New Boston 63
Wellston 51 a final

... I decided early in the week that I needed to see some more of the D4 teams - watched Trimble vs South Gallia last night in Glouster, tonight took the drive down Rte 93 to Wellston to see my alma mater Glenwood High School take on the Wellston Rockets ... I spoke with a_c_m before the JV game, went courtside to chat with Coach Adam Cox as well - I know he gets negative press from a few on here but he IS a good guy! does so much for the kids at NB and truly cares about the kids outside of hoops ...

New Boston , D4, has maybe 14 kids total on the JV & Varsity teams combined ... to keep kids within the rules on quarters played etc. due to having to play both JV & varsity most of their JV games are 2 quarter games ... NB lost the JV game - don't even remember the score BUT I want to give props to Austin Gosselin ! - played a good all around floor game for the JV Tigers ! nice job AG - Uncle Pfloyd ...

... the Tigers entered tonight at 11-5 having just beat Portsmouth Clay on Friday night , the Rockets 2-12 on the season ... the Tigers of Coach Cox opened the 1st quarter as if they were going to run the Rockets outta Wellston ! WHS opened playing a 2-3 zone which did nothing to stop NB ... the Tigers seemed more than up to taking on the perimeter challenge going 4/6 from behind the arc in the quarter with 6-7 swing man Tyler Caldwell dropping 10 pts in the opening qtr. on 2 triples and transition dunk ... 6-5 post player Kyle Sexton added 5 with an inside move for 2 and a trey from downtown ... the Rockets were led by Josh Bodey's 5 pts. ... New Boston 22 Wellston 13 after 1 ... the 2nd period was all Wellston ... the Rockets went man to man on the defensive end holding the Tigers to but 7 points in the quarter ... getting WHS back in touch was Hunter Smith off the bench as he knocked down 8 points mostly in the paint with Brice Randolph adding 5 points for the Rockets on a triple & a deuce ... New Boston 29 Wellston 26 going into half time ... both teams had trouble protecting their possessions as each team turned the ball over almost more times than they scored the ball - NB with 5 TOs and WHS with 8 in the 3rd period ... New Boston gained some separation in the 3rd going down low to the 6-5 big man Kyle Sexton - the big sophomore put up 8 points in the quarter the Tigers ... New Boston 45 Wellston 38 end of 3 ... Rylan Molihan for WHS had 2 drives and triple for Wellston in the 4th but the Rockets could get no closer than 7 as the Tigers kept the Rockets at arms length mainly from the FT line as the Tigers went 6/7 from the line in the final minutes ... Kyle Sexton added 6 points in the qtr. with 2 scores and one on each to seal the game for the visiting Tigers ... New Boston 63 Wellston 51 a final ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Wellston ...

Scoring ... Rylan Molihan 12, Hunter Smith 12, Brice Randolph 8, Josh Bodey 5,Zane Ervin 4, Jarrett Wilson 4, RJ Kemp 3, Donnie Watters 2, Cole Broaddus 1

3 Pointers ... 4/16 ... Rylan Molihan 2, Brice Randolph 2
FTs ... 5/16
TO's ... 20
PnP ... 16 fgs/32 points in the paint
PnT ... 4 fgs /8 points in transition

... the Rockets have a lot of size ! as was predicted on seops they would play hard but come up on the short end on the score board ... the Rocket BENCH put up 25 points for Wellston - may have to look at who is getting the minutes ! as Hunter Smith/Brice Randolph combined for 20 of those bench points for WHS ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - New Boston ...

Scoring ... Tyler Caldwell 22, Kyle Sexton 19, Marcus Saunders 8, Jerome McKinley 8, Grady Jackson 4, Malachi Potts 2
3 Pointers ... 4/10 ... Tyler Caldwell 2, Marcus Saunders 1, Kyle Sexton 1
FTs ... 11/16
TOs ... 15
PnP ...19fgs/38 points in the paint
PnT ... 4fgs/8 points in transition

... good win tonight for the Tigers ... seemed the officials swallowed their whistles for most of the second half when the ball was in the Tigers court - surprise someone didn't get hurt (ie. Caldwell was undercut at the rim - traveling called - surprised TC got up after the "hit" after the whistle) ... on the road, interleague non-conference game , a short bench ... Tigers go to 12-5 ... their 2 bigs carried the show inside and outside - Tyler Caldwell (sr)/Kyle Sexton (so) ... nice D4 ball club ... best of luck in the post season to the Tigers !

Thanks for the rundown....you told the story well.

2nd quarter surprised Wellston won big by man to man. Sounds like Cox made the necessary adjustments.

I am not surprised of the whistle swallowing. A lot of times on the road they really let them play and the visiting team just has to be stronger and tougher.

Looks like Wellston makes their free throws they don’t have to foul like crazy late in desperation. 25 bench points is surprising. Wellston struggling, you imagine they'll see more time.

great write up! Smith from Wellston I think is a good player. he has great potential and if he keeps at the hard work he could be a problem for teams in the near future.

pfloyd,

How would you compare New Boston to South Gallia and Trimble that you watched the other night?
