Poor Call Cost Portsmouth at Gallia
Poor Call Cost Portsmouth at Gallia
I have been around softball for 30 years and seen something for the first time today. A very well hit ball by a young lady for Gallia. She hit it to the fence the girl from Portsmouth ran into the orange plastic fence trying to catch it. The ball hits in front of the fence and rolls under. I know that for sure, because I was within 20ft down the line on that side. The umpire comes out and ask the player if it was a home run. Yes I said he ask the player what the call was, and then decided to make a call. Has anyone every seen an umpire ask a player what the call was on the field. He then proceeds to call it a home run when it should have been a double. Great hit but not a home run. The final score Gallia 5 Ports 4 go figure. The umpire then apologizes for the bad call after the game. Which at this point doesn't mean a hill of beans now that the call cost a run and and probably the game. Sorry lady Trojans, but you just got HOMERED.

Sounds like both teams made errors and this game could have gone either way. The girls are getting better and by years end should be much better. It sounds like both above posters need to just let it go and cheer for their respective teams. Good luck to both teams the rest of the way.

Even though Gallia didn't play like their usual selves, it seems like the call did cost them the game. If the umpire called it a double, that would have been one less run scored. I wasn't there, so I don't know what happened, but it does sound like the call did cost them the game in my opinion.
...and wow that was was a repetitive post, huh? Spring break I guess...

Not being mean but for someone to tell someone else to stop making excuses for their team. WOW

You are forgetting the uncharacteristic three unearned runs scored by Portsmouth thanks to four GAHS errors.
You are also forgetting that in spite of that call, Portsmouth was up 4-2 through four innings; having garnered only 2 hits in the process.
You also forget that the way GAHS got back in the game was not the HR call, but rather the Portsmouth pitcher walking 7 batters over the final three innings, including a bases loaded walk to bring in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Also uncharacteristic was GAHS having the bases loaded in the sixth with none out and their 2-3-4 hitters coming up and didnt score another run.
But if it makes you feel better to blame officials for one questionable call when you didnt do anything to win a game that was literally placed in your lap, then by all means have at it.
And for the record, neither of those referees calls Gallia County home. They are from Meigs County. So much for the "homer" excuse.
Your girls play with a ton of class and heart, and they dont need anyone making excuses for them. I told their coach before the first game against Portsmouth this year that I thought they improved more as last season went along than any team we played. I see this year as building on that for them.
Here's the line score BTW:
PORTSMOUTH- 1 2 0 1 0 0 0 - 4 3 2
GALLIA ACAD-- 2 0 0 0 2 1 x - 5 4 4
Freshman Heather Ward allowed only three singles while striking out 12 and walking 3 in the win. Drake allowed four hits while striking out 7 and walking 7.

Yes,make "a call" one way or another on your own or ask another ump to help you.You for sure dont ask a player on the field. That is so bush league.I dont have any dog in this fight just commenting on the ump's poor judgement.

gahs4ever,
My above post by no way was meant to be a bad reflection on a very good Gallia team. My point in the post was the umpire did play a role in the outcome of this game. I know mistakes happen and calls are missed, but in this instance it ended up being the deciding factor. An umpire should have never ask the player for the call it makes him look shaky and unprofessional. I should have been more upset that the Gallia coach had as good a view as I did and said nothing. He was standing right there and regardless of what he says he knew it didn't clear that fence. But, I also understand if someone is going to give you a run most don't say anything. I was not so much making excuses for the lady Trojans because your team is better overall then ours at this time. But if you have a game taken from you in that fashion that it's unfortunate. I have a lot of respect for young ladies for both teams on the field and wish your team the best the rest of the year.

Interesting....... Was not at the game..... Just a couple points to think about.... Umpires calls will always determine the outcome of a close game.... I have umpired many games, sometime fans have better angles on plays than umpires..... It is hard to see every play with just 2.... There have been blown calls in World Series games that have 6 umps... You can put any spin on this that you want.... If the ump had ruled a Double then the next batter "might" have singled and scored the run.... Who knows..... It sounds like your team overcame this bad call and took the lead... You come across as an honest fan Big Time and I believe what you said.... BUT....... If your team was batting and was awarded a HR, what would you have done??? If you were at a basketball game and an official made a bad call in the first minute of the game that resulted in your opponent getting 2 points... & you lost by one....would you blame the loss on the officials???? It's the easy way out to blame the officials....... I have been guilty of this to so don't think I am getting on your case.... Maybe if your team had committed one lees error or had one more hit, you would have won........ Let it go.... If that is the worst call that goes aganist you this season, I would say you had a very good year............ LOL
