Chesapeake has quite a bit coming back...second best stable of backs outside of Ironton with Wilcoxen, Fletcher, and company. I believe several linemen return as well. Fairland came on strong at the end of the year and basically returns everybody...Fisher and Cunningham will be tough again next season. I think your top 2 and bottom 2 are dead on.

I said middle of the pack could be anyone.

With everything going on in the league with coaches I can't see why Ironton wouldn't walk away with the OVC again this year.

Now that Portsmouth has dropped Wheelersburg from the schedule, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Trojans go no worse than 8-2 and land a playoff berth. The OVC title could come down to the last game of the season when PHS visits Tank Stadium to battle Ironton.

I rarely show optimism for the football program, given the 30-60 record the past 9 years (with no playoffs), but going 6-4 last season, with some impact transfers at the skill positions coming in, and with some quality players already in house, I think the Trojans just might have the best offense in the OVC. Giving up just 1 TD less this year on defense (25 PPG as opposed to 32 PPG last season) will almost guarantee no worse than an 8-2 record. Of course avoiding key injuries is always a concern when predicting a team's record.

GO TROJANS!!!

I read in the paper that there would not be any coaches passes for the preview. That is sad, I can't believe we cannot support these coaches that put in way more hours than they get paid. Stand up OVC supports and request that this small think needs to be changed.

What? Coaches have to pay to get in? Do you mean coaches of other sports?

No I mean football coaches from other schools outside the OVC. I have never went to any other school where coaches were not allowed to get in free if they had the proper pass.

PHS and the numbers 8-2 do not go together. IMO. The Trojans will do well to make 500, this would be a successful season for this program. It would be awesome for PHS to go 8-2! Kickoff in couple weeks, let the games begin.

Went to the OVC previews. I thought Chesapeake looked the best. I would say it will be a three horse race. Peake, Portsmouth and Ironton.

It will come down to the last game of the season for the OVC. It will be either Ironton or Portsmouth you can have the rest. Do have one question was that South Points whole team at the OVC preview? I counted like 23 players.

South point had to go door knocking to get enough to field a team,so yes that was the whole team

I think way to early to tell. At preview last night i would agree how teams rank out. But some of those teams will improve way more then others. Fairland i think will improve a ton. Coal grove will improve quite a bit. Think Gallia Academy will improve a ton. Will that improvement be enough to move them up over initial thoughts we will see. Looking forward for blue devils jamboree game at unioto. it was hard to get a idea where they are at against south point.

wipala: I am forecasting 8-2 or 9-1 based on (1) dropping Wheelersburg, (2) with the incoming transfers at QB/S (Isaac Kelly), WR/DB (Deonta Parker) who in the OVC preview have already shown to be impact players, (3) being 6-4 last year with most of the roster (especially the O-line) back for this season, (4) a more physically imposing Talyn Parker at TB, (5) depth should be better due to better participation numbers. (6) new D-Coordinator Josh Matiz

There's 6 reasons why 8-2 or even 9-1 is not an outlandish prediction. Remember that last year the Trojans would have been much closer to the playoffs if Gallia Academy had not gone 1-9 and South Point 0-10. Secondary points were hard to come by for PHS in 2016.

Why do you think the Trojans will actually do worse this year than last? Remember that PHS went 6-4 with a porous defense (32 PPG). Just giving up a TD less, which is very reasonable (25 PPG as opposed to 32 PPG), will almost guarantee an 8-2 or 9-1 season with the first playoff berth since 2007.

GO TROJANS!!!

I agree with Dave, no way this team does worse, then last year with the changes pointed out above , I honestly think it is possible to win the ovc,it should come down to them and ironton and could be decided in the final game of the season ,finally putting some meaning into the big rivalry game again,we might actually finally see a packed house for this game again

I do indeed hope the Trojans have 8-2, 9-1 shoot even 10-0. I am basing my
opinion on PHS football history the last decade. I, unfortunately do not live
in Portsmouth and have only folks such as yourself to guide me and others such
as I thru SEO sports.
As TrojanDave said if PHS can improve by one touchdown on defense they will
win games list in past. I agree, however not knowing the mindset of the coaches
on defense my question would be, have the players bought into his game plan
for defense, if so a much improved product will be on the field.
PHS has had skilled players in past, I hope these players are willing to get their
jerseys dirty and get after it.
Having said this all I can say I'd, Go Trojans!

SP had a couple kids not there due to a summer flu. Many of the boys were playing sick. Two kids weren't dressed due to injuries. Center quit just days before so that threw a whole new scenario for offense and defense. Not making excuses but they were much better at the first scrimmage. Still probably finish next to last or last this year. I will say this though they will be more disciplined and and in better shape. But low numbers are going to kill them.
