All public schools
All small-medium sized towns, not big city suburbs
All first-time winners [I think]

Yes, it sure is?!?!?!?!?

Another thing to note is not one Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, or Toledo team took a crown this year.

This year may be an anomoly, but I love it!!!!!!!

Congratulations to all of the winners, it is so nice to see smaller communities walk away from the tournament as winners!!!!

This year's tournament has restored my faith in the entire BB tournament.

Congratulations to all of the champions!

One 2nd time winner Cage.Glandorf won it in 2004 when they were still D-2 with the Pollitz Twins. ;-)

Other than 2006, the last time public schools grabbed all of the state championships was 1981.

They probably would have one or two more if it wasn't for Akron SVSM.

I love the comment about open enrollment killing private schools, it really is kind of true though. There was some quality basketball games and teams this whole weekend.

It doesn't matter to me whether the champion is a public or private school. I just want to see the best teams compete for the state championships. And for the most part, that's what we got this past weekend. I'm sure there were a few upsets along the way........Whitmer beating Timken, Chanel beating Malvern, but overall I was happy with the state tournament field. I always enjoy going to the state tournament........the mecca for a basketball junkie like myself.

1981 was the year that Kalida beat Southeastern in the semi's. Are you sure Dayton Roth was public? I thought they were a catholic school, but I could be wrong. Roth had an unbelievable team that year.

It is also interesting that the Chill.-Libby game was the only close game this year, it looks like the others were pretty much blowouts.

GoBlue22,

I'm almost postive that Roth was public. I believe it was on the West Side of Dayton and predominantly African-American because Dayton was one of the most segregated cities in the US.

And to add to what you said about Kalida, they beat Southeastern 73-56 and then they beat Gahanna Columbus Academy 58-44 in the championship.

Tri-Valley made it that year as well, but lost to Napoleon in the Semis.

Chillicothe and Newark are state champs-Logan lost to both of these teams this year and Zanesville beat both of them.

Dayton Roth was a public school and was loaded. Lead by Portsmouth native Mike Haley who won multiple State Championships. Also, the great OSU Buckeye Keith Byars played on that team. Sadly, Roth was closed down after the school year. Haley moved over to Dayton Dunbar and lead them to a State Runner-up and a State Championship in 1987.

norepy66,

I noted that as well, but like to say Zanesville split with both teams. 1 and 1 against each. Zanesville very easily could have had a State Championship this year, but Newark got on a roll.
