2012--GAHS netters win one, drop two matches

Coach Alex Penrod’s Blue Devil tennis team has opened its 2012 season with one win and two losses.

In their opener on March 28 at Athens, the Bulldogs won, 4-1. In first singles, Kelle Craft lost to Showater, 6-1, 6-0. In second singles action, Connon Christian lost 6-0, 6-0 to Scanion.

Third singles action found Varun Shama losing 6-1, 6-1 to Lambert.

In first doubles, Craft-Lester lost to Burt-Darie and Loudal, 6-2, 6-2 and in second doubles, GAHS’ Riley Nibert-Sean Saltzaber captured Gallia’s lone win over Chan-Zhu, 6-2-6-2.

In their second match on March 26, GAHS blanked Jackson 5-0 on the new courts in Centenary.

Gallia’s Craft defeated Dearth 6-2, 6-1 in first singles action. Lester downed Jackson’s Wood, 6-4, 6-0 for the second singles win. In third singles play, Gallia’s Alex Jaguars defeated Cyan, 6-0, 6-2.

In first doubles play, Gallia’s Nibert-Saltzgaber downed Kinby-Osbourne, 6-4, 6-4 and in second doubles play, Christian-Sharma downed Hale-McNelly, 6-4, 6-4.

At Portsmouth on April 2, the Trojans edged GAHS, 3-2.

Violette defeated Jared Lester 6-0,6-0 in first singles play. Portsmouth’s Shugert Robbie downed Stewart 6-3, 6-2 in second singles action. Gallia’s Christian downed Hicks 6-2, 6-4 in third singles play.

Gallia’s Nibert-Saltzgaber whipped Otney-Sugert. 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Portsmouth’s Keaton-Meriwether downed Shastion-Sharma, 4-6, 6-2,6-2 to win the match.

Gallipolis played four seniors, three juniors and four freshmen in the opening contests. Two 2011 letter winners, junior T. J. McCalla and senior Bryce Amos, both outstanding players, are lost to this year’s team because of injuries in football and basketball.

Gallipolis’ next match was Wednesday at Logan. Next match is at home against Ironton at 12 noon.
