You're right. I just found a newspaper article that says Brisker scored his 1,000th point his senior year.

Thought I read a while back "Buzz" Fisher talking about Johnny Harrison being another 1,000 pt scorer.

1. Todd Staker-6’3” 1981-1984-started as a Sophomore-guard who could jump out of the gym. Played on two Final Four teams, 82 as a Sophomore and 84 as Senior. Burg made it to the finals in 84 losing to future NBA player Jerome Lane and Akron St. Vincent 75-71. Todd averaged around 30 in the tourney that year.

2. Andrew Burleson-6’6”, 1998-2002- started as a Freshman-could play about anywhere. Sweet shot and good hops. Could handle the ball very well for being 6’6”. I believe he is the all time leading scorer at Burg.

3. Brad Walke-6’1”, 1980-1983-started as a Sophomore. Guard who could shoot from anywhere or take you off the dribble. If three point shot would have be around he would have scored some serious points. Played on the Burg Final Four team of 81-82.

4. Jonathon Eaton-6’1”-1991-1995-started as a Freshman come tourney time helping lead A Burg team, that I believe had a losing record going to the tourney, all the way to the Regional Final. Playmaker who was good at driving to the basket and dishing off or making the shot. Helped lead Burg to the Final Four in 95 where they lost to a strong Orrville team in the state finals. Upset a strong Cols Bishop Hartley team in the semifinals.

5. Cam Miller-6’7”-2004-2007-started as a Sophomore. Good balhandler for his size. Could shoot the three or beat you off the dribble for a thunderous dunk. Helped lead Burg to back to back Final Fours in 2006 and 2007.
I would put Mark Eaton on this list he started some games as a freshman very good player terrific scorer high basketball I.Q
Also would add Jack Miller I think his senior year was 78-79 not sure but was really good went on to play 4 years at the university of Hawaii
What about Scott and Brian Grey? (Brian went to Green Sr.year) Craig Brown,Joe DeCamp,Paul Newman and Bob Shaw? Maybe not top five but close.

Surprised none of the Athens folks have mentioned Mike Wren.

Was one of the best players on their District championship teams and is a Hall of Famer at Miami U. Maybe the Bobcats still hold a grudge on Mike for being a Redskin? (Lol)

Don't forget Scott Gray, (Dayton) Brian Bays (Miami) and Jeff Meadows (Kent State) from the 70's, all played D1 college basketball.
Gray as a senior, averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds a game. And some thought he was even better on defense.
They called him the 'Pete Rose of Basketball' in southern Ohio because he was the hardest working and most motivated player seen in the area.

When he went to the highly-respected 'Five Star' basketball camp in Pittsburgh with 300 other blossoming stars, he was voted 'Mr. Hustle.' When he went back the next year and competed with another 300, he again was named 'Mr. Hustle. Heavily-recruited, Gray chose the University of Dayton.
Dayton coaches referred to him as a potential 'major factor' in the team's success the next four years, but a foot injury slowed down his career.

Scott Gray was one of the great ones that's for sure. I picked my 5 based on all of these players played a big part in getting Burg to a Final Four or the state final game. All of them but Burleson, I added him because he is the all time leading scorer at Burg. All of the other players quoted throughout my post on here were all great players at Burg.

Burg and Portsmouth would be about the same. Hard to just mention 5 as both have had some superstars over the years. That rival in the 70's and 80's was by far the best of its time back then.

trojandave wrote: Thu Feb 08, 2018 6:41 pm With the incredibly rich history of the Portsmouth Trojans, to narrow the list to only 5 is extremely difficult. I will go, though, with this 5:

1. Larry Hisle (1965).......3rd leading scorer in Trojan history(1,375), first team All-American, played pro baseball for Philadelphia and Milwaukee
2. Jeff Lisath (1978)*.......5th leading scorer in Trojan history(1,256) all time leading scorer in PHS state tournament history (40 points in 2 games), starter on the 1978 PHS state championship team, started at Miami University (Oxford)
3. Craig Tubbs (1979)*......2nd leading scorer in Trojan history(1,485), second leading scorer in PHS state tournament history (39 points in 2 games), starter on the 1978 PHS state championship team, started at Miami University (Oxford)
4. Mike Haley (1961)*.......leading scorer on the 1961 Big School State Champion Trojans(22.0), starred at Ohio University and is a member of their Hall of Fame, coached at Dayton Roth and Dunbar, winning 4 state titles, also coached at Portsmouth 1993-1995
5. Kyre Allison (2016)......all time leading scorer at PHS (1,688 points), started all 4 years, went on to play his freshman year at Marshall University

Others that I have to mention.......Leroy Carr (1954), Curt Gentry (1955), Walt Mannon (1967), Charles Taylor (1969), Mike Lovenguth (1972), Bo Clemens (1974), Marcus Bendolph (1980)*, Chris Gentry (1982), Kyle Taylor and Darrin Miller (1984), David Barnes, Dominic McKinley, Patrick Tubbs (1988)*, Jason Taylor (1989)*, Phil Whitehead (1991)*, Damond Mannon (1992)*, Darnell Lisath (1994), Andrew Bendolph (2011)*, Wayne Evans, Dion McKinley (2012)*, Kendal Reynolds (2017--4th leading scorer in Trojan history--1,341).

13 of these players mentioned played on at least 1 state tournament team. They are designated with an asterisk*.
Can’t argue with that. I do believe that Pat Tubbs and Dominic McKinley could have been big time scorers had they not played on such deeply talented teams (Mannon also)

Great list! Will note that I believe E. Legg was 2nd team (All-OH) & K. Miller was 2nd team (All-OH) as well. Perdue will be a great addition to this list when it's all said & done.

Legg was 3rd team. Miller was 2nd. Both great players. Piketon's had a really nice basketball history.

All 4 of Vinton County's 1000pt scorers are on this list with the 5th possibly coming tonight (Naylan Yates)
I would try to find space for Jason Caudill on here somewhere. Didn't play his senior year due to injury but was a monster in the paint.

We played him in 8th grade and he went for 35 and we were a good team. Couldn’t stop him.

Eric Caudill was incredible. I refuse to believe to this day he couldn’t play and do well at D1. We faced him in jr high at Eastern Pike. He was impossible to guard. I was student teaching at Eastern Pike when Doug Williams was there before he transferred. So smooth and talented with great size.

Eric Caudill was the best basketball player to probably ever wear a Piketon uniform.

Blessed to coach seven players mentioned. Evan Legg was 3rd Team All-Ohio and Kyle Miller was 2nd Team All-Ohio. I believe 12 on the list scored 1000 points or more.

Randy Smith (late 70's) should be on the Minford list. Also, Jimmy "Jet" Gilbert.
