven't lost in a long time. It was going to come to an end eventually," Combs said. "We're going to get better from this. Right now it hurts, but we'll find a way to make us better."

Game 10

The Vinton County Vikings hosted the Jackson Ironmen on Saturday. The Vikings were looking to rebound from a heart-wrenching lost, 61-57, from the previous night against the Huntington Huntsmen. The Ironmen also tasted defeat on Thursday, 74-43, when Jackson alum Mike Stevens brought his Kings Mill Knights home for the holidays.

In this battle of friends and neighbors something had to give.

It would be the Vikings and their All-Ohioian senior Dustin Guthrie proved to be too much for the Ironmen. They together handed the Ironmen their eighth loss with an 80-46 victory.

“Obviously, our kids don’t like to lose. We want it to upset us, but at the same time, you can’t let it devastate you either,” said head coach Matt Combs. “We talked about coping with it. We lost. We lost to a really good team in Huntington who just outplayed us for enough of that game to beat us. Sometimes, you can learn from a loss just the same as you do a lot of wins. It was going to say a lot about us, one way or the other, how we handled that adversity. I thought our kids showed what they are made of.”

The Ironmen got on the scoreboard first with an Andy Beuscher three pointer. The Vikings then went to the races, as they score and score often, outscoring the Ironmen 28-11 in the first quarter. Senior Dustin Guthrie paced the Vikings with nine points in the quarter.

The senior post again paced the Vikings in the second quarter with seven points, converting two “and ones” plays as the Ironmen had trouble matching the 6’5” Guthrie. He finished the half with 16 of his game high 20 points.

The Vikings led at the half by a score of 49-26.

After the intermission, the Vikings slowing down and allowing reserves to gain needed experience, managed only to post 12 points. However, the Ironmen posted only five points themselves.

“We got a lot of guys in the game, especially early, and they all contributed well,” said Combs. “I really thought our effort was great and that’s the thing I was looking for after that loss. Our kids were really fired up and ready to play.”

The Vikings (9-1) were able to close out the game as 11 of 12 Vikings scored with a 19-15 advantage for the 80-46 win over the Ironmen (2-8.

Besides his 20 points Guthrie grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out three assists and helped the Vikings with the 45-19 rebounding edge. However, the Ironmen won the turnover battle 25-21.

The Vikings will be back in action this Friday when they will travel to Meigs.

Game 11

Relying on the overpowering inside scoring of Dustin Guthrie, the Vinton County Vikings remaining unbeaten in the Tri-Valley Conference's Ohio Division with a 69-57 manhandling of the host Meigs Marauders.

The final score was deceiving as the Vikings were leading by 27 points after three quarters before the Marauders cut 15 points off the lead in the final quarter.

The road win improved the Vikings to 10-1 overall and kept them perfect in TVC-Ohio standings with a 4-0 record. Meigs, meanwhile, fell to 3-6 overall.

Guthrie, a 6-5 senior center, used his size and ability advantages to good measure as he notched 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against a Marauder team that had no answer for him.

Aware of the mismatch and with a mind to take advantage of it, the Vikings fed the ball early and often in the low blocks to Guthrie who scored 14 first-quarter points, propelling Vinton County to a 26-7 lead after just one quarter. The outcome was basically decided in those first eight minutes.

Vinton County increased its lead to 38-15 at halftime and to 55-28 at the three-quarters stop. Meigs outscored the Vikings 29-15 in the final quarter, but the turnaround came with the Meigs starter relentlessly pressing the Vikings' subs.

Vinton County connected on 28 of 68 shots from the field, including 3 of 13 three-point shots, but its big advantage came in the rebounding department as the Vikings snatched 43 rebounds to only 24 for the hosts.

Other than Guthrie, Jake Prater was the only Viking to achieve double figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds. Ryan Stewart scored nine points on a trio of treys. Dylan Guthrie, Ethan Allen and Michael Dixon all chipped in with six points off the bench. Dylan also had eight rebounds.

Coach Combs was pleased with his team's excellent start and attributed that to the players being focused and ready to play. The Vikings also responded well to the challenge of playing without guard Andrew Eberts, who was sidelined with a minor ankle injury.

Clay Bolin led the Marauders with 14 points with Damian Wise and Jacob Well adding 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Coach John Royster's Viking JV team remained unbeaten (11-0) with a 47-30 win over the Marauders. Brandon Clark led the VC scoring column with 11 points.

Game 12

The Vinton County Vikings limped into Waverly Saturday evening for a non-conference match-up.

The Vikings feeling the effects of a conference road win the night before, a starting guard with a foot injury and two varsity players battling the flu bug.

The Vikings picked up a 69-57 victory over the Meigs Marauders on Friday night, without the services of senior starting guard Andrew Eberts who was sideline with an Achilles sprain.

The only difference on Saturday night against the Tigers was that the Guthrie brothers; Dustin and Dylan, were battling flu like symptoms.

Despite the aches and ailments the Vikings came away with a 52-39 victory over the host Tigers.

For a second night in row the Vikings played without Eberts, which cause the Vikings to get bigger contributions from others. “I can’t say enough about how hard our kids played tonight,” said Vinton County head coach Matt Combs. “Playing two tough road games this weekend without Andrew really forced some guys to take on some bigger roles, and I thought we really had some guys step up and play well.”

And they did.

Sophomore Ethan Allen came off the bench and provided a spark early; grabbing an offensive rebound, two steals and a block shot which lead to Vikings scores. Senior Ben Batey caused two Waverly turnovers that lead to Viking scores. Senior Michael Dixon and sophomore Taylor Reed provided much rest to Dustin Guthrie and Andy Grillo respectfully in the early minutes of the game.

The Vikings opened the first quarter with a 16-15 lead on the strength of senior Ryan Stewart who had ten of his 13 points that including two three pointers.

However, it was the Vikings defense that shines in the second quarter allowing only four points to the Tigers. It was the defensive play of Allen, Batey and Guthrie on the defensive glass that held the Tigers in check. The Vikings held a nine point advantage at the half, 28-19.

All-Ohioian senior Dustin Guthrie, battling flu like symptoms earlier in the day was obviously ailing. However, it did not keep him from getting his double/double, 20 points and 10 rebounds. He threw in three blocks for good measure.

Coming out at halftime, the Tigers got a quick score by their senior standout Trevor Walls to cut the Vikings lead to seven. But Stewart hit his third three, Guthrie with an offensive rebound and put back and a Grillo steal and lay-up to give the Vikings their biggest lead of the game, 14, the score was 35-21.

At the end of the third, it was a 42-32 Vinton County lead.

The Tigers would not go away, clawing their way on a few runs of their own. But Guthrie and junior Jake Prater who grabbed two offensive rebounds and scored four points in the quarter to help keep the Tigers at double digit length.

The Vikings maintained a thirteen point advantage for the victory, 52-39.
The Tigers were led by Walls with 13 points and freshman Harrison Martin with ten points.

The win gives Vinton County an 11-1 overall record and will put their perfect conference record (4-0) to the test this Friday when they will travel south on 93 to visit Wellston.

“We just have to keep getting better,” said Combs when asked of his upcoming schedule. “I feel like we have a great group of competitors on this team, and it is important that we continue to practice well and get ready for next Friday.”

Vinton County – 16 – 12 – 14 – 10 – 52
Waverly – 15 – 4 – 12 – 7 – 39

Vinton County: Andy Grillo 2- 1-2-5, Ryan Stewart 5-0-0-13, Ethan Allen 1-0-2-2, Ben Batey 3-2-4-8, Dustin Guthrie 6-7-8-20, and Jake Prater 2-0-0-4. (3pt Goals; Stewart 3, Guthrie)

Waverly: Trevor Arnett 1-0-0-2, Ramone Conley 4-0-0-9, Derek Roback 2-0-0-5, Trevor Walls 6-1-5-13, and Harrison Martin 5-0-0-10. (3pt Goals; Conley and Roback)

Game 13

From my buddy, Todd Compston at The Telegram.

The Vinton County Vikings dominated inside, outrebounding the undersized Wellston Golden Rockets 39-22 and made 32-of-59 shot attempts from the floor.

Wellston head coach Jim Derrow, now in his 22nd season at the school, knew going in that it would be a tough road to travel, but he couldn't have expected a game like Friday night's.

The Vikings (12-1, 5-0 TVC Ohio) shot lights out for the game, winning 77-45 over its rival in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division boys basketball game at Wellston High School.

The Rockets (3-10, 1-4) was just 2-of-12 (16.6 percent) from the field to start the contest and made just six field goals in the first half to trail 45-15 at halftime.

Sophomore Jeff Matteson, who led the Rockets with a team-high 15 points for the game and seven rebounds, had just three-points in the first half.

Vinton County took a 4-0 advantage to start the game and kept the lead throughout.

Leading 6-2, the Vikings capitalized on seven turnovers by the Rockets and went on a 13-0 run, before Wellston's Slone Cales connected on a NBA range three-pointer to pull Wellston within 19-5.

But the Vikings followed with three consecutive baskets, capped by Michael Dixon's rebound basket at the end of the first quarter to take an insurmountable 25-5 lead.

Wellston was only 6-for-25 from the field in the first half, including 2-of-8 from three-point range.

Meanwhile, senior Dustin Guthrie, who paced the Vikings, scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first half. Also, senior Andrew Eberts showed off his skill on the perimeter with 15 points in the first half.

Eberts was an impressive 7-for-8 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from three-point range to finish the game with 18 points for Vinton County. Junior Jake Prater chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Andy Grillo, Ryan Stewart and Michael Dixon added five points each.

The Vikings led 51-25 midway through the third quarter and went on to outscore Wellston 13-3 down the stretch to push their lead to 64-28 by the end of the period.

Matteson was the only player that scored in double-digits for the Rockets with 15, while Slone Cales added seven and, Aaron Jackson, Cody Wilkett and Ryan Darnell had six points apiece.

Vinton County was 5-for-10 from three-point range and shot 54.2 percent from the field.

The Rockets, though, made six three-pointers but shot just 31.4 percent from the floor. They were also just 5-for-11 from the free throw line on the night, while Vinton County made just 8-of-19.

Wellston will host Alexander on Tuesday, Jan. 15, while the Vikings will return home to host Nelsonville-York.

Game 14

The Vinton County Vikings (13-1 overall, 6-0 in TVC Ohio Division play) were smoking Friday night and the offensive production was at all-time high.

The Vikings broke the century mark and routed the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes by a score of 103-48 on the home court in the Tri-Valley Conference, Ohio Division encounter. As a matter of fact, the Vikings' offensive effort tied a school record for scoring. The Vikings tied a record set in 1968 and 1994 both against Meigs.

The Vikings, led by head coach Matt Combs, are making a strong bid to get a high seed at the upcoming tournament draw that will be held a week from Sunday at Jackson High School.

Directing the offensive wheel for Vinton County was Dustin Guthrie who for the fifth consecutive game, broke the 20-point barrier with a 25-point effort. Guthrie certainly was not alone as being an offensive threat as Ryan Stewart added 21, Andrew Eberts 15, Jake Prater 14 and Dylan Guthrie 12 to constitute the double-digit scorers for the winners.

Although it turned out to be a lopsided win for the Vikings, the Buckeyes had some early hopes in the first half. Nelsonville took an early lead with a 5-0 lead until Guthrie scored to make it 5-2. Nelsonsville York's Michael Barrick sank a three-point shot to make the score 8-2.

But from there, Vinton County began a comeback and sprinted out to a 25-13 run to take a 27-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was a lead the Vikings would never lose.

Guthrie proved to be a force in the opening quarters as he scored 19 points before the break. The Vikings' defensive effort was also stellar. They only had three fouls the entire game and all of those were also made in the second half.

The Vikings proved to wear out the net as well as they shot early and often. From the field, Vinton County hit 41-71(57.7 percent) shots. Of this total, 30-52 (57.7 percent) were from two-point range and 11-19 (57.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Vikings also posted a 10-15 (66.7 percent) performance from the charity stripe while Nelsonville was only 1-3 (33.3 percent) from the stripe.

The Vikings also covered the basket well. Vinton County controlled the boards as they pulled down 40 caroms. Of those, 23 were defensive and 17 were offensive, which helped the great offensive output. Dustin Guthrie led the way with 10 rebounds. Nelsonville pulled down a total of 28 rebounds in the contest.

The Vikings will now take a little time off as they return to action Friday night against Belpre in a TVC-Ohio Division contest. It will also be Hall Of Fame Night as Andy Booth, Mark Bullock and Alice Taylor will be inducted into the VCHS Hall of Fame. The Vinton County High School Athletic Department is asking people to come out to this special night.

Game 15

It was a special Friday night at Vinton County High on three counts.

The Vikings picked up a 67-43 win over Belpre in Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division play, Dustin Guthrie broke the 1,000-point career scoring mark and three people were inducted into VCHS Hall of Fame. They were VCHS Athletic Secretary Alice Taylor, former standout quarterback Andy Booth and overall athletic standout Mark Bullock.

On the court, Guthrie needed 15 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He went to work quickly scoring 13 of those in the first quarter. The milestone basket came at the 4:14 mark in the second quarter, It was a layup that went off the left side of the glass. The game was stopped and Guthrie was presented with the game ball. He becomes just the third 1,000-point scorer in VCHS basketball history as he joins Ryan Caudill (1,591) and Chris Bethel (1,119) in this exclusive fraternity.

Vikings' Head Coach Matt Combs noted the accomplishment.

"He is obviously a great kid, a better player and he makes my job as a coach easier. Wish we had more of him." said Vikings' Coach Combs.

"Defense set the tone early..." added Combs. Vinton County set the tone early with a 21-10 lead and the Vikings really opened the door late in the first quarter for a truly outstanding second quarter on both ends of the court.

"Offensively, Ryan (Stewart) and Andrew (Eberts) hit some shots near the end of the first and the beginning of the second which allowed us to get the ball inside to Dustin (Guthrie)." stated Combs.

The Vikings exploded in the second stanza, finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run and held a 44-14 lead going into the break.

Coach Combs pulled the five seniors (Stewart, Eberts, Dixon, Ben Batey and Guthrie) with 7:27 in the fourth quarter and they, with the exception of Dixon, never saw the floor again.

Offensively, Guthrie led the way with 21 points while Stewart added 12 and Jake Prater added nine for the winners. Belpre was led by Tyler Watkins with 12 markers.

With the victory the Vikings move to 14-1 (7-0 TVC-Ohio), Belpre falls to 9-8 and 5-2 in league play.

In the preliminary games, Vinton County completed the sweep with a 66-40 win in the junior varsity contest as Brandon Clark scored 21. The Vikings freshmen were also victorious, 57-52.

Game 16

The Vinton County Vikings traveled up State Route 93 into Zanesville, crossing the Muskingham River and back down State Route 60 to a town similar in size to McArthur called Duncan Falls. Duncan Falls is the home of the Philo Electrics, who are members of the Muskingham Valley League.

From the tip until the end of the third quarter, the Vikings had their hands full. But the Vikings were able to put some distance between themselves and the Electrics on the scoreboard with a strong fourth quarter. And that made the long trip back home more enjoyable, as the Vikings came away a hard fought 66-55 victory.

The Vikings improved their record to 15-1, while the Electrics fall to 5-11.

"We felt as a team that this game was important to us, to measure ourselves in the final stretch of the season, going into the post season, and of course going into the tournament draw," said Vinton County head coach Matt Combs.

In the first quarter, the Vikings and the Electrics traded jabs like two heavyweights. However, Vinton County won the round by outscoring the host 17-14. Ryan Stewart connected on 3 of 3 from the outside the three-point arc and had 11 points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Vikings were able to extend their lead to five, 29-24. Again it was Stewart, who led the defensive charge with three steals. Offensively, he scored on a pair layups in transition off of his steals and added another three pointer, giving him 18 points at the half.

"I thought that Ryan played his best game of his career." Combs noted.

His teammate, Dustin Guthrie, who has done the bulk of his 19.9-point average per game in the first half this season, was conspicuously quiet with only six points.

That would change in the second half.

The Electrics coming out at halftime focused their attention on Stewart, limiting him in touches of the basketball. However, he still managed two 3s and two free throws, giving him eight-points in the half for a game-high 26 points on 9 of 16 shooting.

Guthrie on the other hand would be heard from.

"That is the thing about us, we can be hard to guard. You take Dustin (Guthrie) away, there is Ryan (Stewart) or Andrew (Eberts) to knock down some shots and vise versa." Combs said.

And that is exactly what happened, as the Electric made a concerted effort on Stewart's location and Guthrie made them pay. The 6-foot-5 senior post-player was able score in one-on-one situations, netting 15 points in the half.

Despite the heroics of Stewart and Guthrie, Philo was keeping pace. With 2:53 left in the third quarter, the Electrics managed to tie the score at 34-34, before the Vikings closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 40-36 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings defense wore down the Electrics and Guthrie scored 11 of his 21 points in the final eight-minutes. He went 5-for-5 from the field down the stretch, marking the seventh consecutive game that Guthrie has gone over 20 points in a game.

The Vikings outscored the Electrics 26-19 in the final stanza, for the 11-point margin of victory.

In the junior varsity contest, Vinton County claimed the sweep with a 57-30 victory. Dylan Guthrie scored 21 points to lead the Vikings to run their record to 16-0.

The Vikings will again take to the road this Friday night, as they will travel to Alexander for a crucial TVC Ohio Division match-up.

* NOTE - On Sunday, the Vikings learned that they received the number-one seed in the Division II sectional tournament and will play the winner of number 8 seed, New Lexington and number 9 seed, Jackson on February 16th at 3:00 pm at Wellston High School.

Who has Philo played outside their conference? Just curious they seem to be much better than their record would indicate.

Game 17

Ryan Stewart scored a game-high 20 points and keyed a fourth quarter run in Vinton County's 57-44 victory over Alexander in a Tri-Valley Conference, Ohio Division boys basketball tripleheader on Friday.

With the win, Vinton County (16-1, 8-0 TVC Ohio) is guaranteed of at least a share for the TVC Ohio Division title.

Leading by eight points midway through the fourth quarter, Andrew Eberts had a steal and a layup basket to push the lead to double-digits, where it remained the rest of the way.

Stewart, meanwhile hit two three-pointers and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth that helped seal the win for the Vikings.

Vinton County made a total of eight attempts from beyond the arc, led by Stewart with four, Eberts three and Grillo one.

With the game even at 8-8, Eberts, who did not start because of illness, came off the bench to hit two of his three field goals from beyond the arc in the first quarter to help lead Vinton County to an 18-13 advantage. Stewart also had two three-pointers during the period.

Dustin Guthrie, who finished with a double-double, scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds. But all of his scoring came in the first half, as Alexander was able to contain him on the inside in the final 16-minutes of action.

"Coming out of halftime, Alexander made an adjustment and packed their zone in on Dustin," said Vinton County head coach Matt Combs. "We didn't do a very good job of getting him the ball in the second half. But credit Alexander's game plan."

The Vikings, who led 31-25 at halftime, could not shake Alexander, as they outscored the Spartans by a slim 11-8 margin in the third quarter.

Part of that was due to the inability to get Guthrie the ball on the inside. Jake Prater, though, scored six points during the period, before he had to leave the game after picking up his fourth foul with 3:23 left in the period.

The Vikings committed 12 turnovers for the game, as compared to 17 for Alexander.

"Sometimes you have to take an ugly win," said Combs. "It's better to get an ugly win, rather than suffer a well-played loss."

The Vikings made it a clean sweep over Alexander on Friday, as Dylan Guthrie and Levi Lawhead added 10 points each to lead Vinton County (17-0) to a 43-41 win in the junior varsity contest. In the freshman contest, the Vikings were led by Bobby Walton with 13 points in a 34-27 victory.

Vinton County will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 5 when they host Meigs in a TVC Ohio match up at home.

Game 18

The Vinton County Vikings had a big second half offensively en route to a 75-55 Tri-Valley Conference- Ohio Division Tuesday win over Meigs on the home court.

The win clinches the outright TVC-Ohio Division championship for the team directed by Coach Matt Combs. The title is the fourth the Viking program has been able to rack up in the past five seasons.

Offensively, Vinton County was led by Dustin Guthrie with 29 points while Ryan Stewart added 24 and Jake Prater 14. Meigs was led by Cameron Bolin with 13 and Jacob Well with 12.

Combs told The Telegram. “We need to maintain focus and finish strong going into the post- season.”

Vinton County’s reigning TVC Ohio Player of the Year, Dustin Guthrie, got the Vikings off to a good start early by scoring the first seven points of the game en route to an 11-point quarter.

The Meigs offensive attack heated up from there. It caught fire as the guests went on a 17-6 run and the game was knotted at 17 at the first-quarter stop.

In the second quarter, Viking Jake Prater picked up the scoring slack by scoring six of his 14 points. His shooting helped keep the Vikings ahead of Meigs in the first half as VC took a slim 30-28 lead at the half.

In the second half, Guthrie pick up where he left off in the initial quarter. He scored the first six points of the quarter and went on to score 10 in the stanza. Those markers were included in his way to the aforementioned game-high 29 points. Guthrie also aided the Viking effort with 10 rebounds and five assists as well.

Additionally, in the second half, Ryan Stewart had the hot hand with two shots from beyond the arc in both of the latter quarters. His effort helped the Vikings pull away from the Marauders and send his team on the way to the title.

After the contest, the Vikings cut down the net on one side while the Lady Vikings, who also won the TVC Ohio title, clipped the net on the other end of the court. In junior varsity action, the Vikings also won by a 7 1-47 count. The victory ran their record to an 18-0 clip. Dylan Guthrie and Adam Ward paced the winners with 14 points each.

Game 19

Vinton County senior Dustin Guthrie scored a game-high 13 points and had three steals in limited action to lead the Vikings past the slumping Wellston Golden Rockets 71-37 in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division boys' basketball finale on senior night Friday at Vinton County High School.

"It's great to finish unbeaten in the league and especially to be able to do it at home," said Vinton County head coach Matt Combs. "It is a nice way to send our seniors out in their final home game."

The Vikings (18-1, 10-0 TVC Ohio) have now won 12 out of its last 13 games. Sophomore Andy Grillo added 11 points and had five assists for Vinton County, which has won its last 10 games overall against the Rockets.

Wellston (4-16, 1-9) has now lost five straight games since its overtime victory over Jackson during the National Hoops Classic on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Vinton County trailed 4-0, before Guthrie scored on a layup with 6:03 left in the opening period. He scored five of his 13 points during the period and junior Jake Prater's field goal put the Vikings ahead for good.

Prater scored six of his 10 points and Stewart hit a pair of three-point field goals to lead the Vikings on a 26-3 run in the second quarter and led 38-13 at halftime.

Senior Andrew Eberts, who finished in double-digits with 10-points for the game, hit a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter to lead the Vikings on a 14-9 run and 52-22 lead, as Vinton County outscored Wellston 33-24 in the second half.

Junior Tyler King, who had three 3-pointers, was the only Wellston player to finish in double figures in scoring with 11 points, while Jeff Matteson and Andy Derrow added seven points each and Aaron Jackson and Slone Cales had five apiece.

The Vikings went 30-for-58 (51.7 percent) from the field and held a 27-17 rebounding advantage, led by Prater with six rebounds.

Vinton County also honored five seniors before the start of the game in (Dustin) Guthrie, Eberts, Stewart, Ben Batey and Michael Dixon.

"Dustin obviously had a great career, he is a super kid and I wish we had more like him," said Combs. "Eberts and Stewart are the best one-two punch from outside the arc and they make our offense go. Ben (Batey) is one of the finest defensive players in the league and Michael (Dixon) just has a great attitude. He knew coming in that he wouldn't have as much playing time coming into the season but he accepted his role. He has been a wonderful teammate."
