Westfall steals one on the road with a 3 set win over Adena. Adena playing short with 2 injured starters on the bench looked a little out of synced tonight. Westfall blocked like the best blocking team in the SVC but did a way better job of covering behind the block unlike their match with Unioto.

So with a three way tie currently in the SVC, Westfall went from spoiler to a possible favorite to repeat with home games remaining vs. the U and the Warriors.

The week of September 29th will be "The Week of Reckoning" for Unioto as they play at home that Tuesday vs Adena and then travel to Williamsport to take on the Mustangs on Thursday. I think the picture of who wins the SVC becomes a little clearer when that week concludes. Until then the Big Three will be on cruise control....

Yes it was.

My idea of 5 minute breaks between sets in extended matches is gaining steam,
I have only heard one discerning voice on the X's proposed rule change.
If not for the players than for the sake of
enlarged prostates and play by play announcers everywhere
This rule change needs to happen.

As Warningtrackpower pointed out the X was right on target with my prediction as to what the deciding factor in round 3 of the big 3 would be.
Now granted the Mustangs Thunderdome is a huge home court advantage,
but the biggest advantage for the eventual SVC champion
may just be who is able to stay the healthiest down the back stretch of SVC play.

Here is the remaining schedule I have for my beloved lady Tanks,
Who are currently ranked in the top 10 of both the
Coaches Poll and Max Preps poll for D2 in the great state of Ohio.
Also might I add in 1st place of the very tough SVC at mid season point.

September 18 home Piketon

September 23 @ ZT
September 25 home Huntington

September 27 home Tri match
I think this is with court house and the burg

September 30 @ Westfall
October 2 home Adena

October 7 @ PV
October 9 Home vs SE and Senior night for the very special Frenchtown class of 2015

The SVC standing at the Turn:
Unioto 6-1
Adena 6-1
Westfall 6-1
Huntington 4-3
Southeastern 3-4
Zane Trace 2-5
Piketon 1-6
Paint Valley 0-7

The SVC out of conference record:
27-12

Unioto, Westfall, and Adena
Have all been recognized as top teams in the States Coaches poll.

The BIG 3:
Of the League leaders the schedule favors the reigning Champs Westfall the greatest,
both Unioto and Adena must Travel North to Williamsport in round two of play.

Unioto has both Westfall and Adena in the same week, which could play in the Tanks favor if the class of 2015 can get that elusive Thunderdome win. Playing the two high octane teams of the conference back to back should keep the Lady Tanks Edge sharp and give 'em a good taste of the competition they will face in the D2 Tournament.

Adena has the longest row to hoe to the SVC title.
The Warriors must travel to both Westfall and Unioto.
But more daunting for Adena is the injury bug that has bitten
The Warriors in the past week.

In The Middle:
Huntington has separated themselves from the lower half of the league.
At times has went toe to toe with the league leaders.

Two Teams Looking to Move Up:
Southeastern took Westfall to four the first time around
and looks greatly improved from the summer.
Would probably be right in the thick of the title chase
in any other southern Ohio Volleyball Conference.

Zane Trace is starting to jell and could/will
jump up and bite anybody that overlooks them.
This will be the team that changes the most
In the second round of play.

Growing Pains:
Piketon
&
Paint Valley
Both lost a lot of Senior talent from last season.
Which is always hard to overcome, but especially
Hard this season in the SVC when you consider
Unioto, Westfall and Adena average around 7 Seniors
On their league leading rosters.
Both P.H.S and P.V. have some nice younger talent developing
That could greatly improve their standings
In the next few years of SVC action.

On the tournament horizon:
Let's play a little over/under
The X says the SVC will have 5 Sectional Champions this season
What says YOU?
Over 5 or Under 5?

X

Wanting to see the Adena/Westfall showdown, I made my way to Frankfort Tuesday evening. Starting with the introductions, I quickly realized there would be no "showdown". Missing the best overall player they have as well as a big body in the middle, Adena really had no chance against the thunderous duo of Curry and Phillips. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Westfall wouldn't have won with both teams at even strength, but lord have mercy was this a complete overmatch! Replacing two "spots" with what seemed to be 6 girls, Adena seemed out of rhythm all night long. To their credit, even when things seemed really bad for them, they would only be down 3-4 points (at least in the first two). By the third set, reality had set in for the Lady Warriors and they proceeded to take a whippin like they hadn't seen in a while.

Don't cry for Adena though as the second half as well as (most importantly) the tournament road should be much like last year. Same for Westfall as the only question is whether these two would ever be forced to meet before the regionals. Whatever the case, I wish both teams HEALTH as they are two wonderfully talented teams.

A few more observations from the game:

1) Hannah Phillips has the sickest serve in the league (quasi spike-like).
2) Amanda Curry can and will get kills from anywhere on the court, including from the service line (not while serving).
3) Carly Carroll may be the most underrated "serve receiver" in the league.
4) May be the quietest big game I have ever seen from Coach Smith. Almost seemed like she knew they had no chance

That being said, it is on to round two. I look for THE U to win out, Westfall to finish one behind and Adena to finish two off the pace. Good luck to all teams!

Sounds like you were having an 70's/80's flashback when you picked those songs (the volleyball theme was on point however). Did you have to go through some of the "mix tapes" (cassette) that you made for your wife to come up for those titles? Or did they come from your 8-track collection? Or was it vinyl? I'm just amazed you were able to type that without your mullet getting in the way.

You need to get into this century and flow with some EDM (electronic dance music)....that would be channel 51 on your SiriusXM dial.

Always,

X, don't let Von Lavin get you worked up, he still questions my ability to text! I had Mrs. Boo's truck one day this week ( 2003 explorer ) and it still has a tape player so i pulled out one of my mastermix tapes from 1986 and grooved all day with the likes of the Police, Psyc Furs, Haircut 100, Brian Ferry, etc. Took me back to a time when i had hair, my steps were quick and light, my eyes were clear and bright, like a rock......back to vb my Cavs took another one at Hillsboro to move to 7-1 in SCOL and are gaining momentum towards a showdown with WCH in Chilli. Much improved Cavalier team than what you saw in mid August. Thats what they are supposed to do, get better! Go Cavs!

Fun show this week...thanks to Trevor Thomas, John Evans, and Jeff Reuter for calling in with thoughts on the SVC. Also, any show with a special mention of the "X" is a great show (thanks for music ideas) - here is the link

Very good show,
Even the East German Olympic judge would give it a 10
Really liked the different points of view on SVC expansion
from the school officials and from you guys as well.

As for finding out the league records of softball, cross country, golf and ect...
How about we all just look at the banners hanging in the gyms at the SVC schools
And report back to the Svcsportszone.com
what years are noted on the banners as SVC title years.
I think every school has them up
and if we could get 1 person from each school
to report back we could have this great mystery solved
in one week and rather efficiently might I add.
Probably not the most official way of finding out
but it would give you a pretty good idea
of who won what championships in which years.

As for the bumper music...
That's 2 for the X
ZERO for Von Techno Hagen
I strongly suggest listening to this entire podcast
But it gets really good around the 34:45 mark.
Von Hagen you should listen to that part 10 to 28 times
It might help you with your Tin Ear
As the great contemporary poet,
Marshall Mathers pens in
"With Out Me"
You don't know me,
you're too old let go its over,
nobody listens to techno

.

I will acknowledge Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams
as a talented assemble, though I'm not quite ready
To elevate them to Prince and the Revolution status just yet.
I do like that "Happy" song,
The X knows the dance,
it's on par with "Raspberry Beret"
But Pharrell needs a "Purple Rain" type score
before being compared to Prince.

Scores from tonight's SVC action:

The U over ZT in 3:
13-11-23

Adena over PV in 3:
8-4-7

HHS over Piketon in 3:
13-21-6

Westfall over Southeastern in 4:
23-25 / 25-19 / 25-5 / 25-7

There was a whole bait of em, and my eyes ain't what they use to be.
Maybe a follow up fact check could be in order but this should make for
A nice start in the process.

I don't think they have the Internet in Williamsport so I will check on the Mustangs Banners Tuesday, just doing my part to make the Sportzone the porthole of SVC knowledge.

Come on SVC fans do your part, chip in and report the same information from your respective schools Banners!

The week that was in the SVC in a word...YAWN At least for the Big 3. The SE vs ZT was a five set banger!

Next week however..... will be the biggest week of vball for the Union Scioto Varsity volleyball team. If they win both matches (@ Westfall, home vs.Adena) which will be no small task, they will win the league outright and the throne shall be theirs!! I don't see them losing the following week and Senior night will be their crowning glory. It will truly be a Purple Reign. (multiple Game of Throne and a sold out Prince references alert)

That being said if they split next weeks games - the Adena vs Westfall match in the last week of league play will be HUGE! It will decide an outright league champ or a (Big) 3 way tie for first place.

It's going to be a great week of volleyball! Can't wait!

Ron as I look over this glorious vista we call The Scioto Valley
and this slice of Mecca that god has blessed
and home of the magical floor we play ball on,
Frenchtowne's Meat Locker.
Ron I'm reminded of words that were spoken long ago
but words as pointed for our time as they were then.

"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished,
but by what you should have accomplished"

Do you know who spoke these words of wisdom?
The legendary coach
John Wooden.

Yes the time has come to set aside our
petty difference in musical taste
the hyperbole,
and tomfoolery

Ron it's time to get down to Brass Tacks.
It's time for a Champion to stake their claim
To the 2014 SVC volleyball throne.
And the coming week as you so eloquently put it
Will be the week that sets the course for eventual SVC Champion.

Will the reigning champs continue their stamped to
A repeat title?

Will the new age lady warriors rekindle the great spirit
Of Lady Warriors from seasons ago?

Can the highly talented Sherman's realize their
Lofty destiny that was bestowed upon them
Many a moon ago?

Ron, my friend
This week
Might just be the biggest week ever
In the history of SVC
Volleyball league play.

Let the games begin!

SVCsportszone.com banner report from the Thunder Dome:

Volleyball

Boys Track
85,95,96 00

Baseball has 11 titles but from my angle I couldn't make out the numbers
The X is not as good as I once was.
Warningtrack if you use any of these numbers for Keno or the Mega Millions lottery
The X expects back 10to28% of the winnings..........

On to the match:
Wow!
A five set thriller.
I just don't know what to say to do these two squads justice for the performance they both put on last night.
Big plays on both sides of the net by both squads.
Some huge individual performances by several players but the one that sticks out in my mind and set the tone for the first two sets was Anna Karr's solo block in the first set. It gave the Sherman's the momentum swing and it took the Mustangs till the 3rd set to get momentum back.
Also the Sherman's Serving was nearly perfect on the night maybe 1 or 2 miss overall.

Two State records was tied in this colossal match-up:
McKenna Steinbrook tied the States record for assist in a match, 72.
And The Lady Sherman's as a Team tied the State Record for Kills in match, 80.

Best of luck to Westfall from here on out,
they are a very good team and will go far in the tournament.
