By: T. J. Layne

ASHLAND, KY-The South Point Lady Pointers traveled to nearby Ashland, Kentucky on Monday, December 7th to face the Ashland Kittens in a key non-conference match-up. A win against Ashland would have South Point off to a 3-0 start.

The game started with Ashland getting off to a 4-0 lead. With early points from Tinesha Taylor, the Lady Pointers came back to tie as the game stayed really tight the entire first quarter. The opening quarter ended with a 16-14 Ashland lead.

The second quarter started out much the same with the score staying close. The Ashland lead stayed around 2-4 points until the halfway mark of the quarter when a series of turnovers from the Lady Pointers allowed the Kittens to stretch out a 29-21 lead, it’s largest of the game. South Point fought tough though and cut the Ashland lead to 29-25 to end the half.

Led by Jalynn Bradburn and Kayla Fletcher, the Lady Pointers came out strong in the second half and regained the lead at the halfway point of the third quarter. The lead would only last about 30 seconds, as Ashland came back to take a one point lead. The game once again stayed close for the remainder of the quarter with both teams tied at 44 heading into the fourth quarter!

In the fourth quarter, South Point came out strong once again and opened the quarter with a 5-0 run. Ashland came back to the cut the South Point lead to two points, but the Lady Pointers went on another 5-0 run to gain a seven point lead. South Point took care of the ball and made their free throws down the stretch to come out with a 64-54 win over the Kittens!

The Jalynn Bradburn-Kayla Fletcher duo that has taken South Point by storm the past two years once again topped Lady Pointers scoring with 24 points for Bradburn and 20 points for Fletcher. Both players put up big numbers in the second half to help the Lady Pointers outscore Ashland 39-25 in the second half. Tinesha Taylor was also double digits in scoring with 12 points.

The Lady Pointers will next be in action on Thursday, December 10th as they open up OVC conference play in a home game at Pointer Gym against the Fairland Lady Dragons.
