South Webster 46
Minford 65 a final

... made the 1 1/2 hr drive from the Hocking Hills to South Webster to catch my first "eyes on" either Minford or South Webster - I have watched practically all of each of the teams games this season via livestream or hudl ... BUT as we all know video is NOT the same as "in-person" ... I walked up to the school just as the Minford bus pulled up - I was greeted by Coach Montgomery as he departed the bus, Coach handed over a new bag of Twizzlers!!! - bonus points for the Minford Bench !!! ... As I walked into the gym, the Jeeps were shooting around ... 6-7ish Eli Roberts was shooting 3's from the corner I walked past - inperson the young man is a 7 footer LOL ... okay, maybe not but with his wingspan he might as well be 7 ft tall ... in-person/eyes on better than video - check ...

... on paper this game should have been close between 2 of the best in Southern Ohio ... Minford was holding onto the #1 ranking on Pfloyd's Elite 8 while SW was sitting at #12 ... both teams have size/length, both have a 6-4ish strong man in the paint ... both teams have wing players who can shoot the ball ... both have PGs who can run the offense ... Minford however has THAT guy - sophomore Myles Montgomery - who not only runs the offense he CAN be "THE" offense which ended up one of the deciding factors in the game ...

... the opening quarter was as predicted - tight - South Webster picked up scoring from the duo of Dylan Shuppert (4pts) and 6-7 soph Eli Roberts (5pts) to go with 2/2 from the free throw line by Tyler Summer ... for the Falcons all of the scoring came from sophomores ... 6-5 Bennett Kawser 3 pts /Myles Montgomery shouldered the bulk of the offense taking the ball to the rim for 3 buckets on drives to the basket to go with 3/3 from the line (9pts) ... neither team connected from beyond the arc Minford 0/3, South Webster 0/6 ... Minford 12 South Webster 11 end of 1 ... even with the score close , Minford appeared the more aggressive team offensively taking the ball to the bucket hard, defensively attacking the paint on the boards at both ends ... quarter 2 had MHS getting separation on the scoreboard ...nothing flashy , simply playing hard at both ends ... the Falcons showed their speed, being able to get to the rim seemingly anytime they wanted (ie. Montgomery 6 fgs in the 1st half at the rim off of drives from the perimeter) ... separation would have been faster and by a bigger margin had Minford been scoring the ball from the 3 point line (Minford 3 for 10 in the first 2 periods) ... on the SW end of the court, the Jeeps shot themselves out of contact from behind the 3 point line going only 2 for 13 in the opening half ... the Jeeps were led by Tyler Summer's 4 points in the 2nd/Roberts added 2 pts, the pair of 3's for SW were from Will Collins and Owen Mault off the bench ... with Montgomery not being able to find the bottom of the net from 3 point land, he still contributed by getting to the rim for 7 pts in the qtr/ when he wasn't taking the ball to the rim, he penetrated and dished to Adam Crank - 2 treys in the period to go with a medium range 2 ball (8pts) ... and 6-7 post player senior Joe Hannah (3 pointer) ... 6-4 soph Jackson Shoemaker picked up a putback bucket & 1 (3pts the old fashion way) ... neither team had a turnover in the 2nd qtr ... a clean quarter on TOs, but the energy was all on the Minford side of the court was the impression I got in the Cheap Seats ... Minford 33 South Webster 23 at the half ... all doubt as to the outcome of this one was laid to rest in the 3rd qtr. the Falcons opened with a 6-0 run that pushed the halftime lead of 10 to 16 points (39-23 MHS 6:28 on the clock) ... 19 point lead at 3:09 Falcons 46-27 by 1:38 on the game clock in the 3rd this one was over Minford 54-29 ... Webster's 3 fgs in the period Roberts/Christian White 2 points each ... Tyler Summers added a 2pt'er +1FT (3pts) ... Minford put up 23 points to the SW's 8 ... led by Mr. Consistent/M. Montgomery - 9 pts .. again getting 3 fgs off the dribble drive with FT's finishing off each drive 9pts in the qtr - outscoring SW on his own ball ... perimeter scoring came from the bigs for MHS ... 6-5 Kayser 5 pts/6-7 Hannah 5 pts both draining a 3 ball plus a deuce ... Shoemaker in the paint with back to back offensive boards and putback buckets (4 pts) ... Minford 56 South Webster 31 after 3 ... the Falcons of Coach Shoemaker had sucked the energy out of the gym in the opening 3 periods, the outcome was already determined, just a matter of getting through the final 8 minutes without injuries to key players for either side ... Minford was going to get the W once again on the South Webster home court, last season the teams split the series each losing at home or each winning on the oppositions home court ... South Webster went 3/6 in the 3 point category in the 4th ... White/Hunter Barnard/Mault each with a triple ... Tyler Summer added a pair buckets in the paint ... Dylan Shuppert 2/2 from the line rounded out the scoring on the night for the Jeeps ... Minford played out the 4th with Adam Crank hitting his 3rd trey of the game , Shoemaker with a putback bucket/Hannah an offensive board & bucket to go with a 2 hand slam for 2 more that opened the Falcon scoring in the period and punctuated the Minford "W" ... Minford 65 South Webster 46 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - South Webster

Scoring ... Tyler Summer 14, Eli Roberts 9, Dylan Shuppert 6, Owen Mault 6, Christian White 5, Hunter Barnard 3, Will Collins 3
3 Pointers ... 5/26 ... Owen Mault 2, Hunter Barnard 1, Christian White 1, Will Collins 1
FTs ... 9/11
TOs ... 7
PnP ... 10 fgs/ 20 points in the paint
PnT ... 0
Pbk ... 1 fg/ 2 points on putback buckets

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Minford

Scoring ... Myles Montgomery 25, Joe Hannah 12, Adam Crank 11, Jackson Shoemaker 9, Bennett Kayser 8
3 Pointers ... 6/21 ... Adam Crank 3, Joe Hannah 2, Bennett Kayser 1
FTs ... 9/12
TOs ... 6
PnP ... 16 fgs/ 32 points in the paint
PnT ... 2 fgs/ 4 points in transition
Pbk ... 5 fgs/ 10 points on putback buckets

... I have the Falcons of Coach Shoemaker & Coach Montgomery at the 1 spot in the Elite 8 ... seeing the Minford TEAM in person did nothing but solidify the ranking - size/length in the paint ... scoring in the paint (32 points last night)/5 fgs off of offensive boards) ... perimeter shooterS/scorers (not just one - Montgomery/Hannah/Kawser/Crank) ... players who when the 3 ball "ain't" falling can get to the rim and finish ... add in the one of, if not the best, PG Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line in Myles Montgomery ... Minford might have the best starting 5 out of the 71 teams in the SE District - no weaknesses in the starting 5 ... throw in the intangible - hardnosed/lots of energy at both ends on the boards - adds up to being in the #1 spot ...

Pfloyd, always a great rundown. Really thought it would be a lot closer game.

Nice rundown, glad you got to see Minford play they were the preseason favorites to win the SOC and Montgomery should win a lot of awards for sure. I think some are figuring out SW wasn't and isn't ready for the top spot. Most outside of SW had this as a double-digit Minford win.
