Lucas,

With you living in South Webster school district... I can’t believe you forgot about the 2004 South Webster team that lost in the semis to Holgate on a prayer of a buzzer beater. Holgate went on to win the state title.

I wasn’t there but most people say that shot was in his hands way after the buzzer went off. But you can never put the game in the hands of the officials. They always screw it up

I was there sitting in court seats, the ball was still on his fingers as the clock struck 0:00. I loved St. John Arena and most games over the years were sellouts. I'll never forget the sellout attendance number, 13,276 (not including SRO numbers with courtside extras and interior hallways being jammed with the "pass" bodies) and there is not a bad seat in the house.

Dom Tiberi on channel 10 did a segment on it that night.

It’s when I started thinking that it’s more fun to call a basket good then no good.

Charge is more fun to call then block.

Out is more fun to call then safe.

A great ref/umpire doesn’t make a spectacle out of any of these calls. If he does then you can count on him to make the one call more than the other. To this day I rank a ref on how much he sells the charge call. If he sells it with all he’s worth then don’t drive the lane.

Good info, LucasDavenport. Just to add a few things about Portsmouth's state tournament history.......the Trojans are 8-1 in their last 9 state semifinal games (wins in 1931, 1934, 1961, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1990, loss in 2011, win in 2012) The loss in 2011, was to Cleveland Central Catholic, which beat PHS 58-47. Portsmouth had not lost a state semifinal game since 1929, when Dover beat the Trojans in the Final 4 semifinals. Dover also beat PHS in the Final 4 semifinals in 1927. PHS has an 8-3 record overall in state semifinal games.

Portsmouth's 1988 state championship was in D2, not AA as was posted above. That D2 state title was the very first D2 state title because that was the first year the OHSAA expanded to 4 divisions.

Here is a quick summary of Portsmouth's state tournament history and where the Trojans rank in the state all time:

Number of state appearances: 15 (4th).....Akron SVSM's 2019 appearance gives them 16
Number of state tournament games played: 27 (3rd) Akron SVSM has 25 going into the 2019 state tournament
Number of decades making the state tournament: 8 (2nd) Canton McKinley is 1st with 9
Number of state tournament games won: 16 (tied for 4th).....16-11 overall record.....tied for wins with Middletown
Number of state championship games played: 8 (tied for 5th)....4-4 record......behind Canton McKinley, Cleve.VASJ, Akron SVSM, Middletown
Number of state championships: 4 (tied for 6th) tied with St.Henry, Newark, Cincinnati Moeller, Dayton Stivers
Number of Final 4 wins: 12 (tied for 5th); state tournament has also been in Elite 8 and Sweet 16 format.

Portsmouth ranks 5th or higher in all but one category, that being state titles, in which PHS is tied for 6th.

Portsmouth is also the last SE district school to win a game in the state tournament, that being a 74-66 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the 2012 D3 semifinals. O-G won the D3 state title in 2013, beating Ironton 61-60.

I see what you did there! But I was at that game and remember thinking what a shame b/c North Adams will likely never have a team that talented ever again. Should have won it all. Still think it would make a great ESPN 30/30 piece.*

1930 Lancaster St. Mary (now Fisher)! 34-3 victory in that one. Epic.

Lost the next year to Austintown Fitch in OT. Oh, if only Fitch was a big school then!
