Friday Night Menu for the Logan D2 Sectional ...

Post by pfloyd »

I was at Jim's Gym Tuesday night to watch the "play-in" games in the Logan D2 sectional :

Marietta 57
Circleville 47 a final

The Ouija Board had the Tigers of Marietta taking down the Round Town Tigers which turned out to be the case ... Coach Secrest's MHS team led at all stops in the opening games actions :

Marietta 13 ... 25 ... 33 ... 57
Circleville 7 ... 23 ... 31 ... 47

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Circleville

Scoring ... DJ Pickett 11, Seth Risner 10, Jacob Rhymer 8, Cameron Banks 7, Will Tolbert 6, Riley Gibson 3, Webster Marcella 2
3 Pointers ... 8/30 ... DJ Pickett 3, Will Tolbert 2, Jacob Rhymer 2, Cameron Banks 1
FTs .......... 1/6
TOs .........15
PnP ........ 11fgs /22 points in the paint
Transition buckets ... 4fgs/8 points in transition

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Marietta

Scoring ... Anthony Avendano 25, Tony Munos 14 , Mark Duckworth 5, Cyrus Rhodes 5, Austin Witukcy 4, Adrian Avendano 2, Jermaine Burke 2
3 Pointers ... 6/15 ... Anthony Avendano 6
FTs ... 9/14
TOs ... 15
PnP ... 14fgs/28 points in the paint
Transition buckets ... 2fgs/4 points in the transition

... Congratulations to Coach Secrest! good to see Coach in the "one seat" courtside for the Tigers ... have known Coach Secrest for many years ... good to see Coach handling the issues that have had to be "handled" on the river this season while pulling the Tigers together for an opening round W ... talking to Coach Secrest before the game Marietta has a couple of players out due to injuries including leading scorer/rebounder junior Derek Duckworth (broken hand) ... nice win, on to Sheridan Saturday afternoon in Logan (3pm start) ...

Tuesday's Nightcap :

New Lexington 47
Westfall 46 a final

... the 2nd game of the evening had the MVL vs SVC ... a good game between evenly matched teams as each took turns leading at the quarter breaks with New Lex having the lead when it counted at the end of the 4th quarter :

New Lexington ... 11 ... 27 ... 32 ... 47
Westfall ........... 14 ... 22 ... 35 ... 46

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Westfall

Scoring ... Austin Nunemaker 15, Trent Hampton 14, Jay Wyman 6, Noah Aponte 6, Jayden Hammond 3, Clay Steele 2
3 Pointers ... 5/13 ... Jay Wyman 2, Austen Nunemaker 2, Jayden Hammond 1
FTs ... 9/12
TO's ... 7
PnP ... 10fgs/20 points in the paint
Transition buckets ... 1 fg/ 2 points in transition

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - New Lexington

Scoring ... Seth Russell 18, Nick Pickrell 15, Will Stenson 6, Logyn Ratliff 4, Tez Tyson 2, Ean Fink 2
3 Pointers ... 4/12 ... Nick Pickrell 3, Will Stenson 1 (to take the lead 47-46 with 30 sec to play)
FTs ... 7/10
TO's ... 8
PnP ... 11 fgs/22 points in the paint
Transition buckets ... 1 fg/2 points in transition

... nice win for New Lex as the Panthers were 6 for 6 in fgs in the 4th quarter & 2/2 from the FT line as well ... as they survived Westfall's last second 3 point attempt ... New Lex survived and advances to take on Fairfield Union in the high noon game on Saturday afternoon in Logan ...

Friday Night at Jim's Gym :

6:00 pm ... Vinton County vs Athens

Athens enters the contest on a 9 game winning streak that includes wins AT Vinton County 54-51 , AT Logan Elm 49-44, AT Jackson 55-52 ... the Bulldogs of Coach Cozart have done their damage putting the offense in the hands of their BIGS - Isaiah Butcher/Justin Hines/ Eli Chubb ... perimeter scoring of Butcher/ Logan Maxfield/ Chubb ... ballhandling and penetration by Micah Saltzman/Logan Maxfield/Elijah Williams ... the Athens 1-2-2 or 3-2 match-up zone defense has held opponents to 46 points per game during the 9 game win streak ...

Vinton County enters the Logan Sectional as THE "?" ... Coach Combs' Viking have played through injuries to key starters literally ALL season as Naylan Yates was injured in the preseason, Nevan Yates injuried during football season & out the first 2 weeks of games, once these 2 starters made their way onto the court Eli Griffith went down for 3 weeks ... when Griffin got back floor leader/PG Jake Speakman suffered a back injury to close out the season ... What can we expect on Friday ? Naylan and Nevan Yates have shown brilliance from downtown "at times", Jake Speakman has been unstoppable "at times" getting to the rim, the VC BIGS have shown excellent/aggressive inside play "at times" ... in Speakman's absence PG transfer from Wellston Gavin Arbaugh showed that he could handle the ball, run the offense and distribute the ball ... with so many questions offensively as to what we will see Friday night - will it be the team I picked #3 in my preseason rankings? or will it be the #16 team where VC stands in the Week 12 rankings ?... I have major questions about the VC team on the defensive end of the floor as the Vikings have been inconsistent to say the least on defense ... having allowed upwards of 70-84 points a 2 different occasions ???? I personally am looking forward to seeing WHICH Viking squad shows up Friday night at BOTH ends of the floor ...

8:30 Warren vs Logan Elm ... a rematch of last years sectional game between these 2 juggernauts of the hardwood ... one of the few teams that Coach Maddox of Warren has a losing record against Coach Stiverson & Logan Elm ...

Warren ... the Warriors of Coach Maddox come into the game after playing one of the best strength of schedules in the SouthEast District games vs all 3 Parkersburg WVa teams Parkersburg Big Red/Parkersburg South (#1 team in WVa 6 point loss) /Pakersburg Catholic (a win) ... split with ECOL power Meadowbrook, Fort Frye twice, Logan #9 D1 team in the state, Cambridge, Athens , Spring Valley WVa, backyard rivals Belpre, Marietta, Waterford , New Philadelphia ... great preparation for the post season ... the last outing at the Logan gym saw the BBB lose to Logan BUT the Warriors shot a blistering 60% from the floor in a losing effort to Logan who shot 70% in the game from the floor ... this was supposed to be a "down year" for Warren 16 wins is an excellent record for a "down" year ... Warren is led by 6-5 senior big man Josh Huffman who has expanded his game to beyond the 3 point line this season to go with his strength in the paint, & the ability to get to the rim ... joining Huffman in the starting rotation are seniors Jared Hall (PG) and Thomas Williams both add stability to the BBB ... Coach Maddox goes 9-10 deep on his bench with Noah Nichols and Troy Huck rounding out the starters ... add Bryce Knost/Clay Miller/Seth Dennis/Brett Gandee to the role players slots ... a mix of youth for next year and senior leadership for the NOW put it all together you get a team that runs the motion offense , while playing the fundamentally sound defense we are used to seeing throw in the coaching courtside of Coaches Maddux, Coffman, Colgrove, & Mitchem ...

Logan Elm ... Coach Stiverson enters sectional play with his youngest group of starters ... as the Braves start freshmen Jeremy Wietelmann, Isaac Ward, Jason Sailor anchored by the "old men" junior Evan Huffman and senior Cody Anderson who holds this young group together ... coming off the bench Luke Watson (jr) , Gabe Chalfin (fr), Jared Harrington (so) ... most games for LE sees 4 freshmen on the floor at the same time ... any knowledge of a Coach Stiverson/Coach Holbert/Coach Dropsey LE team you know that 3 point shooting is key to the Braves offensive game - Ward, Huffman, Wietelmann do not disappoint as ALL can drain the triple ... not sure you can say LE has an inside game but Cody Anderson/Luke Watson are the 6-3, 6-5 size for the Braves ... on the plus side the youngsters have been under the direct coaching of Stiverson & Holbert for an entire regular season ... the youngsters have put up 9 W's on our pocket schedules ... a 3 game win streak in the later part of the season has shown us that the young guns are now getting into the paint to go with their perimeter scoring... the Logan Elm defense has rounded into shape as the youngster have learned and now execute what it means to play LE D - no hands, move your feet , beat teams to spots on the floor, body up the offensive player, put a body on any and all players crossing through the paint, disrupting the flow of the opponents offense ... LE has been able to hold teams offensively around the 50 ppg mark or less in the latter portions of the season ...
