Once again, the OVC comes down to Coal Grove/South Point. I must admit that I haven't been following this year's squad like I normally do, but I'm sure Coach Miller will have the girls ready to go. I might have to catch this one. I haven't seen South Point's new gym yet and I hear it's a very nice facility 8)

Good Luck Hornets

Lady Pointers defeat Coal Grove to win OVC
By: T. J. Layne

SOUTH POINT, OH-A lot was on the line for the January 31st season finale as the Lady Pointers hosted OVC conference rival Coal Grove. The winner of the game would be the OVC conference champion and a win would put head coach Dave Adams at 100 career wins. It was also “Senior Night” for T’Ann Mayo, Morgan Kelley, and Tara Bailey. One of, if not the largest, crowds in South Point Lady Pointer basketball was in attendance.

The game started out with a 5-0 Coal Grove run. Defense was key for the first quarter as it ended with an 11-7 Coal Grove lead. To start the second quarter, South Point started to cut into the Lady Hornet lead. By the midway point of the quarter, South Point tied the game up and went on to take the first lead of the game at 13-11. The first half ended with a 19-16 South Point lead with Jalynn Bradburn putting up nine points in the half.

The Lady Pointers came out strong to begin the second half as they pushed their lead to double digits. The third quarter ended with a 35-26 South Point lead. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Pointers continued to extend their lead. With four minutes remaining in the game, South Point was up by thirteen points. However, Coal Grove began to go on a run and started to cut into the Lady Pointer lead. With two minutes remaining, the South Point lead was cut all the way down to four points! With missed free throws for Coal Grove and good ball control from South Point, the Lady Pointers hung on to take the win and the OVC conference championship! This was the 100th career win for head coach Dave Adams!

Tinesha Taylor was South Point’s leading scorer with 13 points. Jalynn Bradburn was second on Lady Pointer scoring with 11 points while T’Ann Mayo scored 8 points. The Lady Pointers ended the season with a 14-6 overall record and a 9-1 record in the OVC. The Lady Pointers JV team ended their season strong by winning 21-15.

The final home game of the 2007-2008 season for South Point basketball will be on Friday, February 1st in “The Showdown” against Fairland. This is one of the most anticipated games in recent years for South Point. Fans are encouraged to get to the game early as a standing-room only crowd is expected. The JV game will tip at 6:00 pm.
