Not often Wheelersburg gets to be the huge underdog with no chance. Be interesting to see how they respond.

Well district champs are still playing. So lacing up the track spikes will be later than most. 1 of 16 remaining in the state tourney. Many would be happy to change places with them. Good luck.

Haters gonna hate ! And At least Burg is still playing and if anything Burg will get a ton of experience from this game and it will help them going into next year because Burg is only losing 2 seniors. Burg will play hard win or lose and represent southern Ohio well I am proud to be a Burg grad and Fan so GO BURG!! And all the negative comments about Burg or this game just shows how people can't. Stand not to be a part or a fan of a winning program year in and year out in all of Burg sports!

I was going to ask who the haters were exactly on this thread...and then the post before this one was made lol

Wheelersburg will always be a place that I admire. It started in baseball and getting to see them in Chillicothe every year was (and still is) a treat. Carried themselves with a quiet confidence, played really hard, well, and clean. I've started to pay attention to them in other sports as well and it appears that it is community wide and that is something to be proud of.

I think their run likely ends this week, but they will be back and likely better next year as well. I hope they prove me wrong and beat HP though.

Nothing like stirring the pot on a Sunday afternoon.

Good luck To Coach Ater and The Pirates.

Coach Ater’s 9th year as a Varsity coach. 4th Regional appearance. I know he has his detractors but heck 6 of them on here are 1 guy with 6 usernames so that accounts for some of it.

Holden’s detractors are the worst type though. High school kid who has more talent than most — in 2 different sports — and gets trashed pretty regularly on here. I guess it’s part of it and there might be more of that ahead of him but it’s something that makes you wonder.

I asked a referee once at the conclusion of a game if they wanted the police to stay around and escort them out. 1 of them said “ no — they act differently when we walk past them in the lobby”.

So no one answered my question, where do there kids come from? Are they hand picked from around the Columbus area? If that is the case then how in the hell can anyone say anything about Burg or any other school from this area getting transfers in???

How do you expect the teams around here to compete with the best from a huge city like Columbus? Sounds like one team could take the 12 best from this area and maybe stay within 15 points of this team.

noitall, if you represent a team from SE Ohio than you are part of the reason SE ohio gets no respect in any sports even when they win. You need to get off the hateraid just because your team got beat and help cheer on a team that has "zero" chance.

I remember a Burg team playing a certain Columbus team, Bishop Hartley to be exact in 1995 state semi-finals and the Columbus paper gave them no chance, I mean zero and we all know how that game ended. Burg gave them an ass whoopin' and even had the headline the next day, Hartley runs into a buzzsaw. YES.THEY. DID.

You will find Harvest Prep kids have attended Canal Winchester, Gahanna, Groveport, Columbus Independence, Marion Franklin and Hamilton Twp. Many schools on the southside of Columbus. But the glue to this would be AAU. Harvest Prep lists 8 assistant coaches. How does a school of male enrollment of 73 have 8 assistant coaches. A couple years ago a kid from Zanesville (Division I and II) transferred to Harvest Prep(Division IV) and his guardianship was changed to an Uncle that lived in Columbus. Long story short the kid ended up back at Zanesville because of questions being ask.

This is happening with high schools, college and even pros. Its just the culture of sports today.

Harvest Prep is on the Southeast side of Columbus north of 33 and south of 70 on Gender Rd. Canal Winchester area. Charter school or Magnet School.

Africentric was an example of this in 2005 when they won the State Championship and later had to Return the Triphy. Harvest Prep is also relatively new and formed from a Conglomerate Church and is attached to it. Division 4 schools have been running into them in girls and boys basketball for 15 years now. If not one of those two then Worthington Christian or Fairfield Christian Academy

They seem to be D3’s issue now. Good luck.

The first two examples I can think of at the smaller school level would have been Columbus Wehrle and CAPE. You remember CAPE coming into Pirate Stadium in 1986 with Carlos Snow and Vinnie Clark—- goodness.

Harvest Prep is outside of Columbus, closer to Canal Winchester than actual Columbus. They are near Reynoldsburg, Whitehall, CW, and Groveport, so I'm guessing they filter in kids from all of those.

They aren't like a Watterson, Ready, or Hartley that rely on feeder schools and that's why their Competitive Balance number is so insanely high. They also made a vast improvement at the halfway mark, like they normally do. They may jump to D2 next year when they look at this year's rosters after the season.

Not sure what the heck you mean. I’m sure Eastern or Piketon would like to still be playing...but they aren’t.

Who might that recruit be? I’m not sure even a big man would help Burg against this team. If Burg gets it handed to them so be it. Wouldn’t be the first time they have lost in the Regionals.

Only time will tell.

I just don’t get why the OHSAA would want a team like this bringing 150 fans to the final four over a team like Burg, Oak Hill or Garaway that will bring around 4-5000 fans. Take the Burg’s state championship game in football. They set a record with 9780 fans and I say the Burg side had well over 6000 on it

LucasDavenport wrote: Sun Mar 11, 2018 11:26 am The only thing that could take away the legitimacy of making it to the state tournament is doing something illegal to make it and then having the Title stripped.

Now that the Charter Schools have been moved up to D3 — you want to question the legitimacy of small schools advancing in Division 4? You need to look at the history of qualifying to the state and use the same barometer then on the D3 and D2 teams who made it to the state. 1989 — Wheelersburg and Chesapeake played in the Regional Finals. Ironton and Oak Hill played in a Regional Final in the last few years. There were some years when D3 got 3 teams to Regionals and would see 1 from the East District join them. Do you think they were legitimate?

This started in the mid to late 80s when Columbus Wehrle would cherrypick studs and beat Beaver Eastern in the Regionals. They arguably would have a tougher road than the AA teams sometimes.

Only usernames can take away the legitimacy of going to the state tournament.
Yep, I remember Peebles getting beat by Wherle in the regionals in 1984. That Wherle team had Ohio State grad Jerry Francis,OSUs,Eli Brewster, and I think West Virginia s Jonny Green( I think that was his name). We played at the barn at the fairgrounds. Wherle had perhaps 60 fans at that game. It hasn't changed much and never will. Good luck Burg.

Think it's bad in Ohio...take a look in Florida. In bb..we have div 1A..1B..2A and B all the way to 9A. All schools are based on student enrollment only (as far as I know). And we have countless (almost) charter/magnet schools.

It all works out in the long run down here

Lmao so ya think ohsaa should give you a free ride because you have a lot of fans?
Like I said NO ONE down that way can come close to beating HP or most other schools in Columbus you used to beating up the little guys the roles are reversed here.

Im not like most on here and I give my opinion im not here to suck on no ones toes, like a lot of you wanting to give group hugs and don't care if you like my opinion or not .

I predicted 20 plus but now I hope its 30 and yea yea I know you will play hard
