BEST SVC Team

Post by george »

Historians here have talked about this being one of the best SVC seasons.

Which school had the best team ever?

One of the Westfall teams from 2003 - 2005 ... one of the many Adena teams (although the 1975-1976 style was not the same as played today) ... one of the three teams this year?

Did not mean to big time or ignore this thread,
I merely wanted to wait and see how this years
SVC teams tournament runs went before committing.
I honestly thought the SVC had a legitimate shot at two State Titles in 2014.
I'm not going to "if",
for it is what it is,
all teams face adversity it's not a singular obstacle for only one club to deal with.
I can honestly say I hope Athens "rolls" the rest of the D2 tournament field in 3 sets,
that would give some credence to my previous claim.

Like I have stated before the X is not an SVC historian but merely a fan of SVC history.
So keep that in mind as I traverse through the years and generations of SVC play.

You make a good point about the 70's teams of Adena.
But that athletic group, Noble, Harper, Atchison could have/would have
transitioned nicely to today's fast style of play.
They went to state in basketball as well.
I would have The U's teams of the late 70's and late 80's in that group as well.
I think all are worthy of mentioning as SVC greats.

The Modern Westfall and Adena clubs are worthy as well.
One can not argue their record and accomplishments.

To seal the deal as the all time greatest SVC team
I think you need to accomplish two things:
Win the SVC title in the given year
And
Win the State.
And to my knowledge only 2 SVC team have done both:
1976 & 1977 Adena warriors coached by Marvin Seyfang
Cindy Noble lead the way for the Warriors.
On her way to a basketball career at Tennessee and then Olympic gold.

As for this years big three:
I think they deserve a mention with the other great SVC teams,
they carried the SVC torch very well.
The standard was met and I believe raised notch,
but sadly we won't have the league champion/state title.
Which would have opened the door not only for the best SVC team ever title
but possibly the claim to the BEST THREE SVC teams ever.
I do believe the SVC will have a state title this year
And to those that disagree
The X sticks his tongue out in your general direction.

This is just my opinion,
I would sincerely like to hear Boo's appraisal of the SVC through the years.

X

1993 Adena volleyball was one of the better teams I can remember seeing, other than the two state champ teams. Members included All Ohioan Emily Hammond, along with Leah Zonner, Chrissy Storts, Natalie Ragland, Keva Putnam, Tamara Conley, Chrissy Higgonbotham, Kelley Doyle and Kari Ross. Team lost to only D-1 Chillicothe 2-1 in a thriller at CHS that was 15-13 in the third set. Ranked number 1 in the state most of the year, and lost to Pemberville Eastwood in the state title. A match, Adena should have won, but just couldn't get over the hump that day. Led 12-9 in set one, before losing 15-12, then had a 9-4 lead in set 2, and lost 15-9. Most of the Warriors problem that day, was themselves. A season high 26 hitting errors.

Nice work
DadPaul08
That was a very good team.

Would like to hear opinions on other great SVC teams throughout the years.
If you have one chip in
for I'm sure there is more then DadPaul08 and the X reading this forum.

The Westfall 2004 squad (FR year of Cassie Sowers) was a really nice team. I think they were the only team in about a 20-25 year span not named Adena to win an outright title. Multiple college volleyball players on that team. I was trying to remember tournament success. I know WF went to the state three straight seasons. Does anyone remember how that team finished?

If you could create a dream team of players from your school who would be on it.

2 OH
2 MH
2 S or 1 S/1Opp
1 L
1 DS

George, i like the post and will reply with some debate i am sure but i can't remember all kids so help would be good. I will start with Unioto even though they are not my school ( Chillicothe see post later/ will be good ) and will give you more than you asked for. My Unioto dream team would have to run a 6-2 offense and i will give you a bench to sub from too! My setters would be Mckenna Steinbrook and Jodi Finchum. Middle hitters would be Miranda Garress and Kaitlyn Jinks with Natalie Miller as a sub. Outside hitters are Alexis Overly, Nici Workman ( played middle at the U but outside at Capital ) Lauren White and Karee Neff playing whoever is the hot or on hitter by set. Jaquie Whittle comes in and plays libero and she serves for one hitter as she had a dynamic jump floater that was difficult to pass. Left on the bench but outstanding players that were not part of the modern game that is faster and demands more athletic players but these 3 could hang if they were playing in the 2000 - up years were Natalie Hill, Lori McClellan, and Bethany Dix ( Dix did play setter in 2000 time frame and was very good ) and i am sure i left out a couple but i think these are the best from the " U " from about 1987 on.

Let me also mention Jessica Lewis, Dannelle Speakman, Angie Niver, April Stamper, Hallie White, were all right there in the mix for making the all-U team for me.

George, you did say from your school so i will entertain you with some Cavalier history as Chillicothe has quite a great volleyball tradition with many of these players playing at the next level back in the day. once again i will run a 6-2 offense so i can get two setters on the team. Setters would be Missy Althoff and Hayley Robinson. Outside hitters include Karis Day, Amy Bambeneck, Maddie Glendening, and Susan Stewart. I chose to go with 4 middle hitters as these girls dominated the net in their respective careers. Jennifer Cave, Hannah Day, Alyssa Oates, and Katelyn Martin. My libero is easy as Parisa Bennett was the best around in 2011 and 2012. Hayley Pittenger would also be in as a defensive specialist who could serve you off the court. Also in consideration and must be mentioned are Jennifer Bambeneck, Kali Kight, Kim Congrove, Molly Ault, Ashley Jones, Carla Tisdale, Julie Coleman, Gina Turner and i am sure i missed some.

Nice team Boo, thanks for sharing the lady Cavs
Sadly your rural contemporaries don't get to see the Cavs
As much as we should.
I still like the idea of adding the Lady Cavs to the SVC in all sports.
Only if The X was King......
Anywho
You do look better in Purple and Gold than Blue and White.

On to my all time Lady Sherman's list
"Only slightly smaller than the Soccer All District List"

Well my first selections would be this years Sherman squad.
They accomplished more than realized,
Some of what does not have a stat category:
Ann Karr -middle
Karee Neff - around the horn
Hanna Nelson - middle
Alexis Overly - around the horn
Taylor Overly - around the horn
McKenna Stienbrook - setter
Emily Ward - defensive specialist
Kassidey Winegardner - serving specialist
Hanna Hall - Middle sub
Marrisa Palmer - around the horn sub
Maddie Eberst - setter/back row sub
Abby Winegardner - around the horn sub
Ashley Taylor - front row sub

From there here is where I would go:
Middles- Nici Workman, Maranda Garress

Out side hitters - Natalie Miller, Maddie Davis, Debbie Brumfield, Lori McClellan,

Setter- Jamie White, Jody Finchem

Defensive players
Jaquie Whittle, Britney Neff, Natalie Hill

Serving specialist:
Sharon Stonerock

Coach: Cindy Overly

I know that's 12
But too many are on the cutting room floor as it is.

Cathy Hatfield, Teresa Neff, Susie Bowling, Steph Winegardner, Lauren White, Kaitlin Jinks, Micha Moats, Sidney Colman, Jamie Hyden, Kristian Vanicar, Courntey Doughty,
Abby Hartsock, Tammy Penniston, Lauren Stout
And several more.......
