GAHS clinches at least share of SEOAL title

Post by jottings »

It took a little longer than expected, but host Gallipolis Gallia Academy outlasted Portsmouth 2-1 in 12 innings on the Robert H. (Bob) Eastman Field in Centenary Friday evening. The victory earned Gallia Academy at least of a share of the 2014 crown with a 7-1 mark. Overall, GAHS improved to 10-3 on the year.

GAHS will host its annual Wooden B Nat tourney on Saturday. The Blue Devils will battle Belpre at 9:30 in the opening game.A second game will b e played later on Saturday.

Portsmouth dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in league play. GAHS had blanked the Trojans 11-0 in their first meeting at Portsmouth on
April 14.

Friday, however Trojan hurler Brandon Wedebrook had the Blue Devils popping up and grounding out through the first five innings before GAHS tied the score at 1-1.

Gallia's Marcus Moore blanked the Trojans for four innings before PHS took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning.

Blue Devil ace Gus Graham replaced Moore in the 6th inning, and received credit for the win in the 12th rung. Ryan Williams relieved Wedebrook in the 10th inning and was charged with the loss.

Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but neither team was able to score any runs other than the 5th frame.

PHS had a chance in the 12th, but two failed sacrifices cost the Trojans dearly. In the bottom of the 12th, a Blue Devil walk ,sacrifice, error, walk and sacrifice fly prevented the Trojan's upset attempt.

The win gave GAHS at least a share of its fourth straight league championship under Coach Ritchie Corvin, and fifth in seven years. Overall, GAHS has won 14 SEOAL baseball titles since league play began in 1941. Gallipolis has won 323 league games and lost 351 since league play began.

Under Crovin, the Blue Devils have won 36 league games and lost only four the past four years.

Well, the Trojans made them earn the title, as it should be. Congrats on the title and congrats to PHS for still fielding a baseball team

Lol, no way am I tempting the baseball gods with such a bold prediction...been in too many games where one team hits the ball hard right at someone, while the other hits little bloops and grounders where they "ain't, plus adds some good pitching and the team that "should" win doesn't.

Think there is a good chance of a league share, but Warren will have something to say about it and I am not predicting or jinxing anything...let's hope for some decent weather and a dry field.
