... the opening game of the Horizon Holiday Classic in Roundtown was between undefeated D2 Westfall (6-0) and 1 loss D3 Minford (6-1) ... an opportunity for the Mustangs of Westfall to go up against the junior duo of Myles Montgomery (PG) and big man, swing forward 6-6 Bennett Kayser ... while the Falcons of Coach Shoemaker were taking on a TEAM oriented/defensive minded/get out in transition/score on the perimeter Mustang squad led by sr. Brody Clarke ... the 1st period "got right into it" as Minford jumped out to a 10-3 advantage before Westfall called a timeout at 3:08 - the Falcons were led by Myles Montgomery's opening period 11 points combining 4 drives to the rim plus a three ball ... after the timeout the Mustangs went on an 8-3 run forcing MHS to call a TO leading 14-11 with :51 on the clock ... Minford scored the final 5 points on the Montgomery three point following a Bennett Kayser 2 pointer in the paint (4pts in the qtr) , senior Troy Rhodes/ junior Jackson Shoemaker pitched-in a bucket in the paint each ... the Mustangs got back in the game on 3/6 shooting from behind the arc (2 treys by Clarke(6pts) and 1 for Brandan Gall (3pts) with Henry Barnes chipping in 2pts on a drive to the rim ... Minford 19 Westfall 11 after 1 ... the 8 point spread was the closest the Mustangs would get in the game as Minford had too many weapons ... too many Falcon ball handlers that kept WHS from getting transition buckets (1 fg in transition for the game) ... too much inside game by Minford as the Falcons would score 40 points in the paint on the night & a Falcon D that kept the Mustang on the perimeter as Westfall put up 24 three pointers on the night (8/24) ... in the 2nd period the Minford D held Westfall to 3 fgs/ 6 points while getting 16 points on their own ball at the offensive end - senior Troy Rhodes led the scoring with 8pts in the period on a pair three's and a 2 pointer at the rim ... the BIG 3 for Minford added to the scoring column Montgomery with 4pts/Shoemaker 2pts/Kayser 2 pts ... for Westfall - Joe Wray 2pts/ Bryan Craig 2pts and Henry Barnes 2pts ... Minford 35 Westfall 17 at the half ... the lead was never threatened as it hovered around the 13-20pt mark most of the 2nd half ... a combination of "interesting" foul calls and the shooting of Brody Clarke closed the lead to 13 at the end of the 3rd period ... Clarke knocking down 11 points in the quarter (3 treys /5 thru 3 periods) / his running mate PG Wray added 5pts and Gall a 2 pointer ... the 3rd period for the Falcons was one where due to "many things" the offense never found a rhythm - Montgomery 2 pts an uncharacteristic 0/2 from the line/ sr. Jeffrey Pica 2 pts on a drive and 2/2 FTs / Shoemaker 1/2 from the stripe/ Kayser led the way with 6 pts a pair fgs in the paint and 2/4 from the free throw line ... Westfall outscored Minford 18-13 in the quarter ... Minford 48 Westfall 35 after 3 ... sitting in the cheap seats, I never felt that outcome of this one was ever in question ... the margin was always a comfortable one for the Falcons as MHS made 9/12 FTs down the stretch ... keeping pace with Brody Clarke's 10 points in the quarter for Westfall ... a 3 ball from Montgomery matched a triple by WHS's Joe Wray (7 pts in the period) ... the highlight of the qtr were a back to back 2 handed slams from Falcon swing forward Bennett Kayser ... Rhodes/ Kade Glockner each added a bucket ... in the end Minford had too much balanced scoring as Coach Shoemaker played 6 and got points from all 6 players ... Minford 68 Westfall 54 a final ...
