District Tournament – early breakdown

League representation: The Scioto Valley Conference and Southern Ohio Conference each lead the way thus far with four teams apiece after the D2 and D3 brackets have been set for the 2018 district tournament at the Convocation Center. D4 sectional finals take place early next week.

SOC: Waverly, Oak Hill, Wheelersburg, Eastern Pike
SVC: Piketon, Southeastern, Unioto, Paint Valley
TVC: Vinton County, Alexander
OVC: Gallia, Fairland
MSL: Fairfield Union
SHL: Lynchburg Clay
MVL: Sheridan
IND: Warren

There will be SIX 20-win teams in this years field (No DIV teams can reach the 20 win plateau):

Fairland (20-3)
Gallia (20-3)
Sheridan (20-3)
Unioto (20-2)
Oak Hill (20-2)
Eastern Pike (20-3)

There are just two teams with double digit losses and only one with a losing record:

Alexander (13-10)
Southeastern (10-13)

There will be just one rematch from last years district tournament when Oak Hill squares off against Paint Valley and 7-foot center Dylan Swingle. The Oaks nipped the Bearcats 47-46 in the district semi-finals last year. They will do battle again Saturday at 6:30 in the 3rd game of the day.

The D2 district tournament should be very interesting as the field includes FIVE league champions. Vinton County (TVC), Fairland (OVC), Fairfield Union (MSL), Sheridan (MVL) and Unioto (SVC). First round lightning could be the 8 PM match Thursday between Fairfield Union and center Collin Woodside versus Gallia Academy and 7-foot center Zach Loveday.

The district tournament officially tips off this Thursday night as the D2 teams take the floor with the first game slated for 6:15. D3 games will be all day Saturday and DIV on Sunday.

Opening night should be a lot of fun ... Lots of basketball fans who haven't seen Fairland will probably show up to watch the Dragons. But with the Convo in the heart of TVC country - a lot of folks will be there to cheer on Vinton County.

The 8PM game has a lot of intrigue as well. Loveday may be the most talented young big man in the entire district, but Woodside is an absolute beast in the paint. Friday night will have good match-ups as well, but I don't think it has the same appeal as that Thursday double header.

Good rundown...there will be many many many excellent games!

I’m going with LC/Burg being the best finish. I feel a buzzer beater. His name will be Eric.

Not too be picky but Swingle just isn’t 7’0. I’d give him 6’10

Gallia Academy vs FU....I think FU is definitely better but the 7’0 Loveday and the matchup he puts out there makes them hard to predict. I could see Gallia winning a close one but could also see FU winning big.

My gut says FU takes it easier than most of us think.

Fairfield Union 63
Gallia Academy 48

Warren vs Unioto...gotta go with the big time experience of Unioto but Maddox’s team is clearly getting better and better. I won’t be surprised if Warren upsets them but I’m taking Unioto.

Unioto 59
Warren Local 56

Paint Valley vs Oak Hill

Paint Valley had them beat last year but Oak Hill left the court victorious. Swingle is an insane matchup nightmare for everyone. Newland has had a very solid season and lately other PV kids have been stepping up too. Oak Hill will be the favorite against every D3 in the SE. PV knows the game plan to beat them but I don’t think this game is as great as it was last year. I see Carroll and Hale being big.

Oak Hill 54
Paint Valley 45

Looks that way according to times.

2:00, 3:45, 5:30 and 7:15 on Sat
3:00, 4:45, 6;30 and 8:15 on Sun

1 ticket = 4 games!!!! best entertainment money can buy

Lynchburg Clay vs Wheelersburg

This game revolves around how Wheelersburg uses Holden. If Holden puts up big numbers I don’t think LC can win. LC has their own big players and have had very recent big time Convo success. I think LC wins on a buzzer beater or Burg takes it without too much scare beyond the early part of the 4th quarter.

Lynchburg Clay 67
Wheelersburg 65

If he takes down OH I’ll give him 7’0 and you can put him at 7’2

Alexander vs Piketon

I’m going to go with Alexander. They do things real well and seem to be peaking a bit. Piketon is legit and Perdue does it all. Alexander takes this one in their backyard.

Alexander 56
Piketon 53

Perdue with 38

I like it!

One thing is for certain, coach Kearns is a very underrated coach. Give that guy a week to prepare and he will have a good game plan ready to go for Saturday.

I sat behind their bench at Jackson...the old Rio star does a good job and his son has ice in his veins

Oh I’m just jealous lol. Regardless 6’9-7’0...he’s the toughest matchup in the SE District. Great player and one of the best at avoiding foul trouble and staying on the court.
