Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio - Week #5

Post by pfloyd »

Difficult week to rank teams!!! 6 of the top 8 teams posted "losses" with South Point dropping 2 games in the Week that Was ... out of the next 12 teams from last weeks rankings only 5 had unblemished records this past week of action ... THE ONLY team standing in the SE District no matter the division is D4 Fairfield Leesburg ... the Lions of Coach Quentin Williams went 22-0 last season in the regular season, this season standing at 12-0 ... looking at their schedule - they beat Federal Hocking over the break on a neutral court , just beat Western last night 45-42 at home ... looking at potential hurdles for "a second consecutive" undefeated regular season - Eastern Brown, North Adams, Hillsboro (although the 'boro lost big to Adena Saturday night) , Miami Trace ...

... More BIG games that will make ranking in the upcoming "Week that IS" difficult include - South Webster @ Minford, Marietta @ Warren , Fairland @ Chesapeake, Portsmouth @ Ironton, Gallia Academy @ South Point as the Pointers look to get back on the winning track after dropping 2 this past week - but on a positive note - Xathan Haney almost singlehandedly brought SP back at Fairland - knocking down 15 points in the 4th quarter/3 triples included - losing 59-61 ... look for the Lovely/Haney/Smith trio to be very dangerous in the OVC moving forward for SP ... Fairfield Union @ Logan Elm will be big in the MSL as FU tries to break it's 4 game losing streak albeit to solid teams in Teays Valley/Hamilton Twp,/Sheridan/Circleville ... great time of the year !!! everyone has settled in on starters/rotations/ players roles have been defined - time to hone skills, tighten the D ... the extra time AFTER practice - shooting ... gonna be the difference down the road as teams begin to look at wins/losses and seeding for the post season ... us cheap seat guys - we're eating it up as we get into the final weekend of the in-season classics, the Chad Hodson Classic was this past weekend at Fairfield Leesburg, this coming weekend the Dave Young Classic 1/13/24 @ North Adams High School ...

As always, the Christmas/New Years break is difficult to keep records "accurate" even with MaxPreps and Scorestream as teams sneak across the Ohio River to play those foreign teams in West Virginia/Kentucky heck Coal Grove went to North Carolina to play 3 games! ... then throw in that I'm reading off of my napkin stat record sheets ... my eyes "ain't" what they used to be, I believe last week I copied down the wrong records or put down the record of 4 teams either above or below the team I was typing the record in for - those who noticed were gentle in correcting me - greatly appreciated ! ...

I’ll get see and do rundowns on teams I don’t normally see during the regular season … giving some players a chance to be “HIM” for their respective schools Saturday ! All fun running into the hoops fans, coaches West of Rte 23 … normally a couple of the OVC teams are there as well .., this year South Point & Chesapeake… along with Symmes Valley … looking forward to the 8 games !

My only switch I’d make is down the line, with Adena over Hillsboro. That was ugly from the get go and the Warriors have now won 5 straight and I think will turn that it 7 straight after this week.

Something clicked for them after the loss to West at Logan and while I thought it was due to the schedule, the win over Hillsboro was very impressive.

Agree! I feel sorry for fans in other areas of Ohio who don’t have a pfloyd analyzing their teams.

Although South Point has dropped to number 13 on the list they are one of the better and well coached teams in the district when they play as a team they can play with anybody in the district

… I was really encouraged seeing Haney take over in the 4th … 15 pts in the qtr - almost got the Pointers all the way back vs Fairland … as I posted on another thread - Lovely/ Haney / Smith is an outstanding trio of scorers … SP has a bunch of opportunities to move back up the rankings being in the OVC having to play Fairland, Ironton who are in front of them … aren’t they playing at SSU this weekend as well ?

After watching SP against Fairland , the Pointers are really missing Ermalovich .

I definitely agree with the teams at the top... but I also think there are some sleepers in that #9-25 group.
Couple of those teams had some games slip away early, but are starting to pull it together.
I believe there will be some ~.500 teams that will NOT be an easy draw come tournament time.
Just the way all of us bball :30 fans like it.
