To get away from scoring for a sec ...

Arbaugh lit Athens up in the first half for 18
Cozart put Maxfield on him in the 2nd and he scored just 3 points, including getting shut out in the 3rd.
The kid Logan guarded vs Marietta barely scored.
Mikey Seal had 18 vs Athens in first match up, Cozart puts Maxfield on him Friday and Seal barely scored at all.

The last 4 or 5 games he has been far and away Athens best defender and is being asked to guard opposing teams best player.

Didn’t they put him on Baer too in the Meigs game? How did those two compare in that match? I can’t remember from the radio stream. I didn’t get to see the Vinton game or heat the Marietta game so that’s a pretty interesting fact.

Maxfield had 21 vs Meigs
Baer had 13 vs Athens

A lot riding on Athens vs Alex Friday ...

But Athens still has a game with Meigs remaining!

It nice to look at players from offensive view only. The guy scores a basket only to give one at the other end. Caleb Terry avg of 11 points per game. From a defensive, the blocked shots and the abilty to make players alter their shots should mean something. There have been several games where he has 4-5 blocked shots. In addition, having him underneath allows the other players to be more aggressive on defense, knowing he has their back. Just a little food for thought.

I was gonna say Chubb has several blocks as well too for a Athens. I am assuming Eli Griffith as well. Like to see Chubb on Terry just to see how they match up against each other.

Jack Hart (Alexander) won POY by doing the things you just mentioned.

Had Caleb started the season a little better I think his name would be in the conversation right now.

Definitely be in the running next year, which could be very interesting. A lot of good players returning.

One other Terry is 31 for 40 from free throw for 77%. Nice touch for big guy.

Folks who think Athens will drop off the table after losing 4 key seniors will be wrong.
The Dogs have some pieces coming back, including 2 juniors who opted not to play this year but plan on returning in 2019/2020.
The JV team is (12-2) and loaded with players ready to take that next step.

If they are loaded they should start to schedule up to get them ready for Post Season . Except for a couple games their schedule is sub par . To get to the next level you have to push yourself . I know they are tied to the TVC ( which I think is a mistake ) but with the talent coming back and an excellant JV TEAM they should play better competition IMO.

They played Waverly, Chesapeake, Gallia, Warren, Jackson, Logan, Lancaster, Vinton and Alex twice. That's 11 tough games. Meigs will be tough next year too.

Maybe drop Wood County and put Logan Elm back on. That's about all you need to do.

Why did those juniors not play? Kids often don’t come back after missing out a year.

They have been playing at the rec.
One is a die hard baseball player and weighed his options of limited playing time in bball vs training for small ball - and chose the latter.
The other is Hynes younger brother,
Who is about 6'4. Not sure why he didn't play, he wont give me a straight answer. Lol

No direspect but losses to Gallia ,Warren and Vinton County . Did not see Jackson on the schedule and Lancaster was canceled . Scheduling Logan is going forward . I think and this is just my opinion if they trend to up their overall schedule and play some other style teams such as Eastmor or go even farthur it would pay dividends later. Record will not be as good but would prepare them for Post season and still would make them stronger in the TVC.I like the debate and think Athens is one of those teams that would benefit scheduling up with their under classes . IMO

Lancaster game is rescheduled for the 9th

Athens wont be 'loaded' next year. They'll be a solid team.

If the Player of the Year is truly an individual and not a team trophy.....Colby Bartley from Miller has to be mentioned in the conservation.

I coached this young man and he's a super kid---I add that so you'll know where I'm coming from but it doesn't matter---in this case the numbers don't lie.

I wouldn’t change anything on the matchups. Just pay a little more attention to Kearns this time around. Hard to beat Butchers Wingspan-he shut Terry down last game. Mecum concerns me more than anyone from Alex. His defense is outstanding and been putting up consistent scoring numbers.

POY thread usually starts way before the season begins based on favoritism. Look at Athens last season that was a joke about who was the best. POY will go to the player on the winning team in the Alley bash. Do not count out Mecum, hard nosed gets the job done and is not getting easy baskets based on releasing early. Athens has Hynes doing all the dirty work down low. His boxing out gives others a chance to rebound. He is the senior that does not get the press playing with a bad back who gave his football team mate a chance to start on senior night. That is POY behavior. Kearns is also very very good.

Hynes would get my vote if I were a coach. But I value things other than scoring, offense.
