Too many on the End Table! Although West Union losing to a short handed Southeastern by 42 doesn’t help their argument.

I’m interested in seeing Meigs in the rematch with Vinton County and Adena keeps winning, 7 straight for the Warriors.

Westfall vs Zane Trace on Friday will be one to keep an eye on, the Mustangs need to be more competitive, especially with both teams without their PGs.

Just a few brief comments for now.

Marietta -- No argument here, but they may have a couple issues to resolve to stay here. Lost 5 lettermen from last year's team so this ranking is flat out remarkable. Did they even make the top 8 all season long in '22-'23?
Warren -- Probably can't be ranked higher than this for now, but could still end up No. 1 before the end of the year.
Vinton County -- I'd still have them in the top 8.
New Lexington -- They are No. 3 in the OHSAA Playoff rankings right now. I'd have them in the top 8 or 10 for sure.
Meigs -- I'd probably have them near the top 10. Is strength of schedule holding them back?

I know it is easy to say a team should be higher without mentioning teams that should be demoted. Just attempting to generate some additional reaction from the group. Thanks as always pfloyd for your work.

Not trying to “make a case” for Waverly as they are starting 3 Freshman with 4 Freshmen on floor at times, and struggling as a team to score.
I found it interesting 3 of their losses have been close games to 3 teams in the Elite 8 and they are 1 of only 2 teams to beat Northwest. Tigers beat the Mohawks 60-50 while top 8 South Webster beat them 59-47, nearly identical score.

Looking for the Tigers to continue to get better and hopefully the shots will start falling.

Marietta - beat Warren the #1 team ... I feel they are better than both Minford and Fairfield Leesburg ... I feel Warren is better than both Minford and Fairfield as well BUT both the Falcons and the Lions won, not dropping them for taking care of business ... the Tigers? - THE issue I see is handling pressure - Warren turned them over 23 times (on my napkin stat sheet) - 9 in the 3rd and 5 more in the 4th ... a few posters have pointed out that Warren needs a 3rd scorer - vs Marietta THAT was magnified and the same issue that "hurt WHS" in their previous 2 losses - hit them again - empty possessions ... they did a great job on Kendall - Sealey at 5-10 on Kendall allowed the 6-8 Kendall 1 fg through 2 qtrs when he was guarding him (Kendall had 5pts but 3 were on the sub when Sealey got a blow in the 2nd) ... Wittekind was outstanding - the Tiger's 3rd guy scoring - got 22 on my napkin stat sheet - from LAST season to THIS season Wittekind IS the guy that worries the WHS staff - he can do it all at both ends - scores outside, goes inside, jumps outta the gym - tough matchup ... Kendall ended up with 19 (on my stat sheet) - Warren stepped back from him in the 3rd at the top of the key - the big man drained the BIG trey ... once Marietta took the ball out of the guards hands and put it in Kendall's hands on the perimeter it cut down on the TOs but also gave the big man space he didn't have in the paint - with space to move the big man is dangerous (9pts in the 4th) ... great defensive battle for sure ... so you're right imo Marietta has to cleanup the perimeter handling of the ball - 23 TOs won't have you coming out on top too many times ... for now - Tigers are in the rare air of #1 in the rankings ...

Warren ... empty possessions ... in need of a 3rd consistent scorer OR more of those on the floor "looking to score"... a lot is handed to Stadelman and Taylor to "be the guys" ... they can be even "more effective as THE guys" if the supporting cast becomes more offensive minded in the flow of the offense imo ...

Vinton County ... VC is deep, 9 man rotation, has 2 bigs, shooters on the perimeter, "scorers" - guys that will "go get you a basket" , good PG - Cobra Sharp can do it all - get to the rim, shoot the three, handles the ball , distributes the ball ... lots to like about VC !!! Lost back to back to Chillicothe IN McArthur and on the road to South Webster - makes their marque wins Meigs and ZT ... I'm looking at the stretch of games coming up in February Marietta, Washington CH and Jackson to tell us what VC has compared to the other Elite 8 teams ...

New Lex - good win over Coshocton, the only other teams that I consider quality competition so far were John Glen ( by 2 at NL) and @ Big Walnut (-27) both losses ... THIS coming week @ Tri Valley and then home the following week vs Maysville will tell me a bunch ... the only other competition will be vs Coshocton the last game of the season - strength of schedule has a lot to be desired ...

Meigs ... strength of schedule is keeping them in a SLOW climb ... lost to Gallia (opening night) - they would probably beat GAHS now ... @ VC - lost by 10 points ... a good W at Chesapeake by 3 pts ... again to move into the upper echelon of teams , teams need more than just a good record imo this week will start to tell us more ! - vs Belpre, vs Vinton Co - round 2 , NY at home on the 26th, ... @ Marietta 2/2 and @ Jackson 2/6 ... Meigs will have to win vs the teams ranked ahead of them to move up much further - yes I know about the Chesapeake win / Meigs has been moving up to the Chesapeake level ... without a win over VC, Marietta or Jackson, right around 20 is their upper limit ... but I plan to see them vs either Belpre or Vinton County this week - so I'll see for myself how they compare to teams from #20 to #1 ...

I feel Warren is better than both Minford and Fairfield as well BUT both the Falcons and the Lions won, not dropping them for taking care of business ... the Tigers? - THE issue I see is handling pressure - Warren turned them over 23 times (on my napkin stat sheet) - 9 in the 3rd and 5 more in the 4th ... a few posters have pointed out that Warren needs a 3rd scorer - vs Marietta THAT was magnified and the same issue that "hurt WHS" in their previous 2 losses - hit them again - empty possession ... they did a great job on Kendall - Sealey at 5-10 on Kendall allowed the 6-8 Kendall 1 fg through 2 qtrs when he was guarding him (Kendall had 5pts but 3 were on the sub when Sealey got a blow in the 2nd) ...

Thanks for the additional perspective pfloyd. Are you doing a projection/preview report for this week’s games?
... I never try to project or even think I know how teams will play vs other teams LOL ... we have so many examples of teams of lower rank taking it to a higher ranked team THEN turn around themselves and lose to a team ranked lower than themselves ... makes ranking tough! that's why you have to take everything into consideration "over the course of the season" ...

Good games to watch Tuesday night 1/16 :

Eastern Brown vs Fairfield Leesburg - IF I didn't have a day job I'd be at THIS one ... EB beat a very good Blanchester team at the Dave Young Classic Saturday 45-44 ... Coach Beucler has assembled a really nice team ... 10 man rotation ... 3 seniors start but the rest of the rotation is 1 soph - leading scorer 6-2 Grady Barber (13ppg) and 6 juniors ... they will be strong again next season ... Luke Haney 6-3ish sr. is solid in the paint for EB ... the Beucler "system" is built on solid D ... EB won't blow you out but will "fundamental" you to death at both ends of the floor ... Coach Beucler is 1 win away from 450 Wins in his 28 season coaching tenure - he's one of those coaches who you "have to" sit behind the bench & hear the teaching/coaching - you learn something every time guaranteed ... Fairfield Leesburg hasn't lost a regular season game 2 seasons /35+ regular over 2+ seasons - incredible stuff ... Larkin Friend is the floor general - as solid of a PG as they come ... Friend/Trey House/Gabe Fouch are pieces from last seasons Convo District Final team ... I looked at Fairfield's schedule not many teams left to "push" them - Eastern Brown, North Adams 1/26, Miami Trace 2/6 ... EB vs Fairfield a good matchup as EB is strong in the paint with Haney and Barber able to get where he wants with his 6-2 solid frame ... both teams play good D, both are comfortable with a low scoring game ... it's at Eastern Brown - might be the difference in the game ... SOSA needs to broadcast this one - daniC !!! maybe Good Guys TV/Radio are doing it already ...

Minford vs Portsmouth ... great matchup, I sat in the cheap seats with trojandave, biggdawgg, & daniC last year when this one was played at PHS - great crowd, great game through halftime Minford led 33-32 ... an active shooter threat sent us all home without the teams getting a chance to complete the final 2 qtrs ...Tuesday night? Portsmouth is a better team than last season's squad - a jekyll and hyde team but better nonetheless ... DeAndre Berry/Breech/Lewis/Loper/Livingston vs Montgomery/Kayser/Shoemaker/Pica/Rhodes ... Minford at home vs Portsmouth, then on the road Friday @ Wheelersburg - BIG week for the Falcons who haven't lost to a team from the SE District this season (dropping one early to an 8-4 New Albany team) ... a fun week to watch great hoops if you follow Minford ...

Vinton Co vs Federal Hocking ... I posted what I liked about VC above - one of those "complete TEAMS" has it all at all levels - inside with Hire/Allman ... Garrett Brown the guy who is big enough/strong enough to back you down inside to score or can knockdown the 3 ball consistently , Cobra Sharp - oustanding PG inside/outside scorer, handles the ball/distributes the ball ... the entire team scores the 3 ball - extending the opponents defense which opens the lanes -passing and driving ... physical defensive team is VC ... Federal Hocking - Drew Airhart and Tariq Cottrill the dynamic duo both 1000 point scorers ... love watching them play ... Coach Thompson and Coach Tolson have done an outstanding job of building a team around the 2 scorers - Cam Joy the 3rd scorer/ Mosiah Cottrill/Evan McPhearson finish out the hustle/rebounding side of the Lancers ... not sure they have the horses in the paint to play all 4 qtrs with the inside game of VC ... will be a fun game to watch from the Cheap Seats in McArthur ...

other games of note:

Warren @ Parkersburg ... Coach Maddox's Warriors regrouping after the loss to Marietta, needing to get a W @ Parkersburg after losing on a neutral court - Marietta College - back in December over Christmas break to the Big Red ...

Trimble vs Nelsonville York
... NY has a nice ball club! saw them at the Alexander Spartan Classic in December - Keagan Swope dropped 27 pts/3 treys on Waterford that day in a 56-50 Buckeye W ... NY played 7 in Coach Gabriels rotation - all 7 scored ... nice team ... Coach Howie Caldwell's Trimble Tomcats are as tough as they come - as usual - tough man to man D, fundamentally sound ... what they lack in size they "take from you" in hustle/hardnose basketball - Brandon Burdette/Kaden Kempton/Levi Weber/Michael Clark/Cole Wright - same group/starters from last season, , all with varsity experience , all seniors ... the Tomcats stand at 8-4 ... a home W vs NY in a rivalry game - would be a good start to Week #7 for the THS ...

Just FYI, if Cotrill is out for Fed Hock in their game vs Vinton County, it may not be much of a game. He looked to be in a boot In their game Saturday night.

... ouch, THAT will hurt (no puns intended) - TC makes the Fed Hock team run literally and figuratively at both ends of the floor ... hopefully the boot is precautionary to keep him from putting his full weight on it (similar to Will Davis had on when he sat out the Linsly game at the Ironton Classic - he was back on the court in the next game - although seeing limited action) ... Tariq is such a good player at both ends of the floor/ an all around player - hope he isn't out for long ... as he is a "competitor" - doesn't take NOT being on the court well ...

Federal Hocking's Non-Conference menu :

Vinton County 10-2 (D2 on the road Elite 8 now #11 overall in the SE district
Marietta 11-1 x 2 (Home and Home) (D2 Elite 8 #1)
Warren 10-3 (D2 Elite #1 for 6 weeks)
South Webster 11-2 (D4 #2 ranked RPI in SE District behind Fairfield Lees.)
Fairfield Leesburg 13-0 (D4 #1 ranked RPI in SE District in D4)

Western Pike D4 (great game vs a team that is the mirror image of themselves on the road)
Lucasville Valley D4
Morgan - East District

Overall records combined: 73-33 before you count Marietta a 2nd time making it 84-34 ! ... my hat goes off to FH playing UP, and taking on the best of the best in D2, and D4 (Fairfield Leesburg)

GoodGuys will be at Eastern Brown on Tuesday, as we had looked for that game, but won’t be able to. At least they’ll be there!

I feel bad for Meigs. Seems like whenever they have a decent team they find themselves in D2.

We will have Thursday’s game at Unioto. That’ll be our only boys game of the week due to prior commitments (and I don’t know how to set anything up lol)

I was heading to Meigs tonight - postponed the game until February ... might catch them Friday vs Vinton County now ... have to see the rest of the menu of games before I commit however ... Meigs seems to ALWAYS have players 93dog BUT they also seem to always battle injuries with not just 1 player but multiple players ALL season - in the past anyway ... this year it appears the injury bug has passed them over - knocking on wood ...

Actually their best player has been out with injury since the first vinton county game and he is out for the rest of the season after having to have surgery

Yes 6'5" versatile guard Braylon Harrison is an absolute phenomenal player and athlete. Would've been one of the best in the league this year. Then an awkward landing on a breakaway dunk vs VC tore his ACL.
Meigs does have back sharp shooter Brayden Stanley after having to sit out all of last season with a football injury.
Burnem, Cleland, Gheen are all solid and big man Dustin Vance is one of the most underrated in the league.
Add in 6'4" freshman Bringer who will without a doubt be a future 1000pt scorer along with freshman PG Tracy.
They seem to be a really close group as well.

Going to have to try to get to Vinton County @ Meigs Friday night it looks like ... What does one do if you have a the day off due to a " frigid temp day" at school ? Just finished watching Point Pleasant vs Fort Frye, Fairfield Leesburg vs Cedarville, Northwest vs Valley, Northwest vs South Webster and New Boston vs Symmes Valley - a pfloyd studying film day! ... disappointed when I got back from ZT last night that the goodguystv didn't do the Fairfield Leesburg @ Eastern Brown game ... felt EB had a good chance to win that one at home ... apparently DID right up to 47 seconds in regulation when the Lions made up an 8-9 point deficit , going on to win in OT ... Coach Williams' Lions are for real at 14-0 ...
