UCLA basketball team returns to L.A., with three arrested players still in China

Post by Omega »

From the LA Times:

The UCLA basketball team returned from Shanghai after its season-opening victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday without the three players ensnared in a legal imbroglio over the alleged theft of designer sunglasses.

Freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley remained in a hotel in Hangzhou, China, along with a contingent of UCLA and Pac-12 Conference officials, according to a person close to the situation not authorized to comment publicly because of the sensitive nature of the information.

LaVar Ball, LiAngelo’s father, and other family members also stayed behind, according to ESPN, for the Tuesday opening of a Big Baller Brand pop-up shop in Hong Kong.

ESPN reported that a person with firsthand knowledge of the investigation said that there was surveillance video of the players shoplifting from three stores inside an upscale shopping center next to the hotel where the team was staying in Hangzhou.

The players are expected to remain in the hotel until their legal situation is resolved.

UCLA coach Steve Alford declined to address the situation after his team’s 63-60 triumph over Georgia Tech at the Baoshan Sports Center in Shanghai and a school representative declined to comment.

Hope they get thrown in jail over there, but my gut feeling is this country will sweet talk the Chinese into letting them come back unscathed.

What will happen is they'll stay over there until the investigation is finished, and the three players will receive probation.

Word is they get home confinement at the hotel for 3 weeks and never come back into China. With some of the business deals and this is not a very big deal where the costs of jail time will be a lot more than the crime. I would add community service in the Chinatown area of LA. .

Not that it matters but I think China is considered second world raider. I heard somewhere where the penalty over there for shoplifting is 3 to 9 years for ordinary people, but these are not ordinary people, that's why daddy bigmouth didn't seemed too concerned.

The big question is will the Brand be effected as they open stores in China. As well as if the people there watch the so called tv show he filmed there.

Should have left them there and let Ball get them out of trouble. Bc Ball is the man! He the smartest and most influential man in the world...... What a joke... I do think that should be kicked out of UCLA. If it was one of us or our kids they'd still be there and sentenced to whatever the Chinese punishment is for stealing.

Make it a learning experience for these 3 players. 10 games out. 50 hours community service in Chinatown part of LA. Helping out in that area. Learning more of their culture that the 3 players stole from. Without cameras to document what they are doing unless needed to show what they are not doing.
