Warren 57 Bloom Carroll 51 a final (Spartan Classic)

Warren 57
Bloom Carroll 51 a final

... I've sat in the cheap seats for many, many of the in-season classics - BIG FAN here! ... if the organizers do it right everyone benefits - probably the biggest benefit is that there are "fans" in seats! choosing teams that will PUT those fans in seats is a must - you either go with ALL local teams , go with teams that fans don't normally get to see that have talent that locals don't normally get to see OR you put together teams YOU KNOW have talent or will have talent (based on what you knew from last season- you put the menu's of these classics together a year in advance or MORE) ... THEN you have to have solid, competitive matchups that will "guarantee as close as possible" - games that are exciting for the fans, that will give the participating teams - a non-league matchup, that pushes players & TEAMs so coaches, players, fans learn something about the teams involved ... Warren vs Bloom Carroll fit the bill on all levels , for both teams ... Warren 57 Bloom Carroll 51 a final ...

... in the South East District, Warren ranks near the top on anyones rankings - TEAM basketball - TEAM offense, TEAM defense .. the Warriors of Coach Maddox entered Saturdays "marquee" game with a 6-2 record - having not lost to an Ohio team on the season ... Bloom Carroll playing in one of the most competitive divisions/leagues in Central Ohio - the Mid State League - Buckeye with members Bloom Carroll , Circleville, Teays Valley, Hamilton Twp, Fairfield Union, Liberty Union,Logan Elm & Amanda-Clearcreek ... the Bulldogs of Coach Ryan sported a 4-3 record - having beaten 5-2 Granville, 5-2 Northside Christian as part of a 4-0 winning streak ...

... the opening quarter saw both teams feeling out one another with Bloom Carroll showcasing "what you will have to stop if you are going beat BC" : 6-8 sophomore Carson Davis ... Davis led the Bulldogs with 6 pts in the qtr with a pair of touch shots in the paint, along with a putback bucket off of an offensive board ... BC attacked the rim with 5 fgs in the quarter all on the block or at the rim ... Davis 6pts/ Park Truex 2pts/Jackson Wyant 2pts, Jayse Rockwood 6-2 sr. got the FT Line going 2/2 ... the Warriors struggled from the perimeter as they went 1/6 from behind the 3point line with jr. Connor Barry connecting on the only trey for WHS to go with a 2 pointer in the paint (5pts) ... the offensive leader for Warren Julian Stadelman was able to get on the napkin stat sheet taking a BC turnover to the rim for 2pts ... Bloom Carroll 12 Warren 7 end of 1 ... the 2nd period in hindsight was a blueprint for the rest of the game - Bloom Carroll jumping out to 8-10 pt leads only to be reeled back in by the Warren defense and 3 point shooting ... entering the 2nd Warren trailed by 5 (7-12) with 29 seconds into the quarter the Warriors had turned the ball over twice, BC getting a bucket on the block from 6-2 sr. Jayse Rockwood - timeout Warren with 7:31 on the clock ... Warren was getting beat inside - between BC's 6-8 Davis, 6-2 Rockwood & jr. 6-2 linebacker like Park Truex ... the trio kept Warren's big man in the middle sr. 6-6 Trent Taylor under control/ off the scoreboard ... 0 pts in the opening 2 quarters ... BC has 6-8 size in the middle with Davis, to go with 6-2 bookends in Truex and Park ... both a good complement to Davis when the big man goes outside on the perimeter (the Big Man is a threat to hit the 3 pointer) taking the opposing big with him - Rockwood does damage in the paint - in the 2nd the swing/scoring forward hit for 11 points including a triple from the corner ... Davis after getting the Warren defensive attention in the 1st was still able to get on the offensive boards for a putback 2 and nice spin move in the paint for 2 points above the blocks ... good teams aren't one dimensional , when the opponent takes away "something" you have to have a plan B ... if you follow Warren hoops, you know that a point of emphasis is defense ... defense travels whether you're at home, or the road ... Warren puts pressure on the ball, puts pressure on players trying to get to "their" spots on the floor ... in the 2nd the Warriors were able to turn the Bulldogs over 6 times ... 2 miscues going for transition buckets ... following the timeout Warren was able to outscore BC 17-11 ... most of the damage coming in a late quarter blitz as the Warriors drained 3 three pointers in a row down the stretch (2 from downtown by Julian Stadelman and 1 from Connor Barry ) to go with a Jacob Sealey steal and finish at the rim to draw Warren to within one ... Bloom Carroll 25 Warren 24 at the half ... Coach Davis' Bulldogs opened the 3rd with a 7-0 run ... Rockwood with 2 buckets in the paint (4pts) , a Truex 3 ball forced a Warren timeout 5:18 on the clock, BC 32-24 advantage (or in this case maybe not as the script says Warriors will fall behind by 8 points THEN hit a flurry of 3's to get back into the game) ... right on cue, Warren went on a 7-0 run with a Jacob Sealey 3 pter/ followed by a Barry corner 3 & 1 made the score 34-31 Bulldogs with 3:41 to play in the 3rd ... Davis for BC picked up a pair of 2 pointers down low to go with Park Truex's 2nd three pointer in the qtr from the corner ... for Warren Stadelman did Stadelman "things" as the jr. hit the final 7 points of the period for WHS going 2/2 from the line, getting a steal and taking it the length of the court for 2 followed by quarter ending triple from behind the arc ... Bloom Carroll 40 Warren 38 after 3 ... Warren through 3 quarters were "thiiiiiiisssssss" close to taking leads ... but didn't as BC took the Warren flurry of 3's in each of the middle 2 quarters , came out of each with leads at quarters end ... what BC had done, is what good TEAMS/Coaches do - look at the opposition, the matchups and see what you can take away from an opponent at the offensive end - BC looked at Warren, the matchups, and said IF we can take away or hold Trent Taylor in check - the Warren inside presence - they would have a chance ... 6-8 Davis negates a lot of what a team wants to do inside, Davis didn't guard the 6-6 Taylor ... it was a combination of the linebacker like Truex and the strong/athletic Roockwood who tag teamed guarding Taylor ... through 3 quarters the 6-6 Taylor was unable to add to the WHS point total ... IF the Warriors were going to get a W, the 6-6 senior would have to be a factor on the scoreboard ... through 3 Warren was able to get only 2points from their big men - Chase Lupardus had 2 points in the 2nd ... Taylor 0 ... Warren had to win the 4th quarter, the only way you win the 4th quarter was going inside first with the perimeter game being the 2nd option ... in the 4th just like you draw it up if you're on the Warren bench Trent Taylor looked to get to the rim , the Warriors in getting to the rim were able to take a lead ... Taylor scored 7 points, Lupardus 4 points all in the paint including 2 offensive boards for points ... Stadelman added 4 pts. with a transition bucket ... at 1:19 left in the game Warren had opened a 5 point advantage 53-48 ... Bloom Carroll was led in the period by Jackson Wyant hitting a trey at the end of the game and 1/2 from the line (4pts) / Carson Davis added a putback bucket 2pts/ 16 for the game ... Jeff Jones off the bench added 2pts/Rockwood 1/2 from the line and Tryce Chaffin with 2pts ... Warren 57 Bloom Carroll 51 a final ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Bloom Carroll

TOs .... 15
PnP .... 16 fgs/ 32 points in the paint
PnT ....0
Pbk ..... 3 fgs/ 6 points on putback buckets

... Bloom Carroll under Coach Ryan Davis will be fine! a solid team with a solid group of players and team built around 6-8 sophomore Carson Davis (Coach Davis son) ... It was great to see the Davis family last night ! Coach Davis' parents Fred & Mary - doing this for over 20 years you meet people! friends in sports I suppose - friends none the less ... the Davis' family are good people ... it was a pleasure getting to shake Carson Davis' hand when I presented him with the plaque as the BC player of the game ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - Warren

3 Pointers .... 7/21 ... Julian Stadelman 3, Connor Barry 3, Jacob Sealey 1

TOs ... 14
PnP .... 12 fgs/ 24 points in the paint
PnT ..... 5 fgs/ 10 points in transition
Pbk ... 2 fgs/ 4 points on putback buckets

... adjustments, motivation, getting the most out of your players on any given day in any given game - I heard lots from many coaches yesterday as my seat at the scorers' table gave me access to the "coaching" taking place all day ... BC took away a key offensive weapon in Trent Taylor for 3 quarters but games are a dollar (4 quarters long) ... that final 25 cents/ quarter , Trent Taylor went to the rack, did what TEAM needed - getting points in the paint ... when Taylor forced his way to inside points it opened up Chase Lupardus on the opposite block - Lupardus got 2 fgs to give WHS 11 points on the blocks in the 4th ... game, set and match ...

Hated to miss the game but caught it online, always appreciate your write-up and insight. Thought Barry stepped up and provided a nice scoring boost when Taylor was limited in scoring, would like to see that effort from Barry continue. Would still like to have that 3rd guy to step up into the offense when Stadelman is having an off nighty or Taylor is kept in check, whether that's Barry or someone else.

from the Cheap Seats - I feel the thinking IS that Barry can be that guy with his 3 point shooting ability, not physical enough to be able to go inside and "GET" a bucket ... Sealey can hit the three ball and IS physical - lacks the size to go inside among the trees ... it seems that of late they are trying to get Cochran & Cressey more minutes as they both can score the ball and ARE physical enough to go inside - they still don't APPEAR to be comfortable on the offensive end "being" an offensive threat ... imo Lupardus has to be MORE of a scoring threat - not just a "board guy" ... he gets the ball down on the blocks - looks to pass it back out as a priority rather than using his frame to "GET" shots ... the best game I've seen him play was vs Linsly as he looked like a scoring threat - he appeared to "look to score" , no hesitation vs the bigger players on Linsly ... I'm of the camp that believes Warren has Taylor, Stadelman who are their consistent double figure scorers with Stadelman the 18-20+ pt guy, Taylor 15-20 pt guy ... Barry has to be a 3 trey/game guy 12 ppg ... Lupardus inside on the blocks 10+ ppg even if there aren't any plays run to get him the ball - he has to have the mindset that he is "getting his"/ crashing the offensive boards to get putback buckets - at least 3/4 a game ... he should get matchups in most games that he should get at least 2 fgs per game in the offense/use that lefthand advantage ... Sealey has been running point more of late - less shooting opportunities but he has to take what he is given/ not get pigeonholed into "just passing the ball" has to hit the 2-3 shoots he is given when the ball goes down inside, his man doubles down - he has to be the guy that makes the defense pay for the double down on Taylor and Lupardus / same with Barry THEY have to make teams pay for the double teams ... Cressey and Cochran are being groomed to score more in the last 3 or 4 games - they have to be confident in their offensive skills - as they have them ! - along with good size to take their defender inside where their physicality is an advantage - right now they look like they aren't sure of their offensive roles - yet ... growth as a player - it doesn't happen over night ... young players still who aren't sure of themselves in the offensive roles of "scoring the rock" ... they'll figure it out! Warren IS a good TEAM who's players are taking on additional roles. they are "thinking" still instead of "reacting/trusting their skills - they have them! - letting go, stop thinking and taking to heart the Nike slogan "Just Do It" ...
