Logan 66 vs Unioto 56 ... final

Post by pfloyd »

Logan 66
Unioto 56 final

... a BIG opening night at Jim's Gym in Logan ... as the Logan boyz varsity wrapped up a full day of 6 games vs the Shermans from Ross county - the Chiefs did it in style by pinning an opening game "L" on D2 Unioto ... Logan 66 Unioto 56 ...

... Coach Hoops' Shermans started the game on fire hitting 5 of their first 8 threes in quarter #1 as Brandon Kennedy drained 3/3 from downtown with bookend 3 balls from running mates Logan Swackhammer and Casey White ... for the Chiefs of LHS it was a "get our feet wet" quarter as 4 of the 5 starters dented the scoring column with all 5 of Logan's field goals in the opening quarter in the paint at the rim ... Unioto 19 Logan 15 end of qtr 1 ... Logan after only taking 1 shot from behind the arc in the first stanza opened up the floor with 8 three point attempts connecting on 50% going 4/8 from behind the 3 point line in the 2nd quarter ... Logan was led from off the bench by senior Colton Dixon (6 pts) 2 treys ... UHS's big guns cooled off in the 2nd going 1/5 from downtown as UHS point guard sat the entire quarter after picking up his 2nd foul ... UHS was whistled for over 10 fouls in the first half as Logan was in the 1 & 1 in the first and the double bonus during the 2nd qtr. Logan finished the opening 2 qtrs. with a 6 point lead going into intermission with the big difference being FTs ... Logan shot 11 FTs and knocked down 9 while Unioto went 3/4 from the line ... Logan 35 Unioto 29 at the half ... Quarter number 3 was a wash as both teams matched buckets ... Logan 45 Unioto 40 after 3 ... Logan took control in the 4th period with Bo Myers hitting 10 of his team leading 24 points ... the Chiefs pushed the lead to over double digits before Logan Swackhammer drilled a pair treys to get the lead back under 10 points - the Unioto PG went down late in the game at the 41 second mark with what looked to be a severely sprained ankle as he was carried from the court ... Logan finished off the night going 8/12 from the FT line to pick up the first "W" under 1st year Logan coach Chris Rider ... Logan 66 Unioto 56 a final ...

Didn't get to go to this game. Did Unioto run a full court pressure defense at any point in time in this game?

Most of the second half along with a half court trap . Neither worked .

... yes they did ... Logan did an excellent job of breaking the press and handling the on ball pressure all night by UHS ... the biggest factor in the game was the foul situation ... as I pointed out Logan was in the bonus for 2+ minutes in the 1st quarter and the double bonus almost ALL of the 2nd quarter ... when Swackerhammer went to the bench it took that extra scoring option off the floor as well as length on the perimeter at the defensive end as well as all that he brings to the offensive end ... Logan was called for 15 fouls on the game while Unioto was whistled for 23 fouls on the night ... Logan went 20/29 from the FT line for the game - which is a BIG improvement from past years - looks like all of the 6:00 am foul shooting in the off season is paying off for LHS ...

... another factor was FG % as well - I don't keep shots taken in my napkin stats but looking at the points in the paint for Logan (24) Logan was able to get inside vs the Sherman D vs UHS only having 12 points down low ... I have to wait for Craig Dunn's game stats on Monday to see the shooting percentage for the Chiefs BUT it had to be close to 45-50% from the floor for the game imo ...

Unioto has put the Chiefs in the losing column to start the season the last couple of years - it is a boost for Logan to get off on a winning note vs this Unioto team , a big confidence builder for a Logan squad that starts 3 sophs, 1 junior and 1 senior ...

Quite a turn from last year 39 point Unioto win . Logan has only 1 return starter and starts 3 soph. Got to believe that the Shermans will regroup. Hats off to a young Logan team .Good stuff already. Gotta love high school hoops!

... I didn't see the "normal" team chemistry that has been a "given" for the Unioto TEAMS the past 2-3 years ... I'm sure Coach Hoops will get things rolling in the right direction ... has anyone any information on how serious the ankle injury was to Logan Swackhammer ? not putting any weight on it getting off the court to the bench or after the game getting to the locker room was not a good sign imo ...

... wish Swack a speedy recovery and return to the Sherman lineup ...

Largely due to the fact that they lack the identity of the past couple of years. They seem to have abondoned their mosterousn pressure defense in favor of a half court man. (Not sure if I'd go that route...) and a less true post game with the departing of Hosley. Tons of tools. Tons of potential. Lots of questions.

... 1906 - he is a very good player ... 6-5, strong on the boards, plays with intensity ... he had 13 points on Saturday ... he was right around where I think he can be every night with some 20 point games in the forecast as well to go with double digit boards ... right now I'm seeing a Unioto team struggling to find (and I know it was just the first game) struggling to find roles for the players they put on the floor ... Hill needs more touches inside so he can use that big body and strength ... I can see Peyton Hill going to the FT line 10 times a game if he can get the ball down on the blocks where he needs to be to be effective ... he gets the ball on blocks he WILL GO to the line ... P Hill was 4/4 from the line ... the perimeter folks need to work the ball in from the outside first - let Peyton draw the attention he deserves THEN he can kick it back outside ... Swackhammer/White/Kennedy can all knockdown the 3 ball - their shooting percentage will go up with more uncontested shots IF they focus on getting the ball down low first imo ... long answer short - he's a good player and will get better when the rest of the team decides to use him "in the paint" so he can open up the shooting for the perimeter peoples ...

You are right pfloyd, he does need more touches in the paint, but he has to want to stay in the paint. At times he wanders out to the perimeter so he can shoot the three ball.

The three ball will get you back into a game but points in transition and in the paint will win you alot of games ! Unioto will be a very good team so do not be fooled by the loss .
