Warren 54 New Lexington 46 SE District D2 final ...

Post by pfloyd »

Warren 54
New Lexington 46 a final

... New Lex entered the finale having knocked off #1 seed Marietta 43-40 ... Warren a 20 point winner over Logan Elm 54-34 ... both teams sporting rosters with but 1 senior - New Lex 6-2, sr. Jerek Braglin - coming off of holding Marietta big man Alex Kendall to 17 points in their semi final game... Warren's 6-7 sr Trent Taylor was held to 9 pts by Logan Elm in the WHS semi win ... New Lex had held the #1 seed Tigers to only one player in double figure scoring while their duo of guards - Isaiah Stephens 16pts & Bentley Hanson 18 pts were able to get to the rim with ease for the Panthers ...the Warriors in their 20 pt win were led by jr. PG Julian Stadelman's 29 pts (13 shy of the career 1000 point milestone) with the only other double digit scorer - Hayden Wells off the bench for 10 pts ... New Lexington in holding Marietta to 40 pts and holding their big man in check along the other MHS scoring threats - seemingly had "the blueprint" for taking on Warren (MHS with Kendall as the big/Leiras-Kelley the quick, get to the rim PG) ... NL is blessed with a pair of guards in Stephens/Hanson who can get to the paint/rim & finish ... any number of perimeter scorers - Hanson/Stephens the elder/ freshman Lane Ratliff/ Eli Stephens fr. big off the bench & Braglin ... on the Warren plus side they are blessed with a deep bench, size in Taylor/Lupardus/ Wells ... perimeter scoring from Connor Barry/Jacob Sealey of late AND Julian Stadelman - inside/outside/off the dribble/ in transition - the young man is simply "a baller" ... sometimes in preparation for a "big game" teams will OVER prepare - if that's possible - sometimes the best thing you can do is to look at what you do best, put it out there and "force the opposition to stop you" ... Warren 54 New Lex 46 OT a final ...

... if you 're a Warren fan - the game couldn't have started any better as the Warriors went on an 8-0 run out of the gate , as the Warren Big 2 flexed their muscles with Julian Stadelman scoring on a drive to the rim 2pts/ the 6-7 Taylor finished a drive into the paint for 2pts / Stadelman a stickback bucket 2pts & his 2nd drive to the rim ... @ 4:58 Warriors 8-0 ...during the 8-0 run Warren had pressured NL 3/4 court after made shots- very effectively obviously - no NL turnovers but forced the tempo up/missed NL shots ... after the timeout , soph Paul Stenson scored low on the blocks 2pts/ off the bench Eli Stephens knockdown a trey ... 5-8 Warren ... a Bentley Hanson midrange jumper 2pts ... 8-7 WHS ... game on ... New Lex took the blows early, settled into "playing their game" - the mix of slowing down the pace/ having the inside/outside option ... Warriors answered with a Trent Taylor dunk 2pt (4pts in the period) ...a putback for NL by Stephens the younger 2pts/5 in the qtr off the bench ... Colin Anthony with a steal & 2pt transition bucket ... Warren 12 New Lex 9 after 1 ... The Panthers were back in the game after the initial "punch in the mouth" by Warren ... in the 2nd New Lex got more into being New Lex as the Panthers had a good mix of getting into the paint and getting points on the perimeter spreading the wealth as Braglin/Hanson & Ratliff each drained a 3 ball in the quarter as New Lex outscored Warren 15-12 ... for Warren Stadelman showed his arsenal of offensive weapons as the junior went off for 8 pts/14 in the half including a midrange jumper that gave the PG/SG 1001 points on his career ... the only other points for the Warriors were a fg each by Taylor and Nick Cressey off the bench with a putback basket ... Warren 24 New Lex 24 after 2 ... at the midway point Warren was 0/7 from behind the arc , led 17-11 on the boards, 20 of the 24 Warrior points were inside the paint ... New Lex was 4/11 from three, bench points were 5-4 NL, both teams were 2/2 from the line, both teams 3 TOs each ... gets you to 24-24 at intermission ... halftime is for looking at both the offense and defense of the opening 2 qtrs, coming up with adjustments ... New Lex came out of the locker room face guarding Stadelman, the junior went 0 for the qtr on the napkin stat sheet with the NL freshman Lane Ratliff shadowing the WHS guard everywhere on the court ... Taylor picked up 2 fgs in the paint 4pts/10 thru 3 qtrs ... jr. power forward Chase Lupardus added 2pts down low & Hayden Wells came off the bench for 2pts on the blocks subbing in for Lupardus ... New Lex matched Warren with Isaiah Stephens taking the ball into the paint for a pair of 2 pt drives/ Hanson added a drive to the rim & 1 to go with his 2nd mid range jumper from the FT line ... NL continued to show the ability to drive the lane and score, Stenson stepped out drained a 3 ball ... New Lex won the quarter 12-8 ... held Stadelman scoreless in the period ... New Lexington 36 Warren 32 after 3 ... it IS true Warren offensively has the identity of being a 2 headed monster - Taylor & Stadelman - rightly so as both are 1000 point scorers, Mr. Inside and Mr. Everything BUT Warren is a TEAM , a 7-8 man rotation in the post season, with pieces that can hurt you offensively outside of anyone named Taylor/Stadelman ... enter Jacob Sealey , the jr. defensive specialist has probably the BEST 3 point stroke on the team ... Sealey was left open in the left corner - the jr. drained a 3 ball to open the 4th and final quarter ... 36-35 New Lex ... defense wins championships - both teams showed a lot of it, as well as New Lex taking the air out of the ball - slowing down the offense ... the score stayed at 36-35 NL with 4:38 on the clock ... Eli Stehens hit a deuce on the blocks ... 38-35 NL 3:59 to play in the game ... Stadelman took the ball to the rim 2pts ... 38-37 NL ... back to back Stadelman strip & score transition buckets ... Warren 41-38 with 35.7 on the game clock ... Bentley Hanson for New Lex drained a 3 pter in front of the NL bench 41-41 10.3 to play ... New Lex with fouls to give fouled the Warriors on 3 successive offensive attempts ... timeout Warren 7.2 on the clock ... a Warren last second attempt failed... with $1 worth (4 quarters) of basketball in the books ... 41-41 after regulation ... now one of the "thangs" that the fouling of Warren ballhandlers in that final 10 seconds or so did was put Warren 1 foul short of the double bonus as foul numbers in the 4th are carried over into the OT ... New Lex had 4 fouls carried over, Warren 2 ... Mr. Sealey gave the Warriors a 3 point lead as he hit his 2nd trey of the game ... Stephens the Elder added a NL 2pts with a drive to the rim ... Taylor fouled , 1/2 from the line ... Stephens with the 3 pter 46-45 New Lex ... Taylor for 2 down low ... Warren 47-46 ... Warren being in the bonus did everything right, got to the line going 5/6 from the line down the stretch to push the lead to 52-46 ... New Lex was 1 & done on the offensive end as the Warrior bigs controlled the boards, forced 2 NL turnovers ... Trent Taylor put an exclamation mark on the Warrior W as the 6-7 post player, took an outlet pass at just over the half court line, slammed the ball home with 2 hands as the buzzer sounded ... the Warriors are in the Sweet 16, D2 District Champs and coming back to the Convo ... Warren 54 New Lexington 46 a final

Good win. Next up, a tough Tri Valley team. Size wise maybe comparable to Linsly?

... according to MaxPreps rosters, they don't have anyone over 6-4 but they have a BUNCH of 6-4 guys LOL ... Just matched the numbers with names from when I watched the Tri Valley vs Maysville game ... Starters - Lyall 6-3, Darden 6-3, Neal 6-4, Nichols 6-4, Lamonica 6-4 off the bench Crane 6-4 the only seniors are Darden & Neal so they will be solid next year as well ...
