There have been 16 teams from the SE district that have made the state tournament this century. Of those 16, Portsmouth, Ironton, Wheelersburg, and South Webster each have 2 appearances.

3 state championships have been won by SE teams during this time: South Webster in 2006, Chillicothe in 2008, and Oak Hill in 2009. There has not been a D1 or D3 state champion from the SE during this time. Since the OHSAA went to 4 divisions in 1988, a SE D3 team has never won the state title.

Portsmouth has the most recent victory in the state tournament, that being a 74-66 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the 2012 D3 semifinals.

Overall records by division at the state tournament:

D2: 2-3
D3: 2-11
D4: 4-3

SE D4 has not had a team advance to the state tournament since Oak Hill in 2009; Lynchburg Clay was the last D3 team to advance to the state tournament, doing so in 2016. Proctorville Fairland has the most recent D2 appearance, that being in 2017.

The SOC I and II, OVC, SHAC, TVC, SEOAL, and SVC have all made state appearances during this time. The FAC is a new conference and doesn't figure in this statistic.

Breakdown of appearances by conference: SEOAL with 6, SOC I with 2, SOC II with 3, TVC with 2, SHAC with 3, SVC with 1; Logan Elm is a member of the Mid-State League which is not a SE district league but LE is a SE district school.

(If I made some mistakes on this, please let me know, this stuff can be tough on the eyes)

I think that SE D2 has the best chance or reaching the state in 2019. The D3 and D4 district champions will have to deal with the Central District champion, as well as the East winner. There is no Central District representative coming to Athens in D2.

I’d like to give a shout out to Pat Hines of Whiteoak.

He got them there in 2001-02 with a rotation of no player over 6’2....lost in state semis but were leading at half. The very next season he lost 4 out of 5 starters and 5 of the 7 players in that state semi team rotation...he took that team back to the elite 8. He could flat out coach.

Has anyone another example similar to that in not returning hardly any experience and still nearly making state?

That really is insane.

I always liked the Ironton team after losing in the Finals. Graduated 3 starters, plus Wagingner transferred to SW. Pretty much only Dennis Gagai back and they reached the Elite 8. I’m pretty sure that was LaFon, so after Zornes had left, but still a really impressive piece of coaching as well.

Very similar. Gagai was incredible. Whiteoak has Jeremy Stacy baselining them through the tournament

No problem. I wasn’t going to bother with it but I know how meticulous you are. We have that in common.

In the past 18 years which southeast team was the best on this list? I really think you have to pick from one of the state champions since they won it all. I think my pick would have to be the Chillicothe Cavaliers in 2008. Truly remarkable run beating undefeated Poland team (ranked 1) and the most talented team Toledo Libbey (ranked 4) in the state finals. I think most of the Ross County people appreciated their hard work and great accomplishment during this time in southern Ohio. Your thoughts?

I agree. They also beat the D1 State Champs (Newark) during the regular season. The amount of athletes that they had on that team was unreal and they were really exciting to watch.

Tough to outdo that team. The South Webster State Championship team was extremely special as well. Nick Aldridge was barely beat out for Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by a guy named Stephen Curry.
